Free first live software for linux

AFROS Live CD is a bootable CD with a small collection of GNU/Linux software, ARAnyM and the AFROS. AFROS Live CD boots and runs completely from CD, does not write anything to the harddrive and so is safe to try out. It is meant as a demo version of ARAnyM/AFROS. It is not the dreamed Installation CD of ARAnyM yet (although it could be modified to work so).

The underlying Linux kernel and related software provide the CD autoboot, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. ARAnyM plus AFROS provide our familiar and favourite TOS/FreeMiNT/GEM operating environment. Its all integrated seamlessly and after PowerOn boots straight to the Teradesk (GEM desktop).

AFROS Live CD is distributed in the form of a CD ISO image which is the usual way of distributing CDs electronically. The ISO image file can be burnt on a CD-R/RW and so youll get an exact copy of the AFROS Live CD I created on my machine.

AFROS Live CD configuration:

fVDI resolution and/or color depth change: open up the C:FVDI.SYS (double click it and select Edit), locate the "01r aranym.sys mode 800x600x16@72" line, comment it out and uncomment one of the other prepared lines (or just make up your own). Then reboot the AFROS.

The ARAnyM Config GUI is unfinished yet so changes to ARAnyM config must be done outside of ARAnyM in the .aranym/config file. When you quit ARAnyM you should be able to edit the file with one of the supplied GNU/Linux editors (in the future this shouldnt be necessary as I am working on the Config GUI as you read this).

DSL site (AFROS Live CD is based on the DSL) might give you some hints about preserving the changes youve made to the AFROS disk image or ARAnyM configuration (you might also want to read File Restoration -> HowTo in the X11 desktop). Note that this is untested by me and might be dangerous. Try it on your own risk only.

Cluster Live can do the following:

How does it work?
- A server gets booted by a Cluster Live CD.
- The clients BIOS is configured to boot through the LAN by default.
- When the server has finished the bootup sequence, the client can be booted through the LAN.
What was it tested with?
- IBM Thinkpad T30 (CPU: Pentium 4 - 1GHz; RAM: 512MB)
- Virtual Machines (Software to allow running of multiple O.S. simultaneously)
- IDE CDRW (To rewrite the ISO image on to the CD for testing)
- A hub with several LAN cables connecting the infrastructure.
- Source built with Red Hat Fedora Core 3 Linux

Rails Live CD project was born on Ezra Zygmuntowicz blog and realized with help from Brian Ketelsen. Rails Live CD is based on PCLinuxOS which is a great Linux distribution for creating LiveCDs. More information at PCLinusOS.com
To use it, just download, burn and reboot! Or if you have a virtualization or emulation engine like Qemu, Parallels or VMWare it is even easier.
Many people are curious about Ruby on Rails but dont want to go through the pain of installing it locally. The Rails Live CD solves this problem by allowing you to have a fully operating Ruby on Rails development environment without even touching your hard drive!
Others are interested in developing Ruby on Rails applications in Linux but dont have the skills or the patience to do the installation and compiling required to get Ruby on Rails running on a typical Linux installation.

Tao Linux is a project to build a free Linux distribution from the sources used in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux product line.
The target market is either experienced system administrators who would like freely available binaries of this code, or end users who are interested in experimenting with enterprise functionality.
Besides being mostly compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, it also includes software packages such as Eclipse and clustering tools not found in the base RHEL products.

- Based on commercially produced Enterprise sources
- Many packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux also run on Tao Linux
- Free as in speech and beer
- Security updates (in SRPM form, at least) available for seven years.

Vector Linux is a fast, small, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of Vector Linux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere.
For the casual computer user you have a lightening fast desktop with graphical programs to handle your daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on ICQ or IRC to running an ftp server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile their own programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for their home or office computer network.
Administrators will be equally as pleased because the small size and memory requirements of the operating system can be deployed on older machines maybe long forgotten.
Well here it is. we couldnt let the soho people have all the fun could we? This live-cd represents as close as possible VectorLinux 5.1 standard. It comes with kernel 2.6.15.3 udev-085 ndiswrapper 1.9, and everything else from standard, like icewm, fluxbox, and xfce4.

- The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.8 Live CD and the first SOHO 5.8 alpha live CD and DVD. This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live. The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD editions. The DVD edition includes all that is in the SOHO 5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE. The CD version has lost some functionality due to size constraints. The development tool chain and OpenOffice.org were removed.
