GDB 6.6
GDB is the GNU debugger. more>>
GDB, the GNU Project debugger, allows you to see what is going on `inside another program while it executes or what another program was doing at the moment it crashed.
GDB can do four main kinds of things (plus other things in support of these) to help you catch bugs in the act:
- Start your program, specifying anything that might affect its behavior.
- Make your program stop on specified conditions.
- Examine what has happened, when your program has stopped.
- Change things in your program, so you can experiment with correcting the effects of one bug and go on to learn about another.
The program being debugged can be written in C, C++, Pascal, Objective-C (and many other languages). Those programs might be executing on the same machine as GDB (native) or on another machine (remote). GDB can run on most popular UNIX and Microsoft Windows variants.

cgdb 0.6.4
cgdb is a lightweight, but fully functional curses frontend to gdb. more>>
CGDB is a curses-based interface to the GNU Debugger (GDB). cgdbs goal is to be lightweight and responsive; not encumbered with unnecessary features.
The interface is designed to deliver the familiar GDB text interface, with a split screen showing the source as it executes. The UI is modeled on the classic Unix text editor, vi. Those familiar with vi should feel right at home using CGDB.
The library responsible for communicating with GDB is called Trivial GDB (tgdb, or more accurately, libtgdb). This abstraction allows the UI code to be independent of the debugger, as well as greatly simplifying its implementation.
Those wanting to develop other interfaces to GDB are welcome to use libtgdb as the basis for their program. Many of the headaches of parsing GDBs output and annotations can be avoided by using it.
Main features:
- Syntax-highlighted source window
- Visual breakpoint setting
- Keyboard shortcuts for common functions
- Searching source window (using regexp)
Installation
CGDB could not have been written without the use of other libraries. CGDB depends on
1. CGDB depends on readline-development-4.2 or greater.
If you dont have this, you might get a link error that looks something like this, undefined symbol, rl_set_prompt.
2. CGDB depends on ncurses/curses.
The version number is not known. I have used libncurses.so.5 successfully.
3. If you decide to modify the tokenizer library or the config file module, you will need to have flex installed.
I have used flex 2.5.4 to build cgdb.
4. CGDB uses autoconf/automake to build its configure scripts and makefiles. So, if you change any of the autoconf/automake files, you will need this software installed.
- aclocal (GNU automake) 1.7
- autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.57
- libtool (GNU libtool) 1.4.3
- m4 (GNU m4) 1.4

Devel::GDB 2.0
Devel::GDB is a Perl module to open and communicate a gdb session. more>>
Devel::GDB is a Perl module to open and communicate a gdb session.
SYNOPSIS
use Devel::GDB;
$gdb = new Devel::GDB();
print $gdb->send_cmd(-environment-path);
print $gdb->get(info functions);
The old get syntax (of Devel::GDB-1.23) has been deprecated and will not be supported in future versions. See the documentation of the get function for an explanation of why.
If you really want to use the old syntax, set $Devel::GDB::DEPRECATED to true:
use Devel::GDB ;
$Devel::GDB::DEPRECATED = 1;
$gdb = new Devel::GDB();
print $gdb->get(info functions, $timeout, $prompt, $notyet, $alldone);
The Devel::GDB package provides an interface for communicating with GDB. Internally, it uses the GDB/MI interpreter (see http://sourceware.org/gdb/current/onlinedocs/gdb_25.html), which accurately informs the caller of the program state and, through the use of tokens, guarantees that the results returned actually correspond to the request sent. By contrast, GDBs console interpreter returns all responses on STDOUT, and thus there is no way to ensure that a particular response corresponds to a particular request.
Therefore, it is obviously preferable to use GDB/MI when programmatically interacting with GDB. This can be done via the send_cmd family of functions (send_cmd, send_cmd_excl, and send_cmd_async). There are, however, some cases when there is no GDB/MI command corresponding to a particular console command, or it has not yet been implemented (for example, -symbol-type, corresponding to the console command ptype, is not yet implemented as of GDB 6.6). In this case, the get function provides a workaround by capturing all output sent to the console stream.

