The High Level Virtual Machine is:
- Based on LLVM (Low Level Virtual Machine). LLVM is HLVMs sister project. HLVM gains tremendous capability from LLVM in the areas of code generation, bytecode storage, runtime execution, etc.
- Aimed at supporting dynamic languages such as Ruby, Python, Perl, Jython, Haskell, Prolog, etc.
- A complete compiler developers toolkit for creating new languages easily. To write a new compiler, language designers simply write a plugin that describes the language to HLVM and how to translate the grammar productions into HLVMs comprehensive Abstract Syntax Tree (AST). After that, HLVM handles all aspects of code generation, bytecode storage, XML translation, JIT execution or interpretation, and native compilation.
- A language interoperability framework. Because all front end compilers generate code in the same AST, they can interoperate. Use of the runtime library for common constructs (e.g. "string") allow even complex data types to be shared between languages. Users of HLVM can write complex programs in multiple languages and be assured the result can be executed efficiently.
- A code management system including code revisioning, interface versioning, automated recompilation, separation of workspaces, etc.

Audiality is a scalable and portable audio engine for music and sound effects. It is intended to play equally well in studios and inside games, in order to serve as a flexible tool for content creation, and for use in the final product.

Audiality uses MIDI files in combination with scripting and modular synthesis, to minimize file sizes and maximise flexibility. It is very portable, and supports both integer and floating point processing modes.

Scalability has been a major priority from the start. The current version will run on very low end Pentium systems, but can also produce high quality audio on more powerful hardware.
The main goal for the future is to extend the scalability of Audiality well into the range of serious home and professional studio use. The idea is to provide total control, a wide range of features, tools for fast and effective creation of original sounds, and excellent audio quality.

Adaptive Quality of Service Architecture (AQuoSA) is an open architecture for the provisioning of adaptive Quality of Service functionality into the Linux kernel. The project features a flexible, portable, lightweight and open architecture for supporting soft real-time applications with facilities related to timing guarantees and QoS, on the top of a general-purpose operating system as Linux.
At the core of the architecture there is an adaptive resource reservation layer that is capable of dynamically adapting the CPU allocation for QoS aware applications based on their run-time requirements.
Timing guarantees are provided through an in-kernel reservation based process scheduler, whose services are exposed to applications through a well-designed API.
A supervisor performs admission control, so that admitting into the system new applications with timing guarantees does not affect the timing guarantees of already admitted applications. Also, it takes care of guaranteeing appropriate security policies in the assignment of timing guarantees to users and user groups, as configured by the system administrator.
A feedback-based QoS control layer may be optionally used by applications who want to keep their timing guarantees by using a CPU allocation that is continuously adapted according to their actual needs. This leaverages the programmer, within certain limits, to hard-code any particular reservation amount within the application, because the best allocation is found out automatically at run-time. Also, this enhances the possibilities for the system to host additional QoS controlled applications. The available control algorithms are well founded on formal scheduling models and control theoretical results.
Enhancements:
- This release introduces a couple of flags useful when creating servers. If QOS_F_PERSISTENT is enabled, a server is allowed to exist beyond detach of the last task. If QOS_F_SOFT is enabled, a server tasks are scheduled by the Linux default scheduler/policy, when outside of the server reservation.
- Also, various stability issues in destroying servers have been fixed, also thanks to a new release of the generic scheduler patch for the Linux kernel (gs-2.2).

SimCList project is a high quality C library for handling lists.
SimCList is available for free, under restrictions imposed by the BSD license.
SimCList API is good because:
- it is simple, yet powerful
- it makes elegant and consistent use of information hiding
- it abstracts the actual data type to store
- it is fairly total
The library itself is very performant and makes a good compromise between performance in terms of time and space:
- insertion is O(n) [typically n/8]
- extraction and deletion are O(n) [typically n/8]
- iteration is O(1)
- sorting is always O(n logn), without worst case
Thread safety
The SimCList library is thread safe, meaning that many threads can run SimCList operators on different lists concurrently without hurt, or also read operations on the same list.
However, of course, no safety guarantee is made for performing concurrently write+write or read+write operations on the same list (eg: insertion, deletion, sorting, ...). For performance and portability reasons, protecting such operations from concurrency is left to the library adopter.
Performance
SimCList has been designed with ease to use and performance in mind. There is some example factors that have been taken into account, and against which the code has been optimized when implementing SimCList:
- overhead of function calls
- cache locality
- number of branches, possible CPU stalls or pipeline flushes
- dynamic memory allocation weight on the OS
- other mathematic/probabilistic optimizations for avoiding worst-case or improving average case behaviours in algorithms
Many parts of SimCLists code have been deeply improved with profiling analysis.
Enhancements:
- Transparent inclusion in C++ applications is natively supported.
- Sentinels are used to improve performance on list traversals.
- A problem was fixed with list_insert_at, which could output inconsistent lists when inserting into even-sized lists in position 0.

