Altse Internet Search Engine 26102005
ALTSE is an alternative search engine technology. more>>
ALTSE is an alternative search engine technology.
It can index up to a couple million Web sites.
A search engine is a program designed to help find information stored on a computer system such as the World Wide Web, or a personal computer.
The search engine allows one to ask for content meeting specific criteria (typically those containing a given word or phrase) and retrieves a list of references that match those criteria.
Search engines use regularly updated indexes to operate quickly and efficiently. Without further qualification, search engine usually refers to a Web search engine, which searches for information on the public Web.
Other kinds of search engine are enterprise search engines, which search on intranets and personal search engines, which search individual personal computers.
Some search engines also mine data available in newsgroups, large databases, or open directories like DMOZ.org. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically.
Most web sites which call themselves search engines, are actually front ends to other search engines owned by other companies. The typical user will often not know which underlying search engine they are using.

Magellan Metasearch 1.4.2
Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine. more>>
Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users to monitor as many search engines as they want.
Magellan Metasearch provides a complex query language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through pages metadata), and proximity operators.
This language enables users to perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way.
In conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.
Enhancements:
- This release enhances the automated parsing mechanism ; it also fixes a problem with small result sets that occasionally couldnt be extracted.
- Moreover, new virtual sources are automatically tested on creation / update to check their validity.

ImageServer 0.5
ImageServer is a software for maintaining archives of images. more>>
ImageServer is a software for maintaining archives of images. Theres much software available to manually view, categorize and search images. ImageServer was designed to solve a different problem:
Imagine being a photographer or photo agency: You have a lot of images in many formats, all stored in a directory structure - your archive.
This creates at least two problems:
- The archive may contain different images with the same name. What do you do when a customer orders "flowers.tif" and this name exists in twenty different subfolders in your archive?
- The customer doesnt need your original 22megapixel 16-bit tiff file for his powerpoint presentation or layouting, he wants a small jpeg instead.
The first problem can be managed by assigning unique names to images every time an image is put into the archive.
The second problem is a little more difficult. Youll have to convert the requested images to smaller JPEGs. After doing that for too many times, you start caching the small JPEGs so you wont have to convert again for the next customer asking for that image. But then, you edit the original image and forget to update the JPEGs. Furthermore, its not enough to keep these resized jpegs for presentations, your customers graphics department also wants correctly downsampled eps images for layouting advertisements in QuarkXPress. So you start having two slaveArchives - one with JPEG and one with EPS images - and spend half of your day trying to synchronize the three.
ImageServer solves both problems automatically. It is a program with a nice GUI, configured to watch your masterArchive. As soon as images are put into any subfolder, theyll be assigned unique names if necessary. Afterwards, each image is read, and for each defined slaveArchive, a preview is created and saved. The same happens when an image in the masterArchive is altered. All this works completely automatically, theres nothing youll have to do; the GUI is just for being able to watch whats happening.
Main features:
- Input file checking: as soon as an image is put into the archive, ImageServer checks the extension to see whether it really is an image. If not, it is put into a specified folder outside of the archive.
- If configured to do so, an image without a suiting name is assigned a new name which is constructed of both the subfolders it resides in and a unique-per-subfolder serial number of arbitrary length.
- When detecting a change in the masterArchive, ImageServer can play a sound.
- When starting to convert an image, ImageServer can play a sound.
- ImageServer can remember the names it has already assigned to images in the past. This way, names assigned to an image A will never be assigned to another image B after A has been deleted.
- Any number of slaveArchives can be defined, and they can be in any location.
- Each defined slaveArchive can have completely different settings for the images that will populate it. Resizing or resampling? RGB or CMYK? Jpeg, EPS, PNG or TIFF?
- You can choose whether each slaveArchive should inherit the exact same directory structure from the masterArchive or whether the slaveArchives images should all be put into the same folder.
- In case dazuko missed something, you can tell imageserver to manually look into a folder. It can then either process all images in that folder or only those where slaveArchive-images are missing.

