GuiTuner 0.05 beta2

GuiTuner 0.05 beta2

GuiTuner is a simple guitar tuning program for Linux. more>>
GuiTuner tries to detect the pitch of the sound recorded in real time from the audio device using some methods ( by now only based on FFT ) that you can configure at runtime.
It is self-explanatory, you just have to connect your guitar or your microphone to the sound card, configure the input device using a mixer and see what the program tells you: it displays the note nearest to the picked sound and the interval between it and the note produced by the instrument.
If the sound produced is lower than the right one the left arrow becomes green, if is higher becomes green the right arrow. From version 0.05beta1 is available a simple tone generation section, that uses presets.
There are a "stable" and an "unstable" version, both may not work properly, but the "stable" one has been tested for a year, so its problems are more or less known. Download the unstable version only if you want to test it and help with its development, reporting bugs and problems.
Enhancements:
- Added Alsa support and simple tone playing, with preset support.

GuitarTeX is a tool for guitarists who want to print good looking and easy to play song sheets. more>>
GuitarTeX is a tool for guitarists who want to print good looking and easy to play song sheets or song books from their chord or chordpro files. It uses the well known chord format with several extensions. The program was developed on a Linux system, but it should run on any other Unix system which has a Perl/TK environment.
It is based upon an idea of Martin Leclerc and Mario Dorion from Canada and their program Chord (Version 3.5 from 1993). To use GuitarTeX, you need to have knowledge of the Chord program (explained later). Though the LaTeX text processing system is used by GuitarTeX, you dont have to know very much about it. GuitarTeX produces Postscript or PDF output automatically (if you want). The Chord directives supplied by GuitarTeX are described in Chapter 5.
Main features:
- Graphical user interface with integrated editor and syntax highlighting
- Prints good looking song sheets including guitar chords without using monospace fonts
- Output formats: LaTeX, Postscript and PDF
- Compatible with ChordPro format, import function for ascii format
- Support for music typesetting with the LaTeX packages MusixTeX, MusixLyr and TabDefs
- Flexible page layout (paper size, margins...)

- Optional printing of chord symbols at the end of a song
- Transpose up or down your song by mouse clicks
- Creates single song sheets or complete song books with a title page, table of
- contents, headlines with page numbering, chord table and index
- Supports ASCII tablature and the built in tablature directives for guitar and bass tabs
- Support for multiple languages (if you dont find your langauage, you can help the
- author to add it)
- Runs on Linux operating system (it should run on any Unix system that is supported by Perl/TK and LaTeX, but it is not tested)
- Setup your song book project from single song files with the include directive
- LaTeX commands may be used in Chordpro files (for the professionals)
Enhancements:
- Support to create song books
- Several Bugfixes

Live Loops 1.0

Live Loops 1.0

Live Loops is a audio looping software for live music production. more>>
Live Loops is a audio looping software for live music production. You need to have allegro library installed to compile/run this:
Download the latest Work in Progress version from here: http://sunsite.dk/allegro/wip.html

NOTICE: This program wont run unless you create a sub-directory where you are executing it called samples with all of your samples in it (wav format).

This program will attempt to run in a window. If that fails it will attempt to use framebuffer (under linux).

Essentially i wrote this for my own purposes and i wanted a very simple way of putting loops together, and outputting them through existing soundcard hardware into an external mixer.

To do in the following versions:

1) put in some code to send a pulse to the parallel port to control the timing of my Commodore64 computer (running custom music software found on this server in /dev/aSid/current/) This functionality was present in v0.1 before I ported to linux.

2) Put in some audio-input functionality so that a user could record a bar of say, guitar, and that bar would be looped over whilst they played other stuff over the top. Nice for making very live sounding looped music. Sort of like a delay pedal.

FFT Spectra 1.3

FFT Spectra 1.3

FFT Spectra is a tool for the visualization of frequency spectra of an audio signal. more>>
FFT Spectra is a tool for the visualization of frequency spectra of an audio signal.

Among other things, it can be used to verify whether you are able to sing and whistle in tune or to tune your guitar.

Examples:

Didgeridoo

Didgeridoo is actually the reason, why i started writing this software. The theory of physics explains that when you blow into a cylindrical tube (such as didgeridoo, but PVC pipe works as well) and vibrate your lips, standing waves develop inside the tube.

At that end of the tube, where the air leaves, there is nearly atmospheric pressure and the standing wave has a node there. At the other end, where one blows the air in, the changes in pressure are maximal and the standing wave must have an antinode here.

The situation is depicted on the picture on the right: The horizontal axis represents a position along the tube and the vertical axis represents a maximal pressure variation from the constant atmospheric pressure. The black vertical line represents a zero variation. The left black point is the mouth-side enpoint of the tube. The pressure variation are maximal here. The black point on the right is the open side od the tube - the pressure is constant here.

This node/antinode restriction permits only standing waves with appropriate wavelength (e.g. frequency) to be developed. Other frequencies are forbidden. So, the red curve is a minimal (fundamental) frequency, which is present in the didgeridoo sound. (Corresponds to 70Hz on the picture bellow).

If we squeezed the red curve twice, i.e. made the frequency twice as high, on both end-points there would be an antinode and the node/antinode constrain would not be fulfilled. Really, we see that the peak at 140Hz bellow almost disappears. If we squeeze the curve a little bit more to obtain the green curve, the boundary condition is again met and the peak at 210Hz is clearly visible bellow. And so on.
