Allocation of economic resources by financial mechanisms is an essential part of modern economies, and financial innovations have been a powerful force for human progress. Information technology provides the opportunity to create new economic instruments derived from any arbitrary element of information.
Information currency units are economically scarce objects that are issued and maintained by a service that establishes a correspondence between underlying units of information and information currency. Information currency will enable the application of economic mechanisms for information management and valuation.
Information currency units can be traded for other economic instruments, and the trade value of information currency units provides an economic valuation of the underlying information.
Enhancements:
- This release adds the first code for trading information currency, as well as a new Internet draft with an example trade.

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution. more>>
Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?
Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months. All released versions of Linux Mint are actively supported and some of the releases (possibly Bianca or Cassandra) will come with a Long Term Support guarantee (a guarantee that our Support Center will support these releases for the years to come).
Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?
Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and were working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. If youre running a 5 years old non-free operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP you should definitely be impressed. We like hearing about your experience and taking your suggestions onboard so please give us your feedback.
Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?
Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if youre unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.
Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?
It doesnt. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).
What about proprietary software?
We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didnt give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.

Stanford Exploration Project Library 6.5.1

Stanford Exploration Project Library 6.5.1

Stanford Exploration Project Library improves the theory and practice of constructing 3-D and 4-D images of the earth. more>>
Stanford Exploration Project Library (or SEP, for short) is an industry-funded academic consortium whose purpose is to improve the theory and practice of constructing 3-D and 4-D images of the earth from seismic echo soundings.
Although most of our research is targeted at improvements in the geophysical survey contracting industry, about half of our sponsors and alumni are in the petroleum industry because we focus on overcoming technological limitations of the geophysical survey industry.
SEP pioneered innovations in migration imaging, velocity estimation, dip moveout and slant stack. Today our focus is on 3-D seismic applications such as velocity estimation, wavefield-continuation prestack migration, multidimensional image estimation, and 4-D (time-lapse) reservoir monitoring.
Besides 3-D reflection seismic data, we undertake small 2-D imaging projects with geophysical data of all kinds. The diversity of applications exercises our judgment and skill at combining fundamentals of statistical signal theory, optimization theory, numerical analysis, and wave propagation theory, and this has led us to numerous improvements and some breakthroughs.
We organize our research to facilitate technology transfer by using a formal method of makefile rules. With these, most of our research results are verified by someone other than the original researcher. Research progress reports at least four years old and all PhD theses are made available to the public through our web site.
Enhancements:
- Numerous major new features and major bugfixes.

DragonFly BSD 1.10.1

DragonFly BSD 1.10.1

DragonFly is an operating system and environment designed to be the logical continuation of the FreeBSD-4.x OS series. more>>
DragonFly is an Linux operating system and environment designed to be the logical continuation of the FreeBSD-4.x OS series. These operating systems belong in the same class as Linux in that they are based on UNIX ideals and APIs. DragonFly is a fork in the path, so to speak, giving the BSD base an opportunity to grow in an entirely new direction from the one taken in the FreeBSD-5 series.

It is our belief that the correct choice of features and algorithms can yield the potential for excellent scalability, robustness, and debuggability in a number of broad system categories. Not just for SMP or NUMA, but for everything from a single-node UP system to a massively clustered system. It is our belief that a fairly simple but wide-ranging set of goals will lay the groundwork for future growth.

The existing BSD cores, including FreeBSD-5, are still primarily based on models which could at best be called strained as they are applied to modern systems. The true innovation has given way to basically just laying on hacks to add features, such as encrypted disks and security layering that in a better environment could be developed at far less cost and with far greater flexibility.

We also believe that it is important to provide API solutions which allow reasonable backwards and forwards version compatibility, at least between userland and the kernel, in a mix-and-match environment. If one considers the situation from the ultimate in clustering... secure anonymous system clustering over the internet, the necessity of having properly specified APIs becomes apparent.

Finally, we believe that a fully integrated and feature-full upgrade mechanism should exist to allow end users and system operators of all walks of life to easily maintain their systems. Debian Linux has shown us the way, but it is possible to do better.

DragonFly is going to be a multi-year project at the very least. Achieving our goal set will require a great deal of groundwork just to reposition existing mechanisms to fit the new models. The goals link will take you to a more detailed description of what we hope to accomplish.

1.2.0 is our second major DragonFly release and the first one which we have created a separate CVS branch for. DragonFlys policy is to only commit bug fixes to release branches.

This release represents a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the kernel infrastructure. DragonFly is still running under the Big Giant Lock, but this will probably be the last release where that is the case.

The greatest progress has been made in the network subsystem. The TCP stack is now almost fully threaded (and will likely be the first subsystem we remove the BGL from in coming months). The TCP stack now fully supports the SACK protocol and a large number of bug and performance fixes have gone in, especially in regard to GigE performance over LANs.

The namecache has been completely rewritten and is now considered to be production-ready with this release. The rewrite will greatly simplify future filesystem work and is a necessary precursor for our ultimate goal of creating a clusterable OS.

