FreeType2 2.3.5

FreeType2 2.3.5

FreeType 2 is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable. more>>
FreeType 2 is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable while capable of producing high-quality output (glyph images). FreeType 2 project can be used in graphics libraries, display servers, font conversion tools, text image generation tools, and many other products as well.
Note that FreeType 2 is a font service and doesnt provide APIs to perform higher-level features, like text layout or graphics processing (e.g. colored text rendering, "hollowing", etc..).
However, it greatly simplifies these tasks by providing a simple, easy to use and uniform interface to access the content of font files.
FreeType 2 is released under two open-source licenses: our own BSD-like FreeType License and the GPL. It can thus be used by any kind of projects, be they proprietary or not.
Main features:
- FreeType 2 provides a simple and easy-to-use API to access font content in a uniform way, independently of the file format. Additionally, some format-specific APIs can be used to access special data in the font file.
- Unlike most comparable libraries, FreeType 2 supports scalable font formats like TrueType or Type 1 natively and can return the outline data (and control instructions/hints) to client applications.
- The design of FreeType 2 is based on modules that can be either linked statically to the library at compile time, or loaded on demand at runtime. Modules are used to support specific font formats, or even new glyph image formats !
- FreeType 2 was written with embedded systems in mind. This means that it doesnt use static writable data (i.e. it can be run from ROM directly), that client applications can provide their own memory manager and i/o stream implementation.
- The latter allows you to easily read from ROM-based, compressed or remote font files with the same API. Several stream implementations can be used concurrently with a single FreeType 2 instance.
- You can also reduce the size of the FreeType 2 code by only compiling the modules you need for your embedded project/environment.
- By default, FreeType 2 supports the following font formats:
- TrueType fonts (and collections)
- Type 1 fonts
- CID-keyed Type 1 fonts
- CFF fonts
- OpenType fonts (both TrueType and CFF variants)
- SFNT-based bitmap fonts
- X11 PCF fonts
- Windows FNT fonts
- BDF fonts (including anti-aliased ones)
- PFR fonts
- Type42 fonts (limited support)
- From a given glyph outline, FreeType 2 is capable of producing a high-quality monochrome bitmap, or anti-aliased pixmap, using 256 levels of "gray". This is much better than the 5 levels used by Windows 9x/98/NT/2000 or FreeType 1.
- FreeType 2 supports all the character mappings defined by the TrueType and OpenType specification. It is also capable of automatically synthetizing a Unicode charmap from Type 1 fonts, which puts an end to the painful "encoding translation" headache common with this format (of course, original encodings are also available in the case where you need them..).
- The FreeType 2 core API provides simple functions to access advanced information like glyph names or kerning data.
- A full-featured and efficient TrueType bytecode interpreter. The engine is able to produce excellent output at small point sizes. This component has been extremely difficult to get right, due to the ambiguous and misleadings TrueType specifications. However, we now match Windows and Mac qualities. Please read our Patents page to learn more about some issues when using the interpreter.
- For those who dont need or want to use the bytecode interpreter for TrueType fonts, we developed our own automatic hinter module. It is also used by other scalable formats.
- FreeType 2 provides information that is often not available from other similar font engines, like kerning distances, glyph names, vertical metrics, etc..
- Due to its modular design, its easy to enhance the library to provide additional format-specific information through optional APIs (as an example, an optional API is provided to retrieve SFNT tables from TrueType and OpenType fonts).
- FreeType 2 provides its own caching subsystem since release 2.0.1. It can be used to cache either face instances or glyph images efficiently.

