KNOPPIX-NSM is dedicated to providing a framework for individuals wanting to learn about Network Security Monitoring.
We have tryed to do most of the hard work to help get the beginner/newbie up and running fast so they spend more time learning about NSM, leaving the details as a later exercise once familiar with the concepts.
KNOPPIX-NSM is based on the ever popular Knoppix, which means that you can test all the tools in a live session running on the cd without installing to harddrive. KNOPPIX-NSM has the added bonus of be able to install to harddisk so you can deploy a NSM framework into your production network and use it for realtime monitoring.

Rapid sensor deployment
You can boot you sensors from the live CD, store all data to a local HD partion and have them logging back to a central server.

With KNOPPIX-NSM you can deploy a complete NSM network to monitor your existing network infrastructure. KNOPPIX-NSM comes pre-configured for deployment of multiple sensors and databases, all you need to do is create the sensor accounts in the database and change some passwords.
Secure
KNOPPIX-NSM has been built with security in mind. All remote communications are over ssl tunnels so that you do not have to be concerned about eaves droppers if you decide to run KNOPPIX-NSM in your main network channels. Another feature is the use of iptables to ensure that only allowed hosts can connect and only necessary services are visible to the network.
Easy console deployment
Need another console, just boot from the cd (setting the host and ip at boot time) and you are up and running straight away.
The intent of KNOPPIX-NSM is to provide a distrubtion with accompanying documentation on the tools that we have selected and how they are put together in the NSM framework.

Monoppix is a Live CD Linux distribution (based on Knoppix), which means you pop it in your CD drive, reboot, and youre running Linux.
It works without installing a thing on your hard drive - it runs completely off the CD and RAM.

distccKNOPPIX is a directly bootable and self-configuring Linux system on a small (55MB) iso running a distccd daemon. distccKNOPPIX is a simple remastering of Knoppix running a distccd daemon and some general cleaning up/removal of unneeded packages/apps.
Its obvious target is for those who have other machines at their hands, and for some reason or an other can not get a distccd daemon running on it.
Attention Gentoo Users: The distccKNOPPIX (Debian) version of gcc is not patched with pie or protector support like the Gentoo version is. Im working on fixing this, but you will probably have problems compiling glibc, grub and perhaps other programs until this issue is remedied.
All versions are identical except for the default gcc. All downloads have all 4 versions of gcc. You can also change the default gcc at the boot prompt by typing knoppix gcc-3.4 for example. Or you can change the gcc version at the command line with update-alternatives --config gcc. If you are unsure which version to download, try the gcc-3.3 one.

HTTP-FUSE-KNOPPIX is a "pile-up" KNOPPIX linux distribution. HTTP-FUSE KNOPPIX downloads pieces of Root Filesystem from a HTTP server when the piece is requested, although normal KNOPPIX requires whole 700MB ISO image at first. The piece is "piled up" on your PC.

The first minimum parts of HTTP-FUSE-KNOPPIX are bootloader with "Linux kernel" and "miniroot". The size is only 6MB. The rest of parts "ROOT file system" which size is 700MB is downloaded on demand as a small piece of block device.

The original block device which includes ROOT file system is split into small data-piece. Each small data-piece is compressed and saved to a file. The files are called "split-and-compressed block files". Split-and-compressed block files is downloaded when it is required. Split-and-compressed block files compose a virtual block device with HTTP-FUSE.

HTTP-FUSE-KNOPPIX selects ROOT file system at boot time. It means HTTP-FUSE-KNOPPIX doesnt make a CD-ROM for customization. It just upload the customized Root File system on HTTP server.

Furthermore the uploaded "split-and-compressed block files" for customized KNOPPIX are difference only. The most split-and-compressed blocks files are shared between original KNOPPIX and customized KNOPPIX. The feature makes small volume of a server when customized KNOPPIX is added.

ParallelKnoppix is a remastered edition of KNOPPIX that allows setting up a cluster of machines for parallel processing using the LAM-MPI and/or MPICH implementations of MPI.

Getting the cluster up and running takes less than 15 minutes, if the machines have PXE network cards. Starting from version 2.2, the distribution is based on Debians unstable branch, rather than KNOPPIX.
