Genius 0.7.7

Genius 0.7.7

Genius is a calculator program similiar in some aspects to BC, Matlab or Maple. more>>
Genius project is a calculator program similiar in some aspects to BC, Matlab or Maple. GEL is the name of its extention language (stands for "Genius Extension Language", clever huh?), in fact, a large part of the standard genius functions are written in GEL itself.
Main features:
- Arbitrary precision ints, multiple precision floats, using all the power of gmp.
- Rational numbers, stored as quotient and denominator.
- Complex numbers, stored in cartesian coordinates as usual.
- Automatic typing, no need to declare types of variables.
- Math-like-looking expressions, tries to be as much a what you mean is what Genius understands, up to a limit of course.
- Matrix calculations, with many related functions.
- Modular arithmetic, including inversions and modular arithmetic on matrices.
- A complete programming language. In fact large part of Genius standard library is written in GEL.
- Can output matrices in LaTeX, Troff (eqn) or MathML, this is I think a very cool feature that allows you to copy stuff directly from the Genius console to a document in LaTeX, troff or MathML. I in fact use this even to just enter matrices into LaTeX documents to begin with.
- 2D Function line plots, standard 2D graphs of up to 10 functions at once, with possibility to export to EPS or PNG
- 3D Function surface plots, with possibility to export to EPS or PNG
- GUI IDE where you can edit and run/test your programs
- A plugin interface, not yet really used.

Memchan 2.2a4

Memchan 2.2a4

Memchan is an extension library to the script language Tcl, as created by John Ousterhout. more>>
Memchan is an extension library to the script language Tcl, as created by John Ousterhout. Memchan provides several new channel types for in-memory channels and the appropriate commands for their creation.
They are useful to transfer large amounts of data between procedures or interpreters, and additionally provide an easy interface to on-the-fly generation of code or data too. No need to [set] or [append] to a string, just do a simple [puts].
Enhancements:
tools/mpexpand
- Added new tool. Linux/ix86 starpack containing a doctools processor.
tools/nroff_regen
- Rewritten to use mpexpand for most
tools/manpage_regen
- conversions. The conversion to HTML
tools/rules/manpage.html.site
- for the website still relies on the old expand system. Writing a good formatting engine for that, even if derived from the doctools HTML engine takes more time than I want to invest right now. Rewriting the rules file instead. That was less work.
doc/fifo.man
- The original contents were written
doc/fifo2.man
- in a precursor format to doctools.
doc/memchan.man
- Now rewritten to conform to the
doc/null.man
- doctools specification.
doc/random.man

The UNIX Man Slak Paks 0.5

The UNIX Man Slak Paks 0.5

The UNIX Man Slak Paks is a Slackware package creation framework. more>>
This is a collection of scripts which is used to manage the creation of Slackware packages. This framework is designed to make it easy to add packages to the collection and to easily tweak package parameters for testing and deployment.
The framework currently has a lot of parameters, and also has basic frameworks for CPAN packages. It is possible to add more frameworks and tweaks for other package networks as well, such as the PHP and Python archives, and these are in the works currently.
Enhancements:
- This marks the start of the new style of build scripts. These are much more modular, and have a consistent set of shell functions and variables which work in their defaults for most situations, and can be redefined by a package file to do special setup or other functions
- which some packages may require.

Sman 0.99

Sman 0.99

Sman is the Searcher for Man pages. more>>
Sman is the Searcher for Man pages. Based on the example of the same name in Josh Rabinowitzs article "How To Index Anything" in the July, 2003 issue of Linux Journal (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6652), sman is an enhanced version of apropos and man -k. Sman project adds several key abilities over its predecessors:
- Supports complex natural language text searches such as "(linux and kernel) or (mach and microkernel)"
- Shows results in a ranked order, and optionally an extract (using -e) of the manpage showing the searched text highlighted
- Allows for searches by manpage section, title, body, or filename (use metaname=searchword)
- Indexes the complete contents of the man page, not just the title and description
- Uses a prebuilt index to perform fast searches
- Performs stemming so that a search for "searches" will match a document with the word "searching"

encrypt 0.9

encrypt 0.9

encrypt turns any plaintext word into an encrypted string in a variety of ways, including reading a random word from a file. more>>
encrypt turns any plaintext word into an encrypted string in a variety of ways, including reading a random word from a file. It can be useful for creating passwords for .htpasswd files for webservers. Its also very useful for generating random passwords out of a cronjob.

The program has also and a man page.

But most people will use it like this:
encrypt -s dZ mypassword
dZVuMBk8/bQsk
mypassword
Or you can have it generate a random password for you:
encrypt -r 8
lHtmBvBVUSWt2
WjM0GUf
Check out the man page man encrypt for more information and examples.

