VectorLinux 5.8 / 5.8.6 RC1 (SOHO)
Vector Linux is a small, fast, Linux operating system for Intel, AMD and x86 compatible systems. more>>
Vector Linux is a small, fast, Linux operating system for Intel, AMD and x86 compatible systems, based on one of the original Linux distributions, Slackware.
The enormously popular Slackware is the true Unix of Linux distributions and is used by major corporations, universities and home users alike. Its popularity stems from the fact that it is a robust, versatile and almost unbreakable system.
Slackware has been traditionally known to be about as user friendly as a coiled rattlesnake and thats where Vector Linux comes into play. We have produced a bloat free, easy to install, configure and maintain Slackware based system that is second to none.
Proud to say JohnB and yours truly have released SOHO 5.1 rc1. Lots of work went into bug fixes since the beta release.
This should be close to a final but we will let you make that judgement.
Heres the list of what has been done:
- updated kdebase with a patch so command center works correctly;
- root login fixed for virtual terminals;
- new MPlayer without Samba dependency;
- vliloconf fixed so LILO installs properly with or without boot splash;
- new boot splash graphics;
- hopefully KDM issues are fixed;
- updated kernel source, please try your NVIDIA driver now;
- more hotplug fixes;
- some boot time tweaks to get things up faster....
Enhancements:
- VectorLinux is pleased to announce the availability of the RC1 release of 5.8.6 for the VectorLinux SOHO product. This RC release includes the following improvements: upgrade to X.Org 7.2 from the previous 6.9 series which adds many GUI improvements and 3D enhancements; rebuilt many core packages so they install properly in new X.Org file structure; rebuilt the core font subsystem to take advantage of the new X.Org release; updated many packages such as Pidgin (including spellcheck) and Xscreensaver; general bug fixing and driver updates. Beryl is an installable option for those wishing the ultimate 3D desktop experience. There are many other enhancements too numerous to mention.

Scintilla 1.74
Scintilla is a source code editing component and tiny IDE for Win32 and GTK+. more>>
Scintilla is a free source code editing component. Scintilla comes with complete source code and a license that permits use in any free project or commercial product.
As well as features found in standard text editing components, Scintilla includes features especially useful when editing and debugging source code. These include support for syntax styling, error indicators, code completion and call tips.
The selection margin can contain markers like those used in debuggers to indicate breakpoints and the current line. Styling choices are more open than with many editors, allowing the use of proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colours and multiple fonts.
The SinkWorld project investigates possible future directions for Scintilla to make it more flexible, robust, perform better and run on the .NET and Java virtual machines.
Development of Scintilla started as an effort to improve the text editor in PythonWin. After being frustrated by problems in the Richedit control used by PythonWin, it looked like the best way forward was to write a new edit control.
The biggest problem with Richedit and other similar controls is that they treat styling changes as important persistent changes to the document so they are saved into the undo stack and set the documents dirty flag. For source code, styling should not be persisted as it can be mechanically recreated.
Scintilla and SciTE are currently available for Intel Win32 and Linux compatible operating systems with GTK+.

intel-wings Driver 0.2
The intel-wings project is a Linux driver for the Intel Wireless Series of input devices. more>>
The intel-wings project is a Linux driver for the Intel Wireless Series of input devices.
Somehow, Intel managed to avoid using the USB Human Interface Device standards with their wireless gamepads.
All other USB gamepads work out-of-the-box: plug it in, and the computer knows that it has an X axis, a Y axis, and six buttons. Not Intel. Thats where intel-wings comes in.
Wireless Series?
Yes, youve seen them. Everyone hated them. The keyboards were of poor manufacturing, the mice eat batteries like theres no tomorrow, and the whole system was ridiculously expensive. They were killed off by Intel several years ago -- after hitting the shelves and getting a lukewarm reaction, manufacturing was stopped, and support was terminated 18 months after release.
All of these complaints are valid. On the other hand, when used infrequently, the mice last a few months, and work great on a glass coffee table in my living room. (A newer wireless optical mouse wouldnt work.)
The gamepads are actually pretty fun, in my opinion: you can have a whole bunch of them attached to one base station, which is great for playing old console games with friends. You can get a complete set of devices for $10 on eBay, and with Linux-based PVRs becoming increasingly common, I find my devices to be a great addition to my living room.
Note that I wouldnt recommend the mice to anyone that uses their computer on a regular basis, but its easier for navigating menus than a remote control. In my opinion, the Intel Wireless Series devices on Linux PVRs are the way to go.
Enhancements:
- Preliminary keyboard support was added.
- The Intel wireless keyboards are at least partially functional.

