KDE Kontact 1.2.5

KDE Kontact 1.2.5

KDE Kontact is a PIM (Personal Information Management) suite. more>>
Kontact Personal Information Management suite unites mature and proven KDE applications (called components in the context) under one roof. Thanks to the powerful KParts technology, all components are seamlessly integrated into one application.
The components of KDE Kontact are all shaped to work nice with each other. This results in features like intuitive drag n dropping between components and appointment handling, task lists and contacts.
KDE Kontact also extends its components with support for various groupware servers. When using these servers your workgroup will have access to features like shared email folders, group task lists, calendar sharing, central addressbooks and meeting scheduling.
In short: KDE Kontact delivers innovations to help you manage your communications more easily, organize your work faster and work together more closely, resulting in more productivity and efficiency in digital collaboration.
Main features:
The Summary Component
- This component is specially made for KDE Kontact. It provides both an overview of the other components and a selection of information gathered from the internet like weather info and headlines. In fact any RDF news feed can be added.
The Mail Component
- The mail component is provided by KMail, the KDE mail client -- a straight forward mail client that comes with all features you would expect.
The Calendar Component
- It is quite obvious that KOrganizer, again very mature KDE application, gets used as the calendar component. This feature-rich program is so easy to use and intuitive that you will quickly adopt it as your personal organizer. Extended with groupware functionality it can boost the communication within every workgroup.
The Contacts Component
- As the name implies: this component manages your valued contacts. The application providing this component is KAddressbook, a program that is deeply rooted into KDE. It was integrated in KMail and KOrganizer even before the KDE Kontact project was started
The Notes Component
- This component serves as your infinite block of digital sticky notes. Your can stick them on your desktop and they say visible even after closing KDE Kontact.
The News Component
- This straight forward, full-featured news reader is provided by KNode, KDEs default news reader.
The Sync Component
- KitchenSync, KDEs universal syncing application provides a framework for syncing with all kinds of devices. On one side it will have a plugin based interface with your mobile devices, like: PDAs and smart phones. On the other side it has conduits for connecting with other KDE Kontact components and external applications. The Sync component, provided by KitchenSync, is currently being implemented, therefore KitchenSync is not yet considered to be stable. Till the day that KitchenSync takes over we have two very nice applications that seamlessly integrate with KDE Kontact: KPilot for syncing with Palm compatible devices and Kandy for syncing with several mobile phone types. Eventually, KitchenSync will become a universal syncing framework.

Konversation 1.0.1

Konversation 1.0.1

Konversation is a user friendly Internet Relay Chat client. more>>
Konversation project is a user friendly Internet Relay Chat client.
Enhancements:
- A bug that caused left-to-right text contained in lines determined to be right-to-left text to appear reversed has been fixed.
- Whether a line is treated as right-to-left vs. left-to-right text is now determined by the amount of each type of character in the line, improving the user experience in chats involving bi-directional text considerably.
- The "Edit Network" dialog has been refined for clarity and ease of use.
- A warning dialog to prevent accidentally quitting Konversation has been added.
- The Auto Replace list can now be sorted.
- The /media script command now sports improved player recognition, enhanced and easier configurability, the ability to distinguish between audio and video media as well as newly added support for kdetv. New /audio and /video command aliases have been added to expose these new abilities.
- The lower boundary of the default DCC port range has been raised from 1025 to 1026 to avoid conflicts with the commonly blocked Windows RPC port 1025.
- Dismissing an OSD notification by clicking on it will now also cancel the systray notification flash.
- A new configuration file option [OSD]OSDCheckDesktopLock has been added, allowing to manually disable the screensaver check in non-KDE environments that do not support it, causing the OSD not to be displayed.
- A bug that could lead to the "Switch to" sub-menu in the context menus of tabs not to be updated properly upon switching tabs has been fixed.
- A bug that caused the irc setBack DCOP call not to function has been fixed.
- A bug that caused ampersands in the names of tabs not to be displayed and an immediately following character to be used as keyboard accelerator has been fixed.
- A bug that caused ignoring nicknames with [ or ] characters in them to fail has been fixed.
- Command aliases containing regular expression syntax can no longer cause built-in commands not to function.
- A bug that caused the Konversation irc:// protocol handler not to function has been fixed. Its compatibility with systems that do not use the GNU bash shell as default shell has been improved.
- A notable number of code quality improvements suggested by KDEs automated quality control service EBN have been implemented.

