Fresco M2
Fresco is a distributed windowing system. more>>
Fresco project is a distributed windowing system.
Its a windowing system derived from a powerful structured graphics toolkit originally based on InterViews.
Fresco extends earlier incarnations to the status of a full windowing system, in command of the video hardware (via GGI, SDL, DirectFB or GLUT) and processing user input directly rather than peering with a host windowing system.
Additionally, Frescos extensions include a rich drawing interface with multiple backends, an upgrade to modern CORBA standards, a new Unicode-capable text system, dynamic module loading, and many communication abstractions for connecting other processes to the server.
It is developed entirely by volunteers on the internet, using free software, and released under the GNU Lesser General Public License.

PieSpy 0.4.0
PieSpy is an IRC bot that monitors a set of IRC channels. more>>
PieSpy is an IRC bot that monitors a set of IRC channels. It uses a simple set of heuristic methods to infer relationships between pairs of users. These inferrences allow PieSpy to build a mathematical model of a social network for any channel. These social networks can be drawn and used to create animations of evolving social networks.
PieSpy has also been used to visualize Shakespearean social networks. This page got slashdotted on 11 March 2004, with the site getting 250,000 hits per hour. Thanks to Notnet for making sure it all stayed alive!
PieSpy was presented at the Information Visualization conference (IV04) in July 2004. Read the full paper online. It has also appeared in Computer Weekly, ct magazine, and I was interviewed live on BBC Radio Kent.
Enhancements:
- Now tracks nickname changes. Generates images five times faster. Removes formatting and colors from messages. The source code has been refactored to make it easy to add new InferenceHeuristics, which are used to work out who is talking to whom - if you create any good ones, let me know! The config file lets you apply different weightings to each InferenceHeuristic.

Open Administration for Schools 2.40
Open Administration for Schools is a Web-based school administration package. more>>
Open Admin for Schools is a School Administration Program. It is a freely available, open source software package and is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Open Administration for Schools project is entirely web based and can run from a centrally located division wide server or a single computer in a school. It is designed to support an entire division on one or more central computers but can also work just fine for a single school.
Currently several school divisions use this approach and have 15+ schools on a single central server. This is because it is designed to be lightweight both in server resource requirements and in communication bandwidth.
It is secure. Each school has two or more virtual websites and each is protected with password(s). One site, the admin site, is used by the school office and another, the teacher site, is used by teachers in the classroom.
The teacher site also has password access for entering attendance by teachers and also uses cookies that expire in a short period, further limiting access. Another site, a parent/student site, is controlled by parent/student userids and passwords. A fourth virtual site may be used by school liason officers from outside agencies to give them a slightly different access to school information. (Community Schools)
Main features:
- Demographics - It stores student and family information that can be viewed and printed in a variety of ways.
- Attendance - Attendance can be entered either by secretaries in the school office or by teachers in the classroom. It features the ability to do different numbers of periods per day for elementary grades vs high school and middle years. This will allow elementary classes to have 2 classes per day (AM/PM) with a homeroom teacher while higher grades can have attendance done on a per subject period basis (and be subject based). Attendance reports are integrated with report cards/progress reports. A variety of attendance reports are available. A variety of attendance entry methods are available for use by teachers and/or secretaries to allow it to integrate with normal school practice.
- Discipline - A simple discipline module to track student discipline events and track outcomes, etc. Behaviours may be categorized and statistical reports may be printed. Enrollment changes are also posted into this system.
- Report Card System - a flexible reporting system with per subject objectives (up to 20), integrated attendance reporting, etc. All report cards are printed as PDF reports and may include a school logo. All subjects may have unlimited length text comments, and can have any desired ordering. Attendance reporting will now do days open, days enrolled, days absent, and times late as standard.
- IEP (Special Needs) Site that is integrated at the division level that allows special needs teachers to tailor individual student programs that can be viewed from each schools teacher site. This includes the ability to add student medical history, testing done, student teams (and responsibilities), and objectives chosen from lists of thousands, categorized in a variety of ways. There can be up to 32 objectives per subject and each subject is specific to that particular child. His/her program would consist of a variety of subjects in areas such as fine motor control, etc.
- This system can generate progress reports (for use with the report card system) as well as a comprehensive IEP report containing the yearly plan for the child. This IEP can also viewed from the teacher site, to ensure compliance throughout the year.
- Export/Import Modules - to allow students to easily transfer schools within divisions without re-entry of demographic information. Export of data to other programs. Export of data to Provincial authorities via an automated XML based transfer mechanism.
- Saskatchewan SDS support for direct XML transfers of student demographic, subject and enrollment marks to provincial authorities.
- Online Gradebook to allow teachers to enter marks and assessments onine from school or home. It can group and weight assessment items and post directly into the report card system.
- Parent Viewing scripts to allow parents to view attendance, gradebook(where allowed), and report card marks. This is easily integrated into existing school sites.
- Upcoming: Family functions, Parent-Teacher Interview Scheduling, Wherever schools want to go...
- Further out... Multi-language support (demand for a Spanish version exists currently), Student timetabling.
Enhancements:
- A new Fees System to allow fee charging (predefined or new, with various groups), invoice printing, payments and receipts, and the ability to export summary journal transactions to an external accounting program.
- A new teacher logout to remove session data has been added.
- There is a new 70 page User Documentation PDF and a 40 page Administration Documentation PDF (also available in HTML versions).

