fileschanged 0.6.1

fileschanged is a command line utility for monitoring files for alterations. more>>
fileschanged is a GNU/Linux command-line utility that reports when files have been altered.

This software is a client to the FAM (File Alteration Monitor) server that is now available in some distributions. Heres how the fileschanged FAM client works: you give it some filenames on the command line and then it monitors those files for changes.

When it discovers that a file has changed (or has been altered), it displays the filename on the standard-output.

Heres what the usage looks like:

Usage: fileschanged [OPTION...] [FILE]...
Monitors FILEs for alterations. Display the filenames of FILEs that were created, changed, deleted, started execution or finished executing.

-s, --show=EVENT[,...] Display created, changed, deleted, executing, or
executed files (Default is "created,changed"
-a, --show-all Display all file events and the associated action
-f, --files-to-monitor (Default) Monitor the FILEs on the command line
-l, --filelist=FILE Monitor the list of filenames inside FILE
-r, --recursive Monitor subdirectories of directories
-t, --timeout=N Delay showing changed files for N seconds (Def=2)
-p, --display-action Display action when showing altered files
-x, --exec=PROG Run PROG when file altered (PROG action filename)
-?, --help Give this help list
--usage Give a short usage message
-V, --version Print program version

FILEs must exist when monitoring begins, or they will not be monitored.

Network Device Change Control 3.10

Network Device Change Control 3.10

Network Device Change Control (NDCC) is a system that monitors and records changes to the configurations of network equipment. more>>
Network Device Change Control (NDCC) is a system that monitors and records changes to the configurations of network equipment.

Network Device Change Control can store configuration snapshots for any text-based configs. It has been used to store configurations from Unix and Linux systems, Cisco routers, switches, load balancers, and firewalls, Foundry, NetScreen, Juniper, NetScaler, and others.

It only took a while to realize that router changes should be tracked. I rewrote the system to give a current and once-back system of configurations. Since I was using diff, I decided to leave the diff information in the system. Those diffs were emailed to a group so everyone knew when something was changed, along with what was changed.

Some time later, a bank needed to track configuration files, and the system was upgraded for use within a database. The first implementation was using perl as a CGI script against a PostgreSQL database. The company wanted many changes made for their auditing needs and most of those changes enhanced NDCC. Upgrades to their environment moved things to PHP and MySQL, and the system was rewritten for that environment and the old perl code has since been lost.

dpkg-changes 1.2

dpkg-changes 1.2

dpkg-changes is a simple script which will report on the packages which have been installed, or uninstalled. more>>
dpkg-changes is a simple script which will report on the packages which have been installed and uninstalled, since the script was last run.

It does this by building up a list of all the packages installed upon your system the first time it is run, then comparing that list against what the system reports whenever it is subsequently run.

The intention is that it can be placed in a crontab file for a user and be run on a daily/weekly basis to give a good idea of what has changed upon the machine.

This is particularly handy when a server is maintained by multiple people, as it allows all admins to be informed when a new package is installed.

ServerWatch is a GUI interface for the Linux NWN Server. It uses the KDE toolkit. I have changed the interface a bit from the server GUI that Bioware made for windows.

The biggest change is that I have grouped the widgets into two Tabs ("Server" and "Game"), and provided a third Tab ("Messages") that logs all server messages, and allows you to send commands to the server manually if you wish.

Inline::SLang::Changes 1.00

Inline::SLang::Changes is a Perl module with changes to previous versions of the module. more>>
Inline::SLang::Changes is a Perl module with changes to previous versions of the module.

Inline::SLang lets you write Perl subroutines in S-Lang. It dynamically translates the parameters and return values into native data types for both languages (or into Perl classes that are used to represent S-Lang types with no direct translation to Perl).

From the S-Lang library home page at http://www.s-lang.org/

S-Lang is a multi-platform programmers library designed to allow a developer to create robust multi-platform software. It provides facilities required by interactive applications such as display/screen management, keyboard input, keymaps, and so on. The most exciting feature of the library is the slang interpreter that may be easily embedded into a program to make it extensible.

FreeBSD ports monitoring 1.0

FreeBSD ports monitoring 1.0

FreeBSD ports monitoring project is a simple solution for monitoring what has changed in installed ports on a FreeBSD machine. more>>
FreeBSD ports monitoring project is a simple solution for monitoring what has changed in installed ports on a FreeBSD machine. It works quite well and shows me what is happening on some machines which are manage not only by me. And leaves some trace after handy portupgrade -a command.

But when many ports are upgraded at once output from this script becomes mess and it is hard to read what was added/removed and upgraded. Well it happens when change relates to two ports, neighbours in alphabetical sequence. Diff output with my modifiers becomes unacceptable. So I rewrote it and yes, it is now in Ruby.

kfilewatcher project watches for file changes and allows you to react on them.

Example:

kfilewatcher /tmp/test 2>&1 | while read a; do echo "File has changed - doing something"; done

This command does something every time kfilewatcher detects a change. At the moment, the only action is to output "File has changed - doing something", but you can write anything there, e.g.

- backup stuff as soon as it changes
- publish files on your homepage everytime they change
- keep directories in sync