Any user will be able to use encrypt in their own userspace. You can also run make install as root and it will put the program, man page and config file in the locations specified in the Makefile. You may want to run make test first to make sure you have everything that is needed to run the program first.

mkcdtoc is a small and flexible command line utility to create TOC files for cdrdao. more>>
mkcdtoc is a small and flexible command line utility to create TOC files for cdrdao. mkcdtoc project reads a list of audio files and outputs a TOC file with a track specification for each audio file.
Input data can be a raw list with one file name on each line, or an m3u play list. The program has a modular architecture and can be extended via plugins.
The distribution includes a few plugins that can retrieve meta information from audio files to fill CD-TEXT blocks in the generated TOC file. There are plugins to perform audio file to WAVE format conversion.
To install mkcdtoc type:
# tar xjf mkcdtoc-VERSION.tar.bz2
# cd mkcdtoc-VERSION
# make install
This will install executable to /usr/local/bin, man page to /usr/local/man/man1 and plugins to /usr/local/share/mkcdtoc/plugins. You can change the installation prefix by editing include.mak.
vim:tw=70
Enhancements:
- New plugins info-ogginfo and info-translit-cyr.
- New options to disable arbitrary CD-TEXT flags.
- Minor improvements and bugfixes.

C++ Machine Objects 0.9.4

C++ Machine Objects 0.9.4

C++ Machine Objects class library supports a subset of the UML statechart notation. more>>
C++ Machine Objects class library supports a subset of the UML statechart notation for implementing hierarchical state machines in straight C++, similar in spirit to the GoF "State" design pattern.
The currently supported features are hierarchical states, entry and exit actions, state histories, and state variables.
Installation:
The class library as such does not need to be installed. Just include the header file Macho.hpp to make use of it. Prerequisite however is a C++ compiler with sane support for templates.
Included are the example state machines HelloWorld, Example, Microwave and Test. To make the examples run just compile them in the directory they are in, for example:
# GCC
g++ -o microwave Microwave.cpp
# MSVC7
cl /EHsc Microwave.cpp
I like the GoF "State" design pattern. It enables implementing the important concept of state machines with common programming language features. By utilising only basic language mechanisms it is easy to apply in real-life software development.
Another important property that stems from this simplicity is orthogonality, meaning that the pattern can be combined with other design elements, patterns and idioms in arbitrary ways.
In contrast stand the tool supported approaches to state machine creation (of which there is no shortage). Based on code generators and graphical editors, they tend to generate incomprehensible code and forfeit orthogonality by necessarily being outside the domain of the programming language.
Unfortunately the "State" pattern is limited in scope because it does not allow for hierarchical state machines. This is regrettable because flat state machines tend to become unwieldy when getting bigger, for the sheer number of states they produce.
Hierarchical state machines as defined by the statechart notation alleviate this problem by giving an additional structural element through grouping states into hierarchies.
The "State" pattern in its original form is not capable of modeling state hierarchies. The Macho class library extends the concept with this possibility, while keeping the properties of simplicity (there possible) and tool independence from its inspiration.
Enhancements:
- This release adds the feature of backtracking to previous states by using "Snapshots".

Laughing Man Factorial 0.1

Laughing Man Factorial 0.1

Laughing Man Factorial is the paranormal evil twin of Laughing Man. more>>
Laughing Man Factorial is the paranormal evil twin of Laughing Man. Factorial also has an unexplained superiority complex, almost exponential you might say, over the original Laughing Man which we will hence forth refer to as Junior for appeasement of currently unwarranted hoity-toity.
Like Junior it is an application for monitoring webpage changes, however it does so using the Objective-C/Cocoa framework as opposed to Java, and leverages Core Data, bindings, and value transformers to produce a smaller code footprint. Less fluff and more meat I say, more meat and less fluff.
Factorial is in a experimental state, it is not recommended that current users of Junior switch completely to this version. You can safely import your data and tinker with Factorial, but it is recommended that any data that you want to remain consistent, be done through old stable Junior.
Factorial may not be forgiving on data when upgrading from one version to the next for the next several releases, hence the adjectives paranormal and evil in the preface.
Junior Equivalent functionality
Splitbar position saved on shutdown
Categories display like junior
New Features
Drag and drop funtionality greatly enhanced
supports dragging to and from Safari and OmniWeb
Change log embedded into application and available through menu.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes several bugs, and provides several feature enhancements, bringing the Factorial branch almost up to par with the original Laughing Man.
- Most notably, a nasty Java to Objective-C, Date to NSDate porting bug in the beta was fixed.
- The beta was usable, but users had to wait a little under 3 years for each site refresh.
- This issue has been fixed in 0.1, but you must reset your data if you used the beta.