Devel::GDB::Reflect 0.2
Devel::GDB::Reflect is a reflection API for GDB/C++. more>>
Devel::GDB::Reflect is a reflection API for GDB/C++.
SYNOPSIS
use Devel::GDB;
use Devel::GDB::Reflect;
my $gdb = new Devel::GDB( -file => $foo );
my $reflector = new Devel::GDB::Reflect( $gdb );
print $gdb->get( "b foo.c:123" );
$gdb->print( "myVariable" );
Devel::GDB::Reflect provides a reflection API for GDB/C++, which can be used to recursively print the contents of STL data structures (vector, set, map, etc.) within a GDB session. It is not limited to STL, however; you can write your own delegates for printing custom container types.
The module implements the functionality used by the gdb++ script, which serves as a wrapper around GDB. You should probably familiarize yourself with the basic functionality of this script first, before diving into the gory details presented here.
Global Variables
The following global variables control the behavior of the "print" method.
$Devel::GDB::Reflect::INDENT
The number of spaces to indent at each level of recursion. Defaults to 4.
$Devel::GDB::Reflect::MAX_DEPTH
The maximum recursion depth. Defaults to 5.
$Devel::GDB::Reflect::MAX_WIDTH
The maximum number of elements to show from a given container. Defaults to 10.

RefDbg 1.2
RefDbg is a GObject reference count debugger. more>>
RefDbg project is a GObject reference count debugger GObject is part of the glib library (not to be confused with glibc) which forms the basis of GTK+ (the Gimp ToolKit), Gnome, GStreamer and many other projects. The GObject library adds object oriented stuff to C which by itself lacks object oriented features.
Since C lacks garbage collection, a reference counting system is used. Each object has a count of how many other references (pointers) there are to it. Reference count bugs can be very hard to track down and can lead to crashes and memory leaks. Refdbg is a tool that can be used interactively with GDB to log, display and break on reference count activity, thereby making this task easier.

kdbg 2.0.5
kdbg is a graphical KDE front end to the GDB debugger. more>>
KDbg is a graphical user interface to gdb, the GNU debugger. kdbg project provides an intuitive interface for setting breakpoints, inspecting variables, and stepping through code.
KDbg requires KDE, the K Desktop Environment, but you can of course debug any program.
Main features:
- Inspection of variable values in a tree structure.
- Direct member: For certain compound data types the most important member values are displayed next to the variable name, so that it is not necessary to expand the subtree of that variable in order to see the member value. For example, you dont need to go into a variable of type QString if you want to see the string that the variable holds. (BTW, this is of course not hardcoded, but can be extended to new types.) KDbg can also display Qt 3s QString values, which are Unicode strings.
- Debugger at your finger tips: The basic debugger functions (step, next, run, finish, until, set/clear/enable/disable breakpoint) are bound to function keys F5 through F10. Quick and easy.
- Of course, lots of other basic functions: View source code, search text, set program arguments and environment variables, display arbitrary expressions. Everything you need to debug a program, eh!
- Debugging of core dumps, attaching to running processes is possible.
- Conditional breakpoints.
Enhancements:
- The appearance of the main window for first-time users was improved.
- Improve file handling when the srcdir != builddir.
- Show value popups for members of this.
- Allow the user to give redirections in the Program Arguments dialog.
- Minor bug fixes.