kwave 0.7.8

kwave 0.7.8

kwave is a simple digital sound signal editor for KDE. more>>
Kwave is a sound editor designed for the KDE Desktop Environment.
It is still under continuous development but each official release should be considered to be stable. This is also the reason why releases come out only every few months: one of the goals of the project is to have a reliable and stable sound editor. Stability has a higher prority than the number of features. (The reason why I started to join this project was that I wanted to have a sound editor that does not crash every few minutes...)
After the big port to KDE2 it has temporarily fallen back to alpha state and some of the features of the old 0.5 version only will come back one by one. However, the program already seems to be useful for many people for most all-day work. Many missing functions and features will be ported in future versions...
Please keep in mind that the step from 0.5 to 0.6 was nearly a complete rewrite of the whole program and its internal architecture! The main focus was on robustness and a clean design, not on the pure amount of features.
Main features:
- KDE3 conform GUI
- 24 Bit Support
- Undo/Redo
- Simple Drag & Drop
- Realtime Pre-Listen for some effects
- Support for multi-track files
- Complete zoom and scroll-capability
- Playback via KDEs aRts or OSS (deprecated)
- Recording via OSS
- Load and edit-capability for large files (can use virtual memory)
- Reading and auto-repair of damaged wav-files
- Supports multiple windows
- Extendable Plugin interface
- a nice splashscreen
Plugins
- Amplify free
- Fadein and out
- Lowpass Filter
- Notch Filter
- Pitch Shift
- Playback
- Recording
- Silence
- Noise
- Sonagram
- Select Range
- Volume
- Import/Export of all file types supported by libaudiofile
- Import of MP3 through libmad and id3lib
- Import/Export of Ogg/Vorbis
- Import/Export of FLAC
Enhancements:
- bugfix: workaround for bug in ALSA, crashed when initializing the dsnoop plugin
- bugfix: error in swap file handling, one sample was destroyed when resizing. Affects cut, delete, crop and many other functions.
- fixed the incorrect usage of the word "loose" (thanks to J.T. Hundley)
- bugfix: went back to old implementation of ThreadsafeX11Guard class in order to fix a deadlock (closes sourceforge bug #1623357)
- documentation update: mention Subversion instead of CVS
- zero plugin: new mode, support for inserting a range filled with silence
- fixed the macro functions "Fade Leadin" and "Fade Leadout", using the new mode of the zero plugin

KBoggle 0.4.1

KBoggle 0.4.1

KBoggle is a Boggle game for KDE. more>>
This is KBoggle, a Boggle game for KDE. KBoggle is not finished yet, see the TODO file for details.
For those who dont know Boggle, its quite simple: make words of the letters you find in the grid. From a certain starting letter, you can go horizontal, vertical and diagonal to make words. Find as many words in the given time.
KBoggle uses KSpell for validating the words. To play with a wordlist, check your spell checker configuration in KDEs Control Center. If you dont have a spell checker backend installed, please install one. KSpell supports the following spell checkers:
ASpell
ISpell
HSpell (Hebrew)
If KSpell is not properly configured, KBoggle will show a warning. You can still play KBoggle then, but it doesnt check if the word is a valid word.
Enhancements:
- The accents feature in 0.4 was broken. Fixed.
- Save encoding of word list

KSmoothDock 4.5

KSmoothDock 4.5

KSmoothDock is a cool desktop panel for KDE 3.2 with smooth zooming. more>>
KSmoothDock is a cool desktop panel (like KDEs kicker) for KDE 3.2 with smooth zooming (2 modes: normal and parabolic).
As it is intended for KDE/Linux, its behaviour will be like that of kicker.
- Programming language: C++
- Libraries used: KDE 3.2
Installation:
Unzip, cd to the directory ksmoothdock then run:
./configure
make
su
make install
***IF you have problems compiling, try:
make -f Makefile.cvs
./configure --without-arts
make
su
make install
(thx 6thpink for this)
Then run:
ksmoothdock
(if when you run "ksmoothdock", nothing happens, then it is likely that your KDE dir is not standard. In this case, either:
- cd to the directory ksmoothdock/src, then run "./ksmoothdock", or
- Re-do the above sequence (./configure ...), but instead of "./configure", type:
./configure --prefix=/YOUR_KDE_DIR
)
Enhancements:
New features:
- New command line options:
- resetConfig reset configuration data
- resetLaunchers reset quick launchers data
Bug fixes:
- Fixed some display bugs (on both normal and parabolic zoom modes) in v4.4.

