KDE Kontact 1.2.5

KDE Kontact 1.2.5

KDE Kontact is a PIM (Personal Information Management) suite. more>>
Kontact Personal Information Management suite unites mature and proven KDE applications (called components in the context) under one roof. Thanks to the powerful KParts technology, all components are seamlessly integrated into one application.
The components of KDE Kontact are all shaped to work nice with each other. This results in features like intuitive drag n dropping between components and appointment handling, task lists and contacts.
KDE Kontact also extends its components with support for various groupware servers. When using these servers your workgroup will have access to features like shared email folders, group task lists, calendar sharing, central addressbooks and meeting scheduling.
In short: KDE Kontact delivers innovations to help you manage your communications more easily, organize your work faster and work together more closely, resulting in more productivity and efficiency in digital collaboration.
Main features:
The Summary Component
- This component is specially made for KDE Kontact. It provides both an overview of the other components and a selection of information gathered from the internet like weather info and headlines. In fact any RDF news feed can be added.
The Mail Component
- The mail component is provided by KMail, the KDE mail client -- a straight forward mail client that comes with all features you would expect.
The Calendar Component
- It is quite obvious that KOrganizer, again very mature KDE application, gets used as the calendar component. This feature-rich program is so easy to use and intuitive that you will quickly adopt it as your personal organizer. Extended with groupware functionality it can boost the communication within every workgroup.
The Contacts Component
- As the name implies: this component manages your valued contacts. The application providing this component is KAddressbook, a program that is deeply rooted into KDE. It was integrated in KMail and KOrganizer even before the KDE Kontact project was started
The Notes Component
- This component serves as your infinite block of digital sticky notes. Your can stick them on your desktop and they say visible even after closing KDE Kontact.
The News Component
- This straight forward, full-featured news reader is provided by KNode, KDEs default news reader.
The Sync Component
- KitchenSync, KDEs universal syncing application provides a framework for syncing with all kinds of devices. On one side it will have a plugin based interface with your mobile devices, like: PDAs and smart phones. On the other side it has conduits for connecting with other KDE Kontact components and external applications. The Sync component, provided by KitchenSync, is currently being implemented, therefore KitchenSync is not yet considered to be stable. Till the day that KitchenSync takes over we have two very nice applications that seamlessly integrate with KDE Kontact: KPilot for syncing with Palm compatible devices and Kandy for syncing with several mobile phone types. Eventually, KitchenSync will become a universal syncing framework.

KDE 4 Live CD 0.3.0

KDE 4 Live CD 0.3.0

KDE 4 Live CD is a live Linux distribution which contains the KDE 4 development release. more>>
KDE 4 Live CD is a live Linux distribution which contains the KDE 4 development release.

KDE is a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system.

KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Microsoft Windows. We believe that the UNIX operating system is the best operating system available today. In fact UNIX has been the undisputed choice of the information technology professional for many years.

When it comes to stability, scalability and openness there is no competition to UNIX. However, the lack of an easy to use contemporary desktop environment for UNIX has prevented UNIX from finding its way onto the desktops of the typical computer user in offices and homes. UNIX dominates the server market and is the preferred computing platform for computing professional and scientists.

Without UNIX the internet would not be. But UNIX did not address the needs of the average computer user. This fact is particularly unfortunate since a number of implementations of UNIX (Debian GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD etc.) are freely available on the internet. All of which are of exceptional quality and stability.

openSUSE KDE Tweaks 10.2

openSUSE KDE Tweaks 10.2

openSUSE KDE Tweaks are actually KDE 3.5.5 (openSUSE 10.2) patches and two RPM tools. more>>
openSUSE KDE Tweaks are actually KDE 3.5.5 (openSUSE 10.2) patches and two RPM tools through which I have added, modified and removed some features.
I like and dislike the new kickoff menu at the same time, so I decided to change everything about it that I dont like.
Although my patches were meant to change only the new kickoff menu, I ended up changing other parts of KDE, and even writing two little apps. The results of my hacking are all here, so make good use of it.
The patch provides the following modifications:
bi-kicker:
- Changes the order of the kickoff tabs to a more logical order (in order of access frequency): Favorites, Applications, History, Leave
- Removes the IMHO useless Computer tab (can be replaced with a sysinfo icon in the Favorites tab)
- Corrects the order of Grub entries (to descending) in the "Start Operating System" submenu
- Removes the useless "Restart and boot directly into ..." comments from the Start OS submenu
- Changes the order of the Recently Used Apps to the same order as in the old menu and as in the Recent Documents list (new at top, older at bottom)
- Lower the number of days a New Application entry is kept (1 instead of 3)
- Adds an Uninstall context menu entry which calls the uninstall_rpm script with the *.desktop file as the first parameter
- Changes in the old KMenu the "Recently Used Applications" tag to just "Recently Used" and the "Most Used Applications" tag to "Most Used"
- Adds a rounded corner to the left side of the search mode
bi-kicker_noshadow:
- Everything included in bi-kicker
- Removes the shadow surrounding the menu. Useful for those who enable the nVidia composite mode (providing a cool shadow for all active windows) and would like to avoid a strange double shadow effect.
bi-kdesktop:
- Prevents the unwanted realignment of desktop icons when the Auto Align
bi-kcontrol:
- Removed the "Get New Wallpapers" button from the Desktop Configuration Dialog, because it provides unfiltered access to images that are more and more shameless
- Changes the icon of the Display option (different from the Screensaver option)
bi-krpmview:
- Adds a "Quick Install" button to the krpmview kpart which calls the install_rpm script with the *.rpm file as the first parameter
The RPM-Tools provide:
- Simple and quick solution to install an RPM + konqueror service menu
- Simple and quick solution to uninstall an RPM + konqueror service menu
- No dependency handling

Ulteo-KDE Alpha1 (Sirius)

Ulteo-KDE Alpha1 (Sirius)

Ulteo is the easiest system to use on computers. more>>
Ulteo is the easiest system to use on computers. It is a new concept of an easy-to-use open-source "application system" which could change the way we all use computers.

As a result, users have to perform tasks that should be reserved to computer specialists, while we think that users should just spend time using the applications they need. Ulteo tries to provide answers to these issues.

The first answer we have is to consider the OS + applications as a whole system that we could call an "Application System". This system should:

1- always provide the most up to date stable features and self-upgrade automatically
2- require no, or very little, administration by the user
3- open users horizon to potentially every application which exists, the simple way

For this release of Ulteo Sirius Alpha1, we have focused on the first point. This means that after the first installation, Ulteo will try to check for any new versions available if a network connection is available, and self-upgrade by using an incremental upgrade mechanism.

What this means is that for the next alpha release version, no installation will be needed. Simply rebooting the system will be enough to get the new features and bug fixes.
