Apache Harmony

Apache Harmony is the Java SE project of the Apache Software Foundation. more>>
Apache Harmony is the Java SE project of the Apache Software Foundation. Please help us make this a world class, certified implementation of the Java Platform Standard Edition!

Apache Harmonys aim is to produce a large and healthy community of those interested in runtime platforms tasked with creation of :

A compatible, independent implementation of the Java SE 5 JDK under the Apache License v2.
A community-developed modular runtime (VM and class library) architecture.

We aim to support wide range of different platforms. The main criteria for whether a particular platform is supported or not is the involvement of people in running tests on regular base, reporting build status, finding and fixing bugs for that platform, and so on. We have a list of platforms we are actively maintaining at the moment.

Project Status

JRE and HDK snapshots available
JRE can run popular programs like Apache Tomcat, Eclipse, Maven, Derby, Ant
More than 95% of Java 5 API complete. (not compatible, just completed)

arm0nia 0.2

arm0nia 0.2

arm0nia is a modular desktop environment. more>>
arm0nia (harmony) is a group of projects that intend to create software for making UNIX and UNIX like operating systems, more powerfull and friendly. Our first goal is to create a Dynamic Modular Desktop Environment.

Installation

1. pm.conf

The PM needs to known on which directory it is installed.

1.1. Copy the pack/pm.conf to /etc
1.2. Fix the directory variable pmdir of the pm.conf with the correct path.

Example:

If the daemon is located in directory /opt/pm/
Make sure, that the following line is exist in /etc/pm.conf

pmdir=/opt/pm

2. LD_LIBRARY_PATH

We must update ldconfigs path to check our libraries and modules. That can be done with several ways.

Note: in the following examples, I suppose that PM is located on /opt/pm

2.a. The best is to update the /etc/ld.so.conf

Open that file and append two new paths.
If our PMs directory is the /opt/pm add the following lines

/opt/pm/lib
/opt/pm/plugins

Save the file and update the cache by running ldconfig without parameters

2.b. Another way is to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH at the system startup.

2.b.1. on bash

Open the /etc/profile and append the following lines.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/pm/lib:/opt/pm/plugins export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

2.b.2. on tcsh

Open the /etc/csh.cshrc and append the following line.

setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /opt/pm/lib:/opt/pm/plugins

Finally do a reboot (you can avoid it, but if you known how, then you dont need to read my doc).

2.c. Another way is to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH at the shells login script.

The shells login scripts are for bash: ~/.profile for tcsh: ~/.login

You must append the same text as for 2.b case

2.d. Of course, you can do it manually from CLI, but if you are new, use the 2.b case

3. make

Suppose that PM is located on /opt/pm

Use make on

/opt/pm to create daemon and libraries

/opt/pm/plugins to create the plugins

/opt/pm/apps to create the applications

4. run

Run pmd on a virtual-console and try the application on another.

abcpp 1.3.2

abcpp 1.3.2

abcpp is a simple yet powerful preprocessor designed for, but not limited to, ABC music files. more>>
abcpp is a simple yet powerful preprocessor designed for, but not limited to, ABC music files. One of my hobbies is music: I play flute, recorder, whistle and clarinet, and I sing as a tenor in a choir. I find that the ABC music notation language is a wonderful tool to typeset sheet music. ABC is one of the best designed, easy to use, well-thought out, and nicely implemented notation formats Ive ever seen: IMHO, it surpasses other good notation languages like GNU Lilypond or MusiXTeX. (Philips Music Writer is a serious contender though.) You can write music in a very simple ASCII format and convert it to MIDI, or typeset it to make professional-looking scores.

The only serious problem with ABC is that it was originally designed for melody, not for harmony. In simple words, this means that you can only write music for a single instrument or voice. This is an example of what ABC can do; it sounds like this. Although it works beautifully for simple tunes and folk music, it can be not enough for Western classical music.

Some ABC applications implement unofficial extensions to the ABC language that make it possible to write polyphonic music. The purpose of the ABC Plus project is to provide software and documentation for this extended ABC. Here is an example of classical music written in ABC Plus; it sounds like this.

All RPMs available from this site were built on a Mandriva 2006 GNU/Linux machine.

netBeep 0.2.0

netBeep 0.2.0

netBeep project is a program that makes networkable computer music with a PCs speakers. more>>
netBeep project is a program that makes networkable computer music with a PCs speakers.
netBeep is a collection of Perl scripts that enable you to make music using only your computers internal speaker. It was designed to work over networks, allowing you to use many computers to play the music -- each one playing a certain part.
This means that a whole orchestra of computers can be created, and it allows for chords and harmonies. You can, of course, use a standalone computer if you wish.
A script is included that converts Nokia-style ring tones to netBeep music files (scores). There is a Vim syntax-highlighting file that should help you out when writing your own scores.
An extensive user manual and reference guide are included.
Main features:
- It is easy to write your own scores due to the simple, yet flexible, music language (and its documentation).
- A syntax-highlighting file for Vim that helps you write your own scores is provided. (The manual explains how to install it.)
- A comprehensive and easy-to-read user manual and reference guide has been written and is available in multiple formats.
Enhancements:
- Added EXAMPLES section to man page. It explains that there are a lot of examples included with netBeep, what theyre there for and how to access them.
- Craig and I Completely re-wrote the build system using Makefiles. This has made maintainance and installation much easier.

Strasheela 0.8.3

Strasheela 0.8.3

Strasheela is a highly expressive constraint-based music composition system. more>>
Strasheela is a highly expressive constraint-based music composition system. The Strasheela user declaratively states a music theory and the computer generates music which complies with this theory.
A theory is formulated as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) by a set of rules (constraints) applied to a music representation in which some aspects are expressed by variables (unknowns).
Music constraint programming is style-independent and is well-suited for highly complex theories (e.g. a fully-fledged theory of harmony). The results can be output into various formats including MIDI, Lilypond, and Csound.
Enhancements:
- This release greatly extends the available documentation.
- It now comes with a tutorial (draft) and includes several examples with musical output, an explanation of their underlying music theory, remarks on their implementation, and the full source code.
- Substantial background information on Strasheela is given by a monograph.
- Also, many additions and bugfixes have been made to the system.