Valgrind 3.2.3
Valgrind is an award-winning suite of tools for debugging and profiling Linux programs. more>>
Valgrind is an award-winning suite of tools for debugging and profiling Linux programs. With the tools that come with Valgrind, you can automatically detect many memory management and threading bugs, avoiding hours of frustrating bug-hunting, making your programs more stable. You can also perform detailed profiling, to speed up and reduce memory use of your programs.
Valgrind distribution currently includes three tools: a memory error detectors, a cache (time) profiler and a heap (space) profiler.
Valgrind is Open Source / Free Software, and is freely available under the GNU General Public License.
Main features:
- Valgrind will save you hours of debugging time. With Valgrind tools you can automatically detect many memory management and threading bugs. This gives you confidence that your programs are free of many common bugs, some of which would take hours to find manually, or never be found at all. You can find and eliminate bugs before they become a problem.
- Valgrind can help you speed up your programs. With Valgrind tools you can also perform very detailed profiling to help speed up your programs.
- Valgrind is free. Free-as-in-speech: you can download it, read the source code, make modifications, and pass them on, all within the limits of the GNU GPL. And free-as-in-beer: we arent charging for it.
- Valgrind runs on x86/Linux, AMD64/Linux and PPC32/Linux, several of the most popular platforms in use. Valgrind works with all the major Linux distributions, including Red Hat, SuSE, Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, Mandrake, etc.
- Valgrind is easy to use. Valgrind uses dynamic binary translation, so you dont need to modify, recompile or relink your applications. Just prefix your command line with valgrind and everything works.
- Valgrind is not a toy. Valgrind is first and foremost a debugging and profiling system for large, complex programs. We have had feedback from users working on projects with up to 25 million lines of code. It has been used on projects of all sizes, from single-user personal projects, to projects with hundreds of programmers.
- Valgrind is suitable for any type of software. Valgrind has been used on almost every kind of software imaginable: desktop applications, libraries, databases, games, web browsers, network servers, distributed control systems, virtual reality frameworks, transaction servers, compilers, interpreters, virtual machines, telecom applications, embedded software, medical imaging, scientific programming, signal processing, video/audio programs, NASA Mars lander vision and rover navigation systems, business intelligence software, financial/banking software, operating system daemons, etc, etc. See a list of projects using Valgrind.
- Valgrind is widely used. Valgrind has been used by thousands of programmers across the world. We have received feedback from users in over 25 countries, including: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, USA, Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and Israel.
- Valgrind works with programs written in any language. Because Valgrind works directly with program binaries, it works with programs written in any programming language, be they compiled, just-in-time compiled, or interpreted. The Valgrind tools are largely aimed at programs written in C and C++, because programs written in these languages tend to have the most bugs! But it can, for example, be used to debug and profile systems written in a mixture of languages. Valgrind has been used on programs written partly or entirely in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, assembly code, Fortran, Ada, and many others.
- Valgrind debugs and profiles your entire program. Unlike tools that require a recompilation step, Valgrind gives you total debugging and profiling coverage of every instruction executed by your program, even within system libraries. You can even use Valgrind on programs for which you dont have the source code.
- Valgrind can be used with other tools. Valgrind can start GDB and attach it to your program at the point(s) where errors are detected, so that you can poke around and figure out what was going on at the time.
- Valgrind is extensible. Valgrind consists of the Valgrind core, which provides a synthetic software CPU, and Valgrind tools, which plug into the core, and instrument and analyse the running program. Anyone can write powerful new tools that add arbitrary instrumentation to programs. This is much easier than writing such tools from scratch. This makes Valgrind ideal for experimenting with new kinds of debuggers, profilers, and similar tools.
- Valgrind is actively maintained. The Valgrind developers are constantly working to fix bugs, improve Valgrind, and ensure it works as new Linux distributions and libraries come out. There are also mailing lists you can subscribe to, and contact if youre having problems.
- So whats the catch? The main one is that programs run significantly more slowly under Valgrind. Depending on which tool you use, the slowdown factor can range from 5--100. This slowdown is similar to that of similar debugging and profiling tools. But since you dont have to use Valgrind all the time, this usually isnt too much of a problem. The hours youll save debugging will more than make up for it.
Enhancements:
- 3.2.3 is almost identical to 3.2.2, but fixes a regression that unfortunately crept into 3.2.2. The regression causes an assertion failure in Valgrind when running certain obscure SSE code fragments on x86-linux and amd64-linux. Please do not use (or package) 3.2.2; instead use 3.2.3.

