Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats. more>>
Partition Image application is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats (see below) to an image file.
The image file can be compressed in the GZIP/BZIP2 formats to save disk space, and split into multiple files to be copied on removable floppies (ZIP for example); partitions can be saved across the network since version 0.6.0.
Partition Image will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file.
This is unlike the dd command, which also copies empty blocks. Partition Image also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB.
This is very useful to save partitions to an image in some cases:
- First you can restore your linux partition if there is a problem (virus, file system errors, manipulation error) . When you have a problem, you just have to restore the partition, and after 10 minutes, you have the original partition. You can write the image to a CD-R if you dont want the image to use hard-disk space.
- This utility can be used to install many identical PCs. For example, if you buy 50 PCs, with the same hardware, and you want to install the same linux systems on all 50 PCs, you will save a lot of time. Indeed, you just have to install on the first PC and create an image from it. For the 49 others, you can use the image file and Partition Images restore function.

The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems. more>>
The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.

The suite of smartmontools contains two utilities:

smartctl is a command line utility designed to perform S.M.A.R.T. tasks such as disk self-checks, and to report the S.M.A.R.T. status of the disk.

smartd is a daemon that periodically monitors S.M.A.R.T. status and reports errors and changes in S.M.A.R.T. attributes to syslog.

ScramDisk 1.0.2

ScramDisk 1.0.2

ScramDisk is a suite of Linux tools and a graphical user interface (GUI) which allow the creation and access to ScramDisks. more>>
ScramDisk for Linux (SD4L) is a suite of Linux tools and a graphical user interface (GUI) which allow the creation of, and access to ScramDisk encrypted container files. In particular, SD4L provides a Linux driver which enables mounting ScramDisk containers.
ScramDisk for Linux also encrypts partitions on a hard disk or storage media such as USB sticks or floppy disks entirely as devices. Version 1.0, moreover, supports TrueCrypt containers.
Enhancements:
- Fix for a bug in mounting ext3 file systems (Tracker 1746730). Check mounting ext3 before ext2 if mount option auto was chosen.
- Fix for a bug in case of file system mount failure (Tracker 1750002). Immediately unmount if mounting the file system failed.
- User access rights on block device containers are no longer checked before mounting because this commonly prevents normal users from mounting such containers (Tracker 1750005).

FDMS-3 Ripper

FDMS-3 Ripper

FDMS-3 Ripper is a Perl program for extracting the tracks from the FDMS-3 filesystem. more>>
FDMS-3 Ripper is a Perl program for extracting the tracks from the FDMS-3 filesystem. I recently bought a Fostex FD-8 multitrack hard disk recorder for recording music. It works great, but I was disappointed to discover that, although it uses a standard external SCSI hard disk, there was no way to "rip" the recorded tracks from the hard drive to my PC over the SCSI port. The alternatives were to use the analog-out to re-record each track using my soundcard (resulting in loss of quality and loss of synch between tracks), or buying a $500 ADAT card for my PC.

I decided that I would try to figure out a way to rip the music directly over the SCSI port. The FD-8 uses a proprietary Fostex filesystem, FDMS-3. I decided to hook it up to my PC and probed the drive. I was able to figure out the basic layout of the filesystem pretty quickly. Note: this is designed to hard disks formatted in the FDMS-3 "Mastering" mode, which stores the audio data in uncompressed format.

In order to use the program, you will need to take the hard disk that has the FDMS-3 filesystem on it and hook it up to your PC (mine is a SCSI drive -- dont know if this will work with one of the internal IDE drives you can hook up to the FD-8). Make sure that Linux can see the drive (dont try to mount it, though!). You might want to have a look at SCSI-2.4-HOWTO to get the drive recognized. My external hard disk is located at "/dev/sda", but yours could end up elsewhere.

Next, you need to make sure you have the following on your system: perl, sox and fileutils (for the "dd" utility). Security Warning Unfortunately, this program presents significant security issues, so be careful with it. The script needs to be able to access the hard disk directly, so you can either run it as root (not safe), or change the permissons for the hard disk device (in my case, "/dev/sda"). Run the program with "./fdms3rip /dev/sda" (substituting the actual location of your hard disk).

This will list all of the programs present on the hard disk. Then, run it again with the number of the program you want to fetch off the hard disk: "./fdms3rip /dev/sda 5" to get all of the recorded tracks for program number 5. After waiting a bit, you should now have a bunch of WAV files on your Linux machine. Warning This program will create and erase files with the names "dir" and "header" in the directory it is run from. It would be best to run this program from a clean directory, just to make sure there are no problems.

Yard 2.2

Yard 2.2

Yard is a suite of Perl scripts for creating rescue disks (also called bootdisks) for Linux. more>>
Yard is a suite of Perl scripts for creating rescue disks (also called bootdisks) for Linux. A rescue disk is a self-contained Linux kernel and filesystem on a floppy diskette, usually used when you cant (or dont want to) boot off your hard disk.
A rescue disk usually contains utilities for diagnosing and manipulating hard disks and filesystems.
Main features:
- Builds rescue disk from a list of file specifications.
- File specs allow absolute and relative filenames, symbolic links, file replacements and full shell-style globbing.
- Automatically determines necessary libraries and loaders.
- Allows stripping of binaries and libraries during copying.
- Automatically regenerates ld.so.cache
- Checks for broken symlinks
- Checks /etc/{fstab,inittab,termcap} for common errors and inconsistencies.
- Checks user directories and files mentioned in /etc/passwd
- Checks command files (eg, rc.local and .login) for missing binaries and command interpreters.
- Provides information on library usage.
- Checks NSS and PAM configuration.
- Automatically performs filesystem compression and copying.
- Can be used with or without LILO.
- Can make single or double disk rescue sets.
- Extensive checking of user choices and execution errors.

GNU Parted 1.8.8

GNU Parted 1.8.8

GNU Parted is a partition editor, for creating, destroying, resizing and copying partitions. more>>
GNU Parted is a program for creating, resizing, destroying, checking and copying partitions, and the file systems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising disk usage, copying data between hard disks and disk imaging.
Supported disk labels: raw access (useful for RAID and LVM), MS-DOS partition tables, Intel GPT partition tables, MIPS partition tables, PC98 partition tables, Sun and BSD disk labels and Macintosh partition maps.
Notes:
- For ext2, ext3 and reiserfs: the start of the partition must stay fixed.
- For ext2, ext3: the partition you copy to must be bigger or exactly the same size as the partition you copy from.
- For ext2 and ext3: the checking is limited to ensuring the resize and copy commands will be ok.
- For fat: the size of the new partition after resizing or copying is restricted by the cluster size. Parted can shrink the cluster size, so you can always shrink your partition. However, if you cant use FAT32 for some reason, you may not be able to grow your partition.
- Parted supports both FAT16 and FAT32. Parted can convert file systems between FAT16 and FAT32, if necessary.
- Reiserfs support is enabled if you install libreiserfs.
