Freenet software lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.
Communications by Freenet nodes are encrypted and are "routed-through" other nodes to make it extremely difficult to determine who is requesting the information and what its content is.
Users contribute to the network by giving bandwidth and a portion of their hard drive (called the "data store") for storing files. Unlike other peer-to-peer file sharing networks, Freenet does not let the user control what is stored in the data store. Instead, files are kept or deleted depending on how popular they are, with the least popular being discarded to make way for newer or more popular content. Files in the data store are encrypted to reduce the likelihood of prosecution by persons wishing to censor Freenet content.
The network can be used in a number of different ways and isnt restricted to just sharing files like other peer-to-peer networks. It acts more like an Internet within an Internet. For example Freenet can be used for:

Content distribution
Unlike many cutting edge projects, Freenet long ago escaped the science lab, it has been downloaded by over 2 million users since the project started, and it is used for the distribution of censored information all over the world including countries such as China and the Middle East.
Ideas and concepts pioneered in Freenet have had a significant impact in the academic world. Our 2000 paper "Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System" was the most cited computer science paper of 2000 according to Citeseer, and Freenet has also inspired papers in the worlds of law and philosophy. Ian Clarke, Freenets creator and project coordinator, was selected as one of the top 100 innovators of 2003 by MITs Technology Review magazine.
Enhancements:
- This release operates over UDP rather than TCP.
- It can transparently operate through firewalls.
- The core architecture and algorithm have been redesigned for simplicity and efficiency.
- A new and even simpler API allowing the rapid development of third party software that interacts with Freenet has been added.

FlashUnity is a channel-based approach to an XML flash communications server and chat room.
Using the concept of channels and filters the FlashUnity server becomes extremely flexible and very easy to extend. Also, by using channels it is possible to run multiple modular functions within the same server.
Filters allow you to prefilter input for all channels or provide other functionality to all channels. This is a total rewrite of CyberSS, and the APIs and XML have multiple major changes. Each module, filter, and the chat client are in their own seperate PEAR package.
Enhancements:
- Room changes now work properly, and there are Uselist updates.
- This is the final release before 1.0.

NcFTPs purpose is to provide a powerful and flexible interface to the Internet standard File Transfer Protocol. It is intended to replace the stock ftp program that comes with the system.

Although the program appears to be rather spartan, youll find that ncftp has a wealth of valuable performance and usage features. The program was designed with an emphasis on usability, and it does as much as it can for you automatically so you can do what you expect to do with a file transfer program, which is transfer files between two interconnected systems.

Some of the cooler features include progress meters, filename completion, command-line editing, background processing, auto-resume downloads, bookmarking, cached directory listings, host redialing, working with firewalls and proxies, downloading entire directory trees, etc., etc.

The ncftp distribution comes with the useful utility programs ncftpget(1) and ncftpput(1) which were designed to do command-line FTP. In particular, they are very handy for shell scripts. This version of ncftp no longer does command-line FTP, since the main ncftp program is more of a browser-type program.

PHP FTP Client is an FTP client that is useful for allowing people behind a firewall access to FTP without opening the FTP ports inside the firewall.
It could be used as a front end to a local FTP server, and therefore allow the administrator to provide access to the FTP server only from localhost.
Main features:
- Provide FTP access through a firewall which blocks FTP
- Provide a front end to an FTP server which only allows access to the web server, thus reducing the risk of the FTP server being attacked.
Enhancements:
- Have corrected problems with missing files. Was a case of linking against files I shouldnt have been.
- Added an FAQ, which currently only explains how to use the multi-file upload feature.

NNTP Client Lib is a Java implementation of RFC 997 for newsreaders, with support for authentication and logging.
NNTP Client Lib is meant to be used by newsreader implementations as some NNTP commands irrelevant for newsreaders are not implemented. Support for MIME or any other article encoding is not included.
If you want to quickly see nntpClientLib working, run NewsDemo . Note that this prints every message to System.err; you can edit NewsDemo.java and choose any other PrintStream.

- The POST and AUTHUSER commands havent been tested (yet).

- FIX NNTPConnectionImpl.disconnect() NullPointerException if host is unreachable.

Piorun Jabber Client is a Jabber client for Gnome with user interface simmilar to IRC clients.

Currenly implemented features include: standard chat, multi-user chat, roster and subscriptions management, VCards, privacy lists, secure connections (TLS and SALSL).

Net::DAAP::Client provides objects representing connections to DAAP servers. You can fetch databases, playlists, and songs. This module was written based on a reverse engineering of Apples iTunes 4 sharing implementation. As a result, features that iTunes 4 doesnt support (browsing, searching) arent supported here.

Each connection object has a destructor, so that you can forget to disconnect without leaving the server expecting you to call back.

WARNING

If you store your object in a global variable, Perl cant seem to disconnect gracefully from the server. Until I figure out why, always store your object in a lexical (my) variable.

Perl MUD Client project is a text-based MUD client supporting SSL, ANSI, telnet negotations, and MCP.

PMC is a text based mudclient written in Perl 5. It utilizes GNU readline, supports SSL, local editing support through MCP (MudClientProtocol), full telnet negotiation support and of course ANSI support if your terminal supports it.

Unlike other mudclients with input line editors/history, it also supports the telnet character mode, which enables it to use e.g. fullscreen applications within a mud (like the xeditor found on some LP Muds).