glibc-audit 2.4-4
glibc-audit is a modified version of glibc for application developers who check their code with an automatic memory access check more>>
glibc-audit is a modified version of glibc for application developers who check their code with an automatic memory access checker such as valgrind, Insure++, or Purify.
glibc-audit has been audited and cleaned up so that reports from the developers use of a memory access checker are more likely to be interesting to the developer, with less "noise" from the C library itself. Typically, glibc-audit initializes all of its local variables and structs before use. Ordinary glibc uses uninitialized dummy variables that are "dont-care" to its logic but reported by the memory access checker.
Also, the r_debug.r_brk protocol has been enhanced to co-operate with a co-resident auditor. If the auditor sets .r_brk, then the runtime loader will call the auditor directly whenever a shared library event occurs.
This is much more convenient than using breakpoints. By default the old breakpoint protocol works just like before. The new protocol is binary compatible with the old on machines where a pointer to a function is the same size as an ordinary pointer. Platforms where a pointer to a function is larger (such as HP-PA RISC, Alpha processor, or PowerPC) are not binary backward compatible, and will have to increment r_debug.r_version. Exising clients (such as gdb) also will see an ignorable type mismatch error when they are built. But for now, it is worth more not to antagonize gdb at runtime on x86.
The patch modifies 91 files. Compared to glibc-2.3.2-27.9, the additional code occupies 18 more bytes of .text, and 24 fewer bytes in the .so. On a nano-scopic scale, the typical execution cost is 0 to 3 CPU cycles per affected routine; the estimated median total impact is less than 1 second per machine per day. In the case of *printf(), glibc-audit is faster than glibc because the cleaned-up source helps gcc-3.2 avoid generating atrocious code when initializing printf_spec.info for parse_one_spec() in stdio-common/printf-parse.h.
Glibc-audit was constructed by running a memory access checker on the internal testcases of glibc, then analyzing the reported errors and modifying the source. The process revealed 10 memory access bugs in glibc-2.3.2-11.9. Seven were fixed in glibc-2.3.2-27.9, two more have been fixed in CVS, and one is a design flaw that probably will not be fixed.
Predecessor patches to glibc-audit-1 were submitted to the glibc project, but those patches were ignored [user "guest", password "guest"], declined, or rejected. There is enough improvement in usability and reliability to publish glibc-audit-1 separately.
The unmodified glibc-2.3.2-27.9.src.rpm is available from RedHat mirrors. rpmbuild -ba --target i686 took about 4 hours and 2.5GB of disk space on a machine with 1.1GHz CPU, 384MB RAM, UDMA100 disk.
Enhancements:
- The patches were updated to glibc-2.4-4.
- A glibc bug that interfered with gdb stop-on-solib-events was fixed.
- On x86, x86-64, and PowerPC, the __NR_open system call was improved to avoid leaking information from the user to the kernel.
<<lessglibc-audit has been audited and cleaned up so that reports from the developers use of a memory access checker are more likely to be interesting to the developer, with less "noise" from the C library itself.
Devel::DebugInit 0.3
Devel::DebugInit is a Perl extension for creating a debugger initialization files from C header file macros. more>>
Devel::DebugInit is a Perl extension for creating a debugger initialization files from C header file macros.
SYNOPSIS
use Devel::DebugInit::GDB;
my $gdb = new Devel::DebugInit::GDB filenames => ["/my/path/to/library.h"];
$gdb->write("/my/path/to/library/.gdbinit");
Devel::DebugInit is aimed at C/C++ developers who want access to C macro definitions from within a debugger. It provides a simple and automated way of creating debugger initialization files for a specific project. The initialization files created contain user-defined functions built from the macro definitions in the projects header files.
By calling new(), the files specified by the filenames parameter are parsed by the C preprocessor, and all macros #defined in the file (and if desired, all macros #defined by all #included files as well), will be parsed and expanded. By then calling the write() method, these macros can be written to an output file in the format of user-defined functions specific for your debugger.
By automating the process, a new file can be created whenever the code of a project changes, and that way there will not be antiquated copies lying around to trap the unwary.
NOTES
This module requires the use of one of the debugger-specific backend modules, such as Devel::DebugInit::GDB which is supplied with DebugInit. The backends supply the output routines which are specific for that debugger.
This module also requires both the C::Scan and Data::Flow modules and will not function without them.

DUMA 2.5.8
DUMA stops your program on the exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer. more>>
DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of each buffer: touch that, and your program stops.
DUMA project can catch formerly impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens Electric Fence library.
Enhancements:
- Minor bugfixes for MinGW, Mac OS X and Windows in the test environment.
- A new environment variable DUMA_REPORT_ALL_LEAKS to avoid many false leak reports in broken environments.
- A new debug helper function duma_alloc_return().
- The documentation/README have been updated.

Debug::FaultAutoBT 0.02
Debug::FaultAutoBT is a Perl module for automatic backtrace extractor on SIGSEGV, SIGBUS, etc. more>>
Debug::FaultAutoBT is a Perl module for automatic backtrace extractor on SIGSEGV, SIGBUS, etc.
SYNOPSIS
use Debug::FaultAutoBT;

my $trace = Debug::FaultAutoBT->new(
dir => "$tmp_dir",
#verbose => 1,

#core_path_base => catfile($tmp_dir, "mycore"),
#command_path => catfile($tmp_dir, "my-gdb-command"),
#debugger => "gdb",
);
# enable the sighandler
$trace->ready();
# or simply:
Debug::FaultAutoBT->new(dir => "$tmp_dir")->ready;
When a signal, that normally causes a coredump, is delivered This module attempts to automatically extract a backtrace, rather than letting the core file be dumped. This has the following benefits:
no need to setup the environment to allow core file dumped. Sometimes people just dont know how to set it up. Sometimes you arent allowed to set it up (e.g., when the webserver environment is not under your control).
if many Perl programs are run in a row and more than one program segfaults its possible to collect all backtraces, rathen then aborting the run on the first segfault or staying with only the last core file, which will overwrite all the previous ones. For example consider a live webserver or a test suite which may segfault many times for different reasons.
for huge core files, this approach saves disk space. And can be a saver when you dont have disk space left for various reasons (passed the quota?), but still have a few kilo-bytes left.
Currently the following signals are trapped:
SIGQUIT
SIGILL
SIGTRAP
SIGABRT
SIGEMT
SIGFPE
SIGBUS
SIGSEGV
SIGSYS
(If you know of other signals that should be trapped let me know. thanks.)