Xfce 4 Xfapplet Plugin 0.1.0
Xfce 4 Xfapplet Plugin is a plugin which allows one to use applets designed for the Gnome Panel inside the Xfce Panel. more>>
Xfce 4 Xfapplet Plugin is a plugin for the Xfce 4 Panel which allows one to use applets designed for the Gnome Panel inside the Xfce Panel. You can think of XfApplet as a tiny Gnome Panel that lives inside the Xfce Panel and allows you to show the same applets that the Gnome Panel is capable of showing.
The current stable version of the XfApplet Plugin has the following features:
Most Gnome applets are supported. Basically the only exceptions are the Gnome Systray and Window List applets, which should be considered not very well supported. This should be fixed in the next stable version;
The XfApplet properties dialog allows you to choose between all Gnome applets currently installed, just as the Gnome Panel does.
The XfApplet context menu shows both the Xfce Panel related items (such as “Move”, “Remove”, “Customize Panel”, etc.) and the Gnome applet ones, which of course will depend on the specific applet being displayed.
Applets are displayed correctly in terms of layout, popup menus and other issues no matter the Xfce Panel specific configuration such as position (top, bottom, left or right side and floating) and size.
By now you may be wondering: why would someone write XfApplet? The motivations for both starting and maintaining this project can be resumed as follows:
Olivier Fourdan (Xfce project leader) was asked in his interview in FOSDEM 2005 about the possibility of integration between the Gnome Panel applets and the Xfce Panel. His answer stated that (by that time) the Xfce Panel did not support stand alone applets such as the Gnome Panel, but instead one could write a plugin for the Xfce Panel that was capable of showing Gnome applets.
Software reusability is very common in FOSS projects, especially in code level. XfApplet allows for reusability in component level by linking against the Bonobo infra-structure and the Xfce Panel libraries. So there’s no need to rewrite every single Gnome applet against Xfce libraries; all of them can be used out of the box from within both the Xfce and Gnome panels.
Many new Xfce users come from Gnome or at least have a good Gnome experience. The possibility of using Gnome applets inside the Xfce Panel makes the experience of moving from Gnome to Xfce or even using both desktop environments easier.
Usage:
Using XfApplet is quite easy, specially because XfApplet itself doesn’t have any special functionallity; its only purpose is to display Gnome applets. To learn how to use a specific Gnome applet you will have to refer to the applet’s particular documentation.
Assuming that you have properly built and installed XfApplet, you need only to right click the Xfce Panel and choose “Add New Item”. You should find the XfApplet Plugin in the list of available plugins for the Xfce Panel.
After adding XfApplet to the Xfce Panel (either by clicking “Add” or by drag and drop), you’ll get an empty XfApplet. An empty XfApplet displays nothing but a small icon with the Xfce mice and the Gnome foot. Right click the icon and choose “Properties”. This will open the XfApplet properties dialog where you will be able to choose any Gnome applet installed by either double clicking it or hitting “OK”.
At any time you can change the applet displayed through the XfApplet properties dialog. Each instance of XfApplet is capable of displaying only one Gnome applet; so if you want to display several applets you will have to add a XfApplet instance for each one of them.