KmPg2 is a very simple to use MPEG2 encoding wizard that allows the user to create high quality DVD compatible MPEG2 streams, without requiring any technical knowledge.
Creating high quality MPEG2 streams involves a lot more than simply feeding the input video to mpeg2enc/transcode/mencoder/etc.
The input video needs to be carefully prepared by pulling it through a chain of stream processing tools like low-pass filters, color correction filters, static and dynamic chroma and luma noise filters, scalers, and so on.
This processing chain needs to be tuned in such a way that all irrelevant data (like noise) is removed before the video enters the encoder. KmPg2 uses the video processing / encoding tools from the MJPEGTools project to achieve this.
KmPg2 features a profiler that enables the user to interactively create custom pre-processing pipelines that are optimised for a specific type of video material. These preprocessing pipelines (profiles) can be stored and used with the actual encoding wizard.
For example, you could create a profile that is designed especially for restoring a single aging VHS tape, or you could create a profile tuned for your digital camcorder and re-use it for every new recording that needs to be encoded.
At this moment KmPg2 accepts only one format of input video: Raw Sony DV video streams. This is the video format that most people use nowadays for high quality video processing and editing. Support for using AVI files for input is expected in future versions.

To build Cirkuit you need the KDE4 and Qt4 dev packages. To install them on Debian-based systems, type

libwayne is a library of reasonably abstract datatypes and algorithms written in C.

The algorithms in libwayne are by no means original. Many of them are taken verbatim from textbooks on data structures and algorithms, and I simply translated them into C. They include efficient and correct routines for priority queues, event-driven simulations, queues, stacks, binary trees, sets of integers, graphs (the node-edge kind), some combinatorics routines, ODE integration routines, a simple statistics package, and a matrix-vector library.

Many of the routines (heap, stack, queue, bintree) can work with arbitrary objects, not just integers. Comparisons are done with pointers to comparison functions, similar to ANSI Cs standard qsort. This library is not meant to be complete; I write the routines as I need them, but only high-quality code goes into libwayne.

One thing that many people ask me is ``why didnt you use C++? Without going into a long tirade, suffice it to say that, although I am not a C++ expert (actually, the only stuff I havent learned in intimate detail is templates), I know enough C++ to realize that it is not the be-all, end-all of programming languages. In fact, after several years of C++ being around, it is already beginning a slow fading into history, with Java being its successor --- and not a very good one, at that.

At the risk of sounding like the 40-50 year olds out there who still insist that FORTRAN is a good enough language for everything, Ill be a 30-something who insists that, until something better comes along, C is still a good all-purpose language in which to write heavy, data-structure intensive programs. I believe it was Dennis Ritchie who said something like, "C is rarely the best language for a given task, but its often the second-best," the implication being that its better to learn one language that is second-best for everything, than to learn a new language for every programming task. (One could say the same of English.)

I started libwayne when I realized that I was constantly re-writing little bits of code that did important things that should be in the C standard, but are not. For example, how many times have you written code like this:

I got sick of it. Furthermore, I often wanted to know more about why my program failed. So I wrote Fatal. Heres its prototype:
void Fatal(char *fmt, ...); /* generates an assertion failure */

It uses varargs so you can pass it an arbitrary list of output arguments just like printf, but it generates an assertion failure so that if you run it under a debugger, you can look at the program nicely as it dies. It turned out to be only the first function I wrote for libwayne, and it was put into a file called "misc.c" which I started including in most of the code I wrote. Another early member of the library was Malloc, which calls Fatal if the standard malloc fails.

Eventually "misc.c" started getting pretty big, with macros for MIN, MAX, ABS, SQR, etc, so I created misc.h and compiled misc.c into an object module. That was about 1993.

About that time I started to realize that, at least in C, we need a way to pass "objects" around in a reasonably transparent way, but sometimes we want to treat pointers as integers. This makes some peoples teeth sweat (my own included), so I invented the voint datatype, which is (you guessed it) a union of (void*) and (int).

Then I started adding more complex algorithms to libwayne, whenever I needed them. Each and every piece of libwayne was written because I needed it, but only things that I took careful time to do well went into libwayne. Any algorithm that needs to compare objects needs a comparison function like the one used by the ANSI standard qsort routine.