This will be last release that uses GCC 2.95.x as the default compiler. Both GCC 3.4.x and GCC 2.95.x are supported in this release through the use of the CCVER environment variable (gcc2 or gcc34). GCC 2.95.x is to be retired soon due to its lack of TLS support. The current development branch will soon start depending heavily on TLS support and __thread both within the kernel and in libc and other libraries. This release fully supports TLS segments for programs compiled with gcc-3.4.x.

It goes without saying that this release is far more stable then our 1.0A release. A huge number of bug fixes, performance improvements, and design changes have been made since the 1.0A release.

Free Digital Money 0.2

Free Digital Money 0.2

Free Digital Money is a free open source project aimed at promoting ideas and stimulating further innovation. more>>
Free Digital Money projetc is aimed at promoting ideas and stimulating further innovation in the field of digital bearer money.
Digital bearer money is like cash and can be transferred person-to-person without going through a bank or PayPal account.
Scope
The scope of this project is necessarily limited; digital bearer money schemes are difficult to implement.
The project will develop and release a Digital Money system and applications, suitable for teaching and idea-testing.
The current release (V0.2) delivers a basic digital PGP-based coin system.
The next release will provide a transport mechanism to send the coins to an intended recipient; and a client application (a Wallet).
How You Can Help
We welcome technical help in a variety of forms:
- Application writers and visionaries: to use the FreeDMoney software to experiment with new ideas
- Coders: to extend the current software or to implement a completely new payment system
- Vendors of existing digital payment schemes: to implement a FDM interface to their code
Educational Usage
Students (and others) are welcome and encouraged to use FreeDMoney as a basis for discussing other considerations of building a secure payment systems.
Examples:
- What technical peer-review process would be required to be confident in the security of the system?
- What are the limitations in the model that would need to be overcome in order to make this into a technically sound basis for a real-world, real-value payment system?
- Assuming these limitations had been overcome, what operational considerations would need to be addressed to deliver a secure, reliable payment system?
- How do existing payment systems address these issues?
What legal and regulatory issues would need to be addressed in the target jurisdictions?
Enhancements:
- Initial Coin implementation and "test bank" Web application.

Linux QoS Library 0.8.0

Linux QoS Library 0.8.0

Linux QoS Library is a C API for the network QoS features of the Linux kernel. more>>
The Linux QoS Library (LQL) provides a GPL licensed, GObject based C API to manipulate the network queueing disciplines, classes and classifiers in the Linux kernel.

LQL does not use the TC command as a back-end. Instead, LQL communicates with the Linux kernel via Netlink sockets the same way TC does.
At the present time, LQL implements a subset of the Linux network QoS features exposed by the TC command.

Hopefully, this will change as the library matures.
In an ideal world TC would be implemented with a high(er) level API like LQL so that new kernel network QoS features would be immediately available to third party applications using the high level library.

Who knows what interesting innovations would have been created around the Linux network QoS features over the last few years if there was an easier API to manipulate them. LQL is an attempt to fill this need.

Queueing disciplines currently supported by LQL:

HTB
PFIFO
SFQ
PFIFOFast
Priomap
DSMark
Netem

Classifiers currently supported by LQL:

U32
Fwmark
TCIndex

Eclipse Web Tools Platform Project 1.0

Eclipse Web Tools Platform Project 1.0

Eclipse Web Tools Platform Project is a top-level Eclipse project that contains tools for developing Java Web applications. more>>
Eclipse Web Tools Platform Project is a top-level Eclipse project that contains tools for developing Java Web applications.
The WTP project includes the following tools: source editors for HTML, Javascript, CSS, JSP, SQL, XML, DTD, XSD, and WSDL; graphical editors for XSD and WSDL; J2EE project natures, builders, and models and a J2EE navigator; a Web service wizard and explorer, and WS-I Test Tools; and database access and query tools and models.
Main features:
- Extension of the Eclipse value proposition The Eclipse Project has set a high standard for technical excellence, functional innovation and overall extensibility within the Java IDE domain. We intend to apply these same standards to the Web/J2EE application-tooling domain.
- Vendor ecosystem A major goal of this project is to support a vital application development tools market. Its exemplary functionality will be useful on its own but it will be designed from the start to be extensible so commercial vendors can use what this project delivers as a foundation for their own product innovation and development efficiency.
- Vendor neutrality Vendor neutrality will be at the core of this project. We aim to encourage Eclipse participation and drive Eclipse market acceptance by strengthening the long-term product value propositions of the widest possible range of application development vendors.
- Standards-based innovation This project will deliver an extensible, standards-based tooling foundation on which the widest possible range of vendors can create value-added development products for their customers and end-users. Where standards exist, we will adhere to them. At least, at first, where standards are emerging, we will wait for them to emerge; this can be re-evaluated later according to user needs and contributor availability. Where multiple technologies are widely used for a given functional need, we will attempt to support each, subject only to technical feasibility and our goal of providing the most capable and extensible foundation long term.
- Agile development Our aim is to incorporate into our planning process the innovations that arise once a project is underway, and the feedback from our user community on our achievements to date. We think an agile development and planning process, in which progress is incremental, near-term deliverables are focused, and long-term planning is flexible, will be the best way to achieve this.
- Inclusiveness & diversity We aim to assimilate the best ideas from the largest number of participants representing the needs of the widest range of end-users. So we will encourage organizations across a broad range of technical, market and geographical domains to participate in this project.