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. more>>
BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. At present BeleniX is a basic LiveCD distribution that boots directly off the CD into a multiuser shell. The name BeleniX is derived after the Sun God Belenos in Celtic Mythology (Do you read Asterix ?).
This distribution includes all the OpenSolaris bits in addition to other GNU/OSS software. At present the distro only supports 32 bit x86 platforms even though OpenSolaris supports AMD64 as well. Support for booting the LiveCD with AMD64 is in the works.
Main features:
- Boots into a 32bit multiuser console login prompt. Support for GUI via Xorg and a desktop environment is coming shortly.
- UserName: root, Password: belenix
- It is based on the OpenSolaris build 20 source base.
- Since it only boots into a shell without GUI, it can run in about 200MB RAM though a minimum of 256MB is good.
- It will scan the harddisk for recognizable partitions and automatically mount them. This will Not mess with any data on the harddisk. This is basically a recovery feature.
- It will try to use physical swap if the harddisk already has a formatted Solaris partition. This helps reduce RAM usage for swap.
- It automatically starts DHCP and will configure DNS/NIS via the eventhook mechanism if the DHCP server supports it.
- It allows the user to configure the Keyboard layout via a simple UI during bootup.
- Uses a 60MB space optimised ramdisk for the root filesystem.
It includes various software packages like:
- Dan Micks prtpci script that dumps PCI info in human readable format. Somewhat like lspci in Linux.
- Casper Diks acpi, AMD powernow drivers and powernow utility for CPU frequency scaling.
- Masayuki Murayamas open source network drivers.
- Juergen Keils audio drivers for Solaris.
- Includes a Grub splash screen derived from one of Chandans excellent collection.
Includes the following GNU/OSS software:
- gcc 3.4, GNU assembler (from binutils)
- Bison, Flex
- GNU Gettext, Gmake, Gtar
- Gzip and Bzip2
- Less
- Layer 4 Traceroute (an enhanced traceroute utility)
- Libiconv, Libpcap, Ncurses
- Lynx, Vim, Wget
- Top process status utility
- GNU Screen (Terminal Multiplexor)
- The aperture driver which is required to eventually get X11 working on this distro.
- Perl 5.8.4 which comes default with OpenSolaris
- Fontconfig, Freetype2, Expat: These will be required by Xorg X11 server.
- The FreeBSD math library ported to work with OpenSolaris. This is essential for a self-hosting OpenSolaris distribution

wGui 0.5.0

wGui 0.5.0

wGui is a simple, platform-independent dialog manager library using SDL and FreeType2. more>>
wGui is a platform independent dialog management library based on SDL (Simple Direct-Media Layer) and Freetype 2.
wGuis purpose is to fill the small niche of a GUI library for SDL. There are actually three well known alternatives: LibUta, ParaGUI and aedGui. wGui was spawned from the work of another project (as was LibUta), which I may someday actually get back to.
This was designed to have as few dependencies as possible, and currently only relies upon SDL and Freetype. There is also no platform dependent code, which means it should work properly on any platform that has SDL and Freetype.
wGui was also designed to take advantage of C++, the Standard Library, and the latest Object Oriented techniques. Unfortunately both SDL and Freetype are regular C projects, so not everything is strict C++.
Enhancements:
- The big change in this release was to support Unicode.
- Support for building in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 has also been added.

svgl

svgl

svgl is a library that displays SVG documents using OpenGL, taking advantage of the GPU. more>>
svgl is a library that displays SVG documents using OpenGL, taking advantage of the GPU.

Rendering:

A lot of svg 1.0 features are implemented: simples shapes, path, gradient, clipping, viewBox, opacity, < use >, animations etc.

Fonts are handled by the glft companion library, which allows for autoscaling according to the current scale, and automatic choice between vectorized glyphs or textures based on freetype2 rendering.

Texturized fonts are antialiased by freetype, while every other drawings are FSAA by OpenGL.

Next step is optimization by using various techniques like display list, culling, and cache rendering into textures.

Interacting:

Picking is provided under 2 forms:

- returns the deepest SVG element (leaf) corresponding to the shape designated by the user
- returns the stack of SVG elements under the cursor, so that UI techniques like toolglasses (see screenshot) is easily implemented

PanAndZoom done right (according to me...) : since its fast and usable, we can really use it in an interface

Tansform so-called "consolidation" (concatenation of transform matrices) allows easy implementation of scale-independant DnD.

Programming:

We try to make the api as simple as possible, for creating, manipulating, changing style, loading etc.

See demos/tutorial to see how to code with svgl.

A (pre-alpha) python extension allows for rapid application development and easy integration in wxPython.
