inetrd is a super server like inetd (i.e., it listens on many ports).
Clients connecting can then be redirected to other ports or servers in various ways.

linux-identd is a user identification daemon for Linux, which implements the Identification Protocol (RFC1413). This protocol is used to identify active TCP connections.
The daemon listens to TCP port 113 (auth) and can be run either as a stand-alone daemon or through inetd(8). This program is licensed through the GNU General Public License.
Installation:
To compile and install this program:
$ make
$ make install
To start identd in daemon mode:
$ /usr/sbin/identd -d
To start identd through inetd add the following line to /etc/inetd.conf:
auth stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/in.identd in.identd
Thats it!
Enhancements:

bsidentd provides a minimal and secure identd server that can generate random usernames.
bsidentd is a bare minimum and secure identd server, based on nullidentd. It can generate a random string for a username. It makes IRC servers happy, and it helps avoid ban scripts by not having a fixed username.
Alternately, a fixed username can be specified on the command line.
Installation? The usual. Check the makefile, make install then add an entry to
inetd.conf:
auth stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/sbin/nullidentd
Enhancements:
- Added query limit.
- Patch from Sven Oliver Moll to allow a username to be specified on the command line. bsidentd can now fully replace nullidentd.
- Debian package

CB3ROB Identd is an identd implementing the auth (RFC1413) protocol for use on public Unix machines. Unlike with other ident daemons, the AUTH protocol replies from this daemon cannot be spoofed by users.
CB3ROB Identd project has been optimized to handle as many requests as possible, and has been tested to work on most Linux distributions without modification.
Installation:
- become root
- unpack the files ("tar -xvzf cb3rob-identd-1.2.tgz")
- chdir to the cb3rob-identd directory ("cd cb3rob-identd")
- type "make install"
- add the service to your inet daemon (inetd or xinetd) config file
- restart inetd or xinetd

FireFTP is an FTP server designed for web hosting providers. It uses a two-part design to provide a top-level "virtual" directory with a series of subdirectories underneath.
Each subdirectory can be owned by a different user; FireFTP chroot()s and setuid()s as it moves into each directory.
The end effect of this is to enable configurations where multiple users can have access to one directory and one user can have access to multiple directories, and system disk quotas still function as normal.
Installation:
./configure
make
(su to root or use sudo)
make install
FireFTP expects to be started as root from tcpserver (part of the ucspi-tcp package, see http://cr.yp.to); it may have issues when running under inetd or xinetd, due to tcpserver
environment variables that it expects to see.
A sample run file for svscan to start the process is provided in the contrib/ directory of the distribution.

It includes with it the ability to run as an inetd process (Net::Server::INET), a single connection server (Net::Server or Net::Server::Single), a forking server (Net::Server::Fork), a preforking server which maintains a constant number of preforked children (Net::Server::PreForkSimple), or as a managed preforking server which maintains the number of children based on server load (Net::Server::PreFork). In all but the inetd type, the server provides the ability to connect to one or to multiple server ports.
Net::Server uses ideologies of Net::FTPServer in order to provide extensibility. The additional server types are made possible via "personalities" or sub classes of the Net::Server. By moving the multiple types of servers out of the main Net::Server class, the Net::Server concept is easily extended to other types (in the near future, we would like to add a "Thread" personality).
Net::Server borrows several concepts from the Apache Webserver. Net::Server uses "hooks" to allow custom servers such as SMTP, HTTP, POP3, etc. to be layered over the base Net::Server class. In addition the Net::Server::PreFork class borrows concepts of min_start_servers, max_servers, and min_waiting servers.
Net::Server::PreFork also uses the concept of an flock serialized accept when accepting on multiple ports (PreFork can choose between flock, IPC::Semaphore, and pipe to control serialization).

The stunnel program is designed to work as an SSL encryption wrapper between remote client and local (inetd-startable) or remote server.
