iceWing 0.9

iceWing 0.9

iceWing is an Integrated Communication Environment Which Is Not Gesten. more>>
iceWing is an Integrated Communication Environment Which Is Not Gesten (this is a reference to an older program, the predecessor of iceWing) is a graphical plugin shell. It is optimized for, but not limited to, image processing and vision system development.

Predefined or self-written plugins operate hierarchically on data provided by other plugins and can also generate new data-streams. An important predefined plugin is the grabbing plugin, which can read images from the disk in various image formats, videos from the disk, from grabber-hardware, e.g. V4L2-devices or FireWire, and also from external, network wide processes.

Besides plugin management, iceWing also supports comfortable rendering of any data in any number of windows. All interactions with the windows, like panning, zooming, introspection, or saving, are handled by iceWing.

Additionally, a comfortable user interface creation is provided, where the complete handling of the interface elements is taken over by iceWing. This includes saving and loading of all widget settings and all window settings and positions at any time.

Looking Glass 1.0

Looking Glass 1.0

Looking Glass is a project that allows creating an innovative 3D desktop environment for Linux. more>>
Looking Glass is a project that allows creating an innovative 3D desktop environment for Linux. It is sponsored by Sun Microsystems.

Looking Glass is programmed in the Java language using the Java 3D system to remain platform independent. Despite the use of graphics acceleration features, the desktop explores the use of 3D windowing capabilities for both existing application programs and ones specifically designed for Looking Glass.

The project is still in early development. The prototype is now working on Suns Java Desktop System.[citation needed]

One of its most notable features is the creation of reversible windows. This capability can be used for features like allowing the user to write notes and comments on the windows backs, or displaying application dialogs without risking them being detached from the application they relate to.

All windows start by looking like a normal 2D or 2.5D window, but can be manipulated as thin slate-like 3D objects which can be set at any angle or turned completely around by the user.

Other features include provision of a panning virtual desktop, icons that reflect the live status of the window they represent and zooming of a window when it receives focus.

Satellite is a very simple theme that displays a composite satellite image for the USA.

It updates hourly. You can zoom each portion of the main image, to see greater detail for a specific area.

There are only two actions. You press a section of the main image, and it zooms in on that section. Press the magnifying glass at the top, and the zoom turns off. Thats it.

Main features:
- works as KIPI plugin
- fast image loading (about as fast as kuickshow)
- fast zooming/panning (faster than kuickshow)