FreeBSD 6.2
FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for Intel ia32 compatible, DEC Alpha, and PC-98 architectures. more>>
FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including Pentium and Athlon), amd64 compatible (including Opteron, Athlon 64, and EM64T), IA-64, PC-98, Alpha/AXP and UltraSPARC architectures.
It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. Additional platforms are in various stages of development.
FreeBSD offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones.
FreeBSD makes an ideal Internet or Intranet server. It provides robust network services under the heaviest loads and uses memory efficiently to maintain good response times for thousands of simultaneous user processes.
The quality of FreeBSD combined with todays low-cost, high-speed PC hardware makes FreeBSD a very economical alternative to commercial UNIX workstations. It is well-suited for a great number of both desktop and server applications.
FreeBSD can be installed from a variety of media including CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, floppy disk, magnetic tape, an MS-DOS partition, or if you have a network connection, you can install it directly over anonymous FTP or NFS.
While you might expect an operating system with these features to sell for a high price, FreeBSD is available free of charge and comes with full source code.
It is easy to contribute to FreeBSD. All you need to do is find a part of FreeBSD which you think could be improved and make those changes (carefully and cleanly) and submit that back to the Project by means of send-pr or a committer, if you know one. This could be anything from documentation to artwork to source code.
Even if you are not a programmer, there are other ways to contribute to FreeBSD. The FreeBSD Foundation is a non-profit organization for which direct contributions are fully tax deductible.
Main features:
- A merged virtual memory and filesystem buffer cache continuously tunes the amount of memory used for programs and the disk cache. As a result, programs receive both excellent memory management and high performance disk access, and the system administrator is freed from the task of tuning cache sizes.
- Compatibility modules enable programs for other operating systems to run on FreeBSD, including programs for Linux, SCO UNIX, and System V Release 4.
- Soft Updates allows improved filesystem performance without sacrificing safety and reliability. It analyzes meta-data filesystem operations to avoid having to perform all of those operations synchronously. Instead, it maintains internal state about pending meta-data operations and uses this information to cache meta-data, rewrite meta-data operations to combine subsequent operations on the same files, and reorder meta-data operations so that they may be processed more efficiently. Features such as background filesystem checking and file system snapshots are built on the consistency and performance foundations of soft updates.
- File system snapshots, permitting administrators to take atomic file system snapshots for backup purposes using the free space in the file system, as well as facilitating background fsck, which allows the system to reach multiuser mode without waiting on file system cleanup operations following power outages.
- Support for IP Security (IPsec) allows improved security in networks, and support for the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6. The FreeBSD IPSEC implementation includes support for a broad range of accelerated crypto hardware.
- Out of the box support for IPv6 via the KAME IPv6 stack allows FreeBSD to be seamlessly integrated into next generation networking environments. FreeBSD even ships with many applications extended to support IPv6!
- Multi-threaded SMP architecture capable of executing the kernel in parallel on multiple processors, and with kernel preemption, allowing high priority kernel tasks to preempt other kernel activity, reducing latency. This includes a multi-threaded network stack and a multi-threaded virtual memory subsystem. With FreeBSD 6.x, support for a fully parallel VFS allows the UFS file system to run on multiple processors simultaneously, permitting load sharing of CPU-intensive I/O optimization.
- M:N application threading via pthreads permitting threads to execute on multiple CPUs in a scaleable manner, mapping many user threads onto a small number of Kernel Schedulable Entities. By adopting the Scheduler Activation model, the threading approach can be adapted to the specific requirements of a broad range of applications.
- Netgraph pluggable network stack allows developers to dynamically and easily extend the network stack through clean layered network abstractions. Netgraph nodes can implement a broad range of new network services, including encapsulation, tunneling, encryption, and performance adaptation. As a result, rapid prototyping and production deployment of enhanced network services can be performed far more easily and with fewer bugs.
- TrustedBSD MAC Framework extensible kernel security, which allows developers to customize the operating system security model for specific environments, from creating hardening policies to deploying mandatory labeled confidentiality of integrity policies. Sample seucrity policies include Multi-Level Security (MLS), and Biba Integrity Protection. Third party modules include SEBSD, a FLASK-based implementation of Type Enforcement.
- GEOM pluggable storage layer, which permits new storage services to be quickly developed and cleanly integrated into the FreeBSD storage subsystem. GEOM provides a consistent and coherrent model for discovering and layering storage services, making it possible to layer services such as RAID and volume management easily.
- FreeBSDs GEOM-Based Disk Encryption (GBDE), provides strong cryptographic protection using the GEOM Framework, and can protect file systems, swap devices, and other use of storage media.
- Kernel Queues allow programs to respond more efficiently to a variety of asynchronous events including file and socket IO, improving application and system performance.
- Accept Filters allow connection-intensive applications, such as web servers, to cleanly push part of their functionality into the operating system kernel, improving performance.

