Infrared-HOWTO explains how to use the software provided by the Linux/IrDA project.

The Infrared-HOWTO (formerly known as the IR-HOWTO) is an introduction to Linux and infrared devices and how to use the software provided by the Linux/IrDA project.

This package uses IrDA(TM) compliant standards.

Remote Control (RC) via infrared is not the aim of the project, though this topic is partly treated in the HOWTO.

ir-root-controller is a small daemon which listens to the LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control) daemon and executes system events.
ir-root-controller is intended to be run as a system daemon and does not require any user to have set up LIRC or events for LIRC.
An example application would be changing the global system volume irrespective of what applications are running or which users (if any) are logged in.

local-remote-controll-gui is a Lazarus/(freepascal) programmed software for running commands on remote "server" or machine, true a file shearing.(like sshfs..)... some customize options, GUI on the user/machine...linux ppc and linux x86, the source binary enabled.

rmRemote project lets you remote control xmms with a REALmagic Remote. In the future it may be used to control everything in your house if you add the functionality.

Getcontrol project is a GNOME 2 multimedia frontend.

It aims to play DivX, DVD, MP3, Ogg, and Shoutcast streams,and also provide digital photo viewing, video conferencing, etc., all connected with your remote control and running on your TV out.
It relies on Gstreamer for multimedia playback.
Indeed even with a smart lirc configuration it was a real maze to launch any DVD player application, or even a simple XMMS.
My wife just turned crazy and was not able to use it. I realized that compared to a hardware player my remotelly controlled linux box was not so friendly to use.
Then i took my Anjuta IDE, some docs from gnome.org websites and started to develop my own coherent GUI for this multimedia box.

Device Control Device is a platform independent remote telescope and device control program compatible with the INDI standard (see http://indi.sourceforge.net/).

This program is a client (a user interface) and provides functions to control devices connected to a remote system that is running an INDI server.

The features and the structure of the GUI are similar to the Kstars INDI client. The only advantages are support for Windows and lower resource requirements.

File::Remote is a Perl module to read/write/edit remote files transparently.

This module takes care of dealing with files regardless of whether theyre local or remote. It allows you to create and edit files without having to worry about their physical location on the network. If a file passed into a function is of the form host:/path/to/file, then File::Remote uses rsh/rcp (or ssh/scp, depending on how you configure it) to edit the file remotely. Otherwise, it assumes the file is local and passes calls directly through to Perls core functions.

The nice thing about this module is that you can use it for all your file calls, since it handles both remote and local files transparently. This means you dont have to put a whole bunch of checks for remote files in your code. Plus, if you use the function-oriented interface along with the :replace tag, you can actually redefine the Perl builtin file functions. This means that your existing Perl scripts can automatically handle remote files with no re-engineering(!).