LinkMachine
LinkMachine project helps you build as large a reciprocal link program as youd like. more>>
The key to success for a web site is good search engine ranking. All of the major search engines use link popularity to determine how well a site will rank - so the more high quality, relevant links that lead to your site, the higher it will rank. LinkMachine makes it easy to get the links you need by helping you establish hundreds of quality, relevant link exchanges.
LinkMachine will help you:
- Climb to the top of the search engines
- Gain quality links to your site today
- Automate your link management
- Uncover exactly how to beat your top competitors
- Attract thousands more targeted visitors to your site
The most effective way to interest webmasters in linking to your site is by offering to exchange reciprocal links. This is a win-win situation - both of your web sites benefit from new targeted, relevant links.
LinkMachine project helps you build as large a reciprocal link program as youd like. Search engines see all of the new links pointing from other quality, relevant sites to your site, and increase your rank. Note that this is very different from using indiscriminate "link farms", which will give you no advantage with the search engines.
Google recently revealed the secrets of its search ranking technology by filing a patent application. What we found out is that Google values organic link building - link building that progresses naturally rather than appearing artificial. LinkMachine is the ideal tool for building link exchanges the way Google likes them.
LinkMachines InstantLinks system and link search tools allow you to grow your link exchanges gradually and gain links from many different sites. And with LinkMachines Alternate Profiles feature, you can easily benefit from having the links to your site use a diverse variety of anchor text.

URI::ParseSearchString 1.0
URI::ParseSearchString is a Perl module that can parse Apache refferer logs and extract search engine query strings. more>>
URI::ParseSearchString is a Perl module that can parse Apache refferer logs and extract search engine query strings.
SYNOPSIS
use URI::ParseSearchString ( parse_search_string );
$string = parse_search_string(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=a+simple+test&btnG=Google+Search) ;
FUNCTIONS
parse_search_string
This module provides a simple function to parse and extract search engine query strings. It was designed and tested having Apache referrer logs in mind. It can be used for a wide number of purposes, including tracking down what keywords people use on popular search engines before they land on a site. It makes use of URI::split to extract the string and URI::Escape to un-escape the encoded characters in it. Although a number of existing modules and scripts exist for this purpose, the majority of them are either outdated using obsolete search strings associated with each engine.
The default function exported is "parse_search_string" which accepts an unquoted referrer string as input and returns the search engine query contained within. It currently works with both escaped and un-escaped queries and will translate the search terms before returning them in the latter case. The function returns undef in all other cases and errors.
for example:
$string = parse_search_string(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=a+simple+test&btnG=Google+Search) ;
would return a simple test
whereas
$string = parse_search_string(http://www.mamma.com/Mamma?utfout=1&qtype=0&query=a+more%21+complex_+search%24?mit=%C2%A0%C2%A0Search%C2%A0%C2%A0) ;
would return a more! complex_ search$
Currently supported search engines include:
- AOL (UK)
- AllTheWeb
- Blueyonder (UK)
- Feedster Blog Search
- Fireball (DE)
- Froogle

Image Database 2.1
KDE Image Database (KimDaBa) is a tool for indexing, searching, and viewing images. more>>
If you are like me you have hundreds or even thousands of images ever since you got your first camera, some taken with a normal camera other with a digital camera.
Through all the years you believed that until eternity you would be able to remember the story behind every single picture, you would be able to remember the names of all the persons on your images, and you would be able to remember the exact date of every single image.
I personally realized that this was not possible anymore, and especially for my digital images - but also for my paper images - I needed a tool to help me describe my images, and to search in the pile of images. This is exactly what KimDaba is all about.
With KimDaBa it is today possible for me to find any image I have in less than 5 seconds, let that be an image with a special person, an image from a special place, or even both.
There is of course no such thing as free lunch - with KimDaBa this means that you have to annotate all your images before you are set. KimDaBa is, however, highly optimized for annotating images, so annotating 100 images in 10 minutes are no way impossible.
Enhancements:
- BUGFIX: Using kapp->invokeHelp to show help rather than kapp->invokeBrowser, as the later doesnt work unless your default browser is konqueror.
- BUGFIX: the category was sometimes shown twice in the status bar
- BUGFIX: remove tokens didnt work for KDE 3.4

Multi_Search 0.1.4
Multi_Search is a desktop search widget for Superkaramba. more>>
Multi_Search is a desktop search widget for Superkaramba.
Requirements:
NOTE: A new requirement for version 0.1.0 is the wxPython module. You will not be able to use the new options in this version without wxPython. If you choose not to install wxPython you can still do the old configure options such as change background/default browser/and add search engines, but none of the new features, those need wxPython.
What It Does:
This widget allows one to search almost any search engine right from their desktop. It also gives the ability to run terminal commands. The theme launches the search in your default browser(setup in the right click Configure Theme menu). Click on the icon to the left of the searchbox to change the search engine.
You can add your own search engines to the widget through the right click Configure Theme Menu. This will take a search url and add it and its associated favicon, if it has one, to your widget.
You also have the ability edit and remove existing search engines and change the icon for a search engine.
There are also 8 backgrounds to choose from which can be found in the right click Configure Theme menu.
If anyone has any problems, comments, or ideas I would be glad to hear them.
