id3lib project is an open-source, cross-platform software development library for reading, writing, and manipulating meta-information in digital audio files.
Currently id3lib supports reading and writing of ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags, as well as reading of Lyrics3, Lyrics3 v2.00, and MusicMatch tags. id3lib is written in C++, but provides both C and COM interfaces to the library.

mplib is a C library that enables programms to access ID3 tags in MP3 files. ID3 tags are meta-informations such as the title, artist or comments that come with most MP3s. mplib supports ID3 version 1 and version 2 tags. It is written to be very easy to use, fast and cross-platform capable.
Mplib is written to be very easy to use, fast, cross-platform capable and small size when built with other applications. Its currently only able to handle common tag fields like artist, comment, etc. out of the box. Ill include support for more special Id3 fields in v2 tags from contributors if anyone sends me the nessecarry code. Im just to lazy to implement all the 70 frame types (type of informations you can include in a v2 tag) just on chance somebody could use some of them. If you think you need to store urgently a Musician credit list or Event timing codes write me and I will hack you the code if I have the time
for it.
And yeah, theres a allready a library written by the people who are responsible for the ID3 standard, consider to use id3lib if you dont like mplib :-P
You should start with a short introduction on the API and usage of mplib youll find in the download section of the sourceforge project page. As I wrote above, it was important for me that this libarary is easy to use, because I think the reading a artist name from a mp3 file should really not be a big deal.

- created oxygen style code comments

gst-id3v23-tags application provides a gstreamer plugin that adds metadata to media files (mainly MP3 audio files) with ID3 version 2.3.0 tags. This information includes elements such as the tracks title, author, performing artist, etc.
Other gstreamer taggers either create ID3 1.0 tags, which have significant limitations, or ID3 2.4 tags, which are not understood by as many MP3 players as ID3 2.3.
The gstreamer framework provides already some ID3 taggers, at least two of them one that encodes the in the version 1.0 and the other in the 2.4. Today most software and hardware mp3 players are able to understand at least one of the two formats. The problem is that not all MP3 players (specially the hardware ones) are able to understand ID3 v2.4 tags and using ID3 v1.0 can have some limitations specially with tags that contain UNICODE characters. Its most likely that today a decent MP3 player will be able to understand ID3 v2.3 tags.
This plugin was written in order to provide an alternative to MP3 players that can understand only ID3 v2.3 tags. This plugin should provide a nicer alternative to the end user over the two existing plugin in the gstreamer framework.
The ID3 v2.3 encoding is actually performed through the library id3lib which is available at http://www.id3lib.org/. The plugin it self depends only on the gstreamer framework (version 0.10) and the library id3lib (version 3.8.3).
To compile do:
make plugin
To install the plugin into your home account (no need to be root) just do:
make install
To use the plugin, just include the element id3v23 in any gstreamer pipeline. Heres an example on how to retag an old MP3 using the command line:

KMK 0.23.15.5 with its excellent features will surely help you in daily life. It is actually a KDE music cataloger software for Linux/KDE 3, which is aimed at allowing fast searches through big amounts of supported audio files (as of KMK 0.23.5 mp3, ogg, ape), and providing the necessary tools for managing their names and tags - tool to convert tags to filename and one for filling file tags, based on its name.
KMK 0.23.14 added drag support to the table, for example, allowing you to find all files with specific Artist tag and drop them in K3B. To actually play something it uses the XMMS player, but changes to this are planned. The path to the xmms binary is hardcoded in the sources to "/usr/sbin/xmms", but that is going to change - this is a temporary solution. KMK stores the catalog in XML-formatted file, which should allow different versions to use one and same catalog saved earlier. But binary catalog file format is considered for speed improvement - the XML implementation used is somehow slow in the presence of lots and lots of data to store.
Because KMK is still in very early development phase, there are a lot of things to be done, and not everything works as expected. So feedback you provide will be greatly appreciated!

SmartTagFix is a simple utility that fills in missing ID3 tags for all MP3s within a directory structure. It uses the file name, directory name, and a bit of "common sense" to guess the correct labels.
Most MP3 players depend on the id3 tag to categorise the song. However when you download music from the internet half the time the tag information is missing, or incomplete. On top of that the files are named in a variaty of different standards, for example:
Massive Attack-Mezzanine/02-Risingson.met
08 - Young Americans - Best of Bowie - David Bowie.mp3
King Afrika-La Bomba.mp3
There are many great MP3 organisers available, which can generate tag data from the file name, however they can only bulk update if your files are named consistantly. For the above case youd have to enter the tag data manually (and Im sure you can think of better ways to spend your free time!)
SmartTagFix uses both the wxWidgets and id3lib open source libraries. Firstly, you will need to download the wxWidgets souce http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wxwindows/wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.gz) and build and install it (you will need the GTK 1.2 development libraries and include files, read the installation instructions included with wxGTK for full details) Then you need to download and install id3lib (http://id3lib.sourceforge.net/), (either build the source or (easier) download the RPM). Check where you installed id3lib.la (by doing $locate id3lib.la). If its not in /usr/local/lib then you will need to modify tagfix/src/makefile.am to point to the correct location
To build the program use:
./configure
make
su
make install
ldconfig
exit