Videotrans 1.6.0

Videotrans 1.6.0

Videotrans is a set of scripts that convert a movie file in any format that mplayer understands to a DVD-compatible VOB file. more>>
Videotrans is a set of scripts that convert a movie file in any format that mplayer understands to a DVD-compatible VOB file, doing all the necessary conversions automatically. Videotrans provides an automatic DVD menu generator.
Videotrans has the following programs available:
movie-to-dvd
The movie-to-dvd program takes one or more input files and converts them into a separate MPEG2 video stream and a separate MP2 or AC3 audio stream.
This program takes care of all the necessary conversions, such as framerate adjustment, audio adjustment, zooming/shrinking for DVD frame sizes, etcetera. The program can determine which conversions are necessary on its own, no user intervention is required (but of course, it is possible).
When making a DVD, youll first convert all the movies that you want to put on the DVD into the MPEG2 video and MP2 or AC3 audio streams. Later, youll combine these with the movie-title program into a complete DVD.
movie-title
The movie-title program takes one or more video files that were converted by the movie-to-dvd program and a special title sequence that was produced by movie-make-title and combines all of these into a menu from which the viewer of the DVD can choose which movie he or she wants to watch.
The menu is created by displaying the title sequence in the background, with animated picture-in-picture versions of all the movies on top of that. The creator has the option of supplying information about the movies. This information can be viewed from the menu as well, on a movie-per-movie basis.
The program also generates an XML file for use with dvdauthor, the program that is used to actually create the DVD image that you will burn onto a DVD disc. The program tells you how to run dvdauthor to do the processing for you.
movie-make-title
The movie-make-title program is used to create a background movie and an audio track for DVD menus.
The movie-make-title program takes a single movie and cuts a specified part of out it. It then converts this piece of the movie into separate frames and saves the audio track in a WAV file for you.
Youll have to manually view all the frames and throw away those that you do not want in the title sequence of your DVD (the first few frames and the last few frames). Its not possible to automatically cut out the piece of the movie that you want exactly. I recommend xv for this purpose, although any image viewer that understands JPEG picture files will do.
Also, youll have to process the WAV audio file by hand, to cut out exactly that audio track that you want to hear when the menu is displayed. The movie-title program will make sure that the audio track lasts exactly as long as the movie part that you cut out does. This is to compensate for possible changes in the video frame rate and to correct small mistakes. I personally find sweep a very useful graphical audio processor for this purpose. Sweep can be downloaded at http://sweep.sourceforge.net/.
movie-rip-tv.com
The movie-rip-tv.com program is a convenience program that I personally use to gather interesting information about TV series. Given the name of a series (such as Star Trek Enterprise), a season number and an episode number, this program will create an information file in the correct format for use with the movie-title program. The movie-title program will then be able to display the episodes name in the menu and provide an information button which leads to the generated information (such as the director, the guest stars list, the description of the particular episode, etcetera).
movie-compare-dvd
The movie-compare-dvd program can be used after burning a DVD image to a DVD disc to verify whether all the data was written onto the disc intact. The program takes the on-filesytem copy and the on-DVD copy and compares the checksums of the files on both to find any differences.
Usage:
If you want to start quickly with these programs, and you have a couple of movies that you want to put onto a DVD, try this (assuming that your TV standard is PAL, otherwise specify ntsc instead of pal everywhere that its used):
movie-to-dvd -m pal movie1.avi movie2.avi movie3.avi
movie-make-title -o title -m pal -s 0 -e 60 -m pal movie1.avi
movie-title -o title.vob -t title movie1.m2v movie2.m2v movie3.m2v
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory -x title.vob-dvdauthor.xml
a_command_to_burn_a_dvd_from dvd_directory
In case you dont want a selection menu, you may also try:
movie-to-dvd -m pal -M movie1.avi movie2.avi movie3.avi
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie1.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie2.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie3.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory -T
a_command_to_burn_a_dvd_from dvd_directory
In this case, youll have to use the DVD players navigation controls to get to the various movies on the DVD.
Enhancements:
- All sorts of clean-up was done.
- Some long-waiting feature requests have been implemented.
- In general, the program should work on more systems now.

Daily Strip Manager 2.10

Daily Strip Manager 2.10

Daily strip manager is a simple PHP script that offers a more powerful user interface for browsing comic strips. more>>
Daily strip manager is a simple PHP script which offers more powerful user interface for browsing comic strips, downloaded by DailyStrips perl script, than static html pages.
Daily Strip Manager offers sorting, zooming to specific strip, duplicate control, keyboard navigation (2.0) and more. Nothing much for a quick PHP script, but it works for me.
DS Manager at this time only works with DailyStrips setup configured to put comic strip images in subdirectories using date as a filename (e.g. options -l --stripdir).
Images may actually end with whatever garbage but they MUST start with their full date in format specified in config.php, otherwise nothing would work at all.
You should also enable indexing and provide directory writable by PHP user to store indexes in, otherwise expect general slowness (probably this wont show much on some fancy-shmancy Xeon, but I use P3 as my web server, thank you very much.
DS Manager should itself (with all related files) be placed at the root of your strips collection, otherwise it wont work at all.
As of version 2.0, Daily Strip Manager uses XmlHttpRequest object, which adds dependencies on JavaScript and modern web-browsers (Mozilla flavours and IE6 seem to work fine, dunno about the rest). If you are somehow unhappy with this, use version 1.7 instead.
Enhancements:
- This release adds minor interface improvements.

Zoom 1.0.4a

Zoom 1.0.4a

Zoom is a player for Z-Code stories or games. more>>
Zoom is a player for Z-Code stories or games. These are usually text adventures (interactive fiction), and were first created by Infocom with the Zork series of games.

Throughout the 80s, Infocom released many interactive fiction stories before their ambitions to enter the database market finally brought them low.

Zoom has versions for OS X and Unix-like operating systems using X-Windows. You can download the OS X version or the source code using the links to the left. Zoom can be redistributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Obviously, Zoom is quite capable of playing Zork, so those of you who have access to the increasingly rare Infocom games can continue to play them. However, back in 1993, Graham Nelson released Curses and more importantly the Inform compiler that created it. There is now a considerable collection of new interactive fiction of variable quality available. Bafs guide to the interactive fiction archive is absolutely essential for those new to the scene.