VectorLinux 5.8 SOHO Live
Vector Linux is a small, fast, Linux operating system for Intel, AMD and x86 compatible systems. more>>
Vector Linux is a small, fast, Linux operating system for Intel, AMD and x86 compatible systems, based on one of the original Linux distributions, Slackware.
The Vector development team is proud to announce SOHO 5.1.2-live. We started with SOHO 5.1 added all the recent bugfix patches, and rolled it into a livecd. This is what I believe to be the most feature packed livecd available. It comes with two complete desktops kde-3.4.2, and xfce4.
Built upon the great heritage that is slackware. this release features the 2.6.15.1 kernel, OpenOffice 2.0, Firefox-1.5, Scribus, the Gimp, Mplayer, multimedia pluggins, printer support, scanner support and everything a complete desktop/work station should have.
Plus all of Vectors own administration utilities, and just look at this list of wireless modules
If youve ever wanted to try Vector, or just wanted to show your friends, without having to partition hard drives then here is your chance.
Enhancements:
- The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.8 Live CD and the first SOHO 5.8 alpha live CD and DVD. This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live. The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD editions. The DVD edition includes all that is in the SOHO 5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE. The CD version has lost some functionality due to size constraints. The development tool chain and OpenOffice.org were removed.

View the Screenshots to get an idea how StartCom Linux looks.
Enhancements:
- The newest StartCom Enterprise Linux AS-5.0.0 joins a series of successful and reliable operating systems build and distributed over the last three years by StartCom Ltd. This latest release provides full support for virtualization - the running of multiple instances of operating systems on one physical hardware unit. Depending on the installation preferences, AS-5.0.0 can function as server platform as well as advanced client workstation.
- StartCom Linux is using the latest in open source technology and with its known stability, reliability and security allows for mission-critical server deployments. The Global File System (GFS) provided in AS-5.0.0 allows the building and maintaining of high availability computer clusters, mainly used for data centers.
- The natural support of the XEN hypervisor, makes the running of multiple virtualized server instances possible. The benefits of server virtualization are consolidation, increased utilization, an ability to rapidly provision and start a virtual machine, and increased ability to dynamically respond to hardware failures by moving a virtual machine to different hardware.
- The enhanced usability of the desktop applications makes AS-5.0.0 also an excellent choice for client and development workstations. Many well known products such as Firefox, OpenOffice and Eclipse IDE are provided already during installation as possible options.
- StartCom Enterprise Linux AS-5.0.0 codenamed "Kishuf" is available for Intel i386 and AMD x86_64 architectures. DVD ISO images can be downloaded for free or ordered for a nominal fee. Alternative installation options via network or harddrive are also available.