KMameleon 1.0pl2

KMameleon 1.0pl2

KMameleon is a slick and easy to use KDE XMame. more>>
KMameleon is a slick and easy to use KDE XMame. An UNIX/Linux/*BSD version of MAME, Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator wrapper.

It supports a vast section of options provided by the emulator, and it supports X11, SDL and XGL versions of it.

KMameleon is not really "just another XMame wrapper". It has really simple interface for game selection with a really powerful backend, which it makes it user-friendly for anyone. For newbies there can be just a couple of clickable options, which are stated "fullscreen" for the mode and "rompath" in "paths" module.

As in the very same time you have whole lots of options for the advanced user and (new in KMameleon 1.0) a module to write your own switches in, so if there are some new switches, or you feel better to keep all "under control", you can use that.

Actually... I havent seen any other _good_ XMame wrappers for KDE. There are 2, that I can name at this very moment: KMameRun (last release for KDE 1.1) and QtMAME, which is not that bad, but 1) natively is written in Spanish and 2) paths are fixed, and it doesnt honour the $HOME directory, and its written purely in Qt.

Thats not bad, but as KMameleon is natively written for KDE, it uses some of the KDEs nifty gadgets, like DCOP for having unique application and lots more.

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. more>>
KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. Its my hobby-project - just a way to get a better knowledge of KDEs internals.

Besides I wanted to learn programming C++ and since I believe the best way to learn programing is to write a program, I just made my mind to write a multimedia player.

Since it is a player, this word had to be in present in the title. The K and X appered there because of KDE (interface) and XINE (backend).

I took the decision to write a player because I needed one. I needed a good media player for KDE (something like XMMS with KDE inderface), which would be working as reliably as possible.

At present my PC is a 750MHz Duron with 128MB RAM and its almost imposible to work in OpenOffice.org and listen to MP3/OGG at the same time. Running XMMS and OpenOffice 1.x together on my Mandrake results in sound fragmentation.

For some time Ive been using boombox (you can find it in kde-apps). It is based on xine and I found it working better than xmms - almost no fragmentation. Unfortunately boomboxs interface is a bit strange (IMHO) and its not saving the equalizer settings (very annoying).

Kubuntu 6.06.1 (Dapper Drake)

Kubuntu 6.06.1 (Dapper Drake)

Kubuntu is an Ubuntu-derived distribution. more>>
Kubuntu is an Ubuntu-derived distribution. The Kubuntu CDs are made up of Ubuntus base plus KDE. You can get exactly the same effect by installing Ubuntu and adding the KDE packages from the Ubuntu archives.

Kubuntu is the result of several months effort to get KDE 3.4 into Ubuntus main repository and create the first major derived Ubuntu distribution. Kubuntu is not a fork of Ubuntu but an official project of it, sharing the same package archive and infrastructure. It is possible to convert an Ubuntu system to Kubuntu or vice versa.

Highlights of KDE 3.4 include the groupware manager Kontact 1.1, the multi-protocol instant messenger Kopete and the excellent KPDF reader. As well as official KDE applications Kubuntu also features the finest pick of leading Free Software desktop programmes.

KDEs default settings have been tweaked to Ubuntu standards while remaining true to KDE. Changes include sudo support, an uncluttered desktop and a tidied K-Menu for applications. Kubuntu developers come from the KDE and Debian communities and improvements are sent back to the original projects. Kubuntu would like to thank the KDE developers and Debian KDE packagers for their excellent work.

As an Ubuntu user you should already know that Ubuntu is based on the Debian distribution and ships, by default, with the GNOME desktop. When you tell people your distro of choice is Ubuntu, they will naturally assume you run a GNOME desktop.

Therefore, once you install KDE for Ubuntu, simply saying you are running Ubuntu can lead to some confusion in the support forums and on mailing lists. So, for purpose of clarity and to help avoid confusion, it was decided that KDE for Ubuntu will be affectionately known as "Kubuntu." This follows the long standing tradition of the KDE application naming convention, which entails adding K as the first letter of a KDE application name.

Kubuntu aims to be to KDE what Ubuntu is to Gnome: a great integrated distro with all the great features of Ubuntu, but based on the KDE desktop. Kubuntu is released regularly and predictably.
