xmountains 2.7

xmountains 2.7

xmountains is a project which renders a fractal mountain range. more>>
xmountains is a project which renders a fractal mountain range.
xmountains is a classic X11 hack that renders a fractally-generated mountain range that slowly scrolls across your desktop.
The basic idea behind a fractal landscape is to generate a continuous surface which varies in height randomly but with the random variation obeying a particular statistical law.
In the case of a fractal landscape the average difference in height between pairs of points separated by a distance l should go as a power law in l.
If you are only interested in random terrain generation rather than fractal self-similarity then you could use other functions of l that tend to zero as l tends to zero.
If the function does not tend to zero then the result will not be continuous
Enhancements:
- Added a -n flag to set the number of colours.
- This changes the same parameter as -B but you request total number of colours.

Firebird Relational Database 2.0 / 2.1 Beta 1

Firebird Relational Database 2.0 / 2.1 Beta 1

Firebird Relational Database is a cluster of databases through JDBC. more>>
Firebird is a relational database offering many ANSI SQL-99 features that runs on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms.

Firebird offers excellent concurrency, high performance, and powerful language support for stored procedures and triggers. Firebird Relational Database has been used in production systems and under a variety of names since 1981.

Firebird is a commercially independent project of C and C++ programmers, technical advisors and supporters developing and enhancing a multi-platform relational database management system based on the source code released by Inprise Corp (now known as Borland Software Corp) on 25 July, 2000 under the InterBase Public License v.1.0.

New code modules added to Firebird are licensed under the Initial Developers Public License. (IDPL). The original modules released by Inprise are licensed under the InterBase Public License v.1.0. Both licences are modified versions of the Mozilla Public License v.1.1.

Installing:

In order to install the firebird version of IB 6.0 you will need to perform the following steps:

1. Get the required packages:

Get the glibc update from RedHat, the one I used
was from ftp://updates.redhat.com/7.0/i386/glibc-2.2-5.i386.rpm

Get ncurses4 from
ftp://carrier.ision.net/pub/ftp.redhat.com/i386/en/RedHat/RPMS/ncurses4-5.0-2.i386.rpm
or another redhat mirror.

Get Firebird from
ftp://firebird.sourceforge.net/pub/firebird/release/FirebirdSS-0.9-1.i386.rpm

2. Prepare the installation:

Log in as root.
Use a plain text console to do this and be sure
that all Gnome desktops are closed.
(One user reported that the Gnome desktop
(apparently ICEwm)
blocked port 3050. I could not reproduce this
here, but it seems that it uses port numbers
that arent assigned in /etc/services for own
purposes)

3. Add localhost.localdomain to /etc/hosts.equiv:
echo localhost.localdomain >>/etc/hosts.equiv

4. Change to the directory where you have placed
the downloaded packages.

5. Install the glibc update:
rpm --install --force glibc-2.2-5.i386.rpm

6. Install libncurses.so.4:
rpm --install --force ncurses4-5.0-2.i386.rpm

7. Install Firebird:
rpm --install --force FirebirdSS-0.9-1.i386.rpm

8. Add /opt/interbase/bin to your path:
You can either change /etc/profile
or do
export PATH=$PATH: /opt/interbase/bin
or
change the profiles in your users home directories

9. Check that all went well:

Read /opt/interbase/SYSDBA.password
to get your SYSDBA password.

gsec -display
should display the list of known users
(SYSDBA only after a fresh install)

isql /opt/interbase/examples/employee.gdb
SQL> SHOW TABLES;
should display all tables from this database
SQL>quit;

Mountain Climbing Journal for liux 2.4.9

Mountain Climbing Journal for liux 2.4.9

Means to publish journal entries and other content to the World Wide Web. more>> The Mountain Climbing Journal (MCJ) is a free standalone journal application released under the GPL that runs on Windows (98-Vista), MacOS X, or GNU/Linux (SUSE, Red Hat, and others) systems. The MCJ does not require a web server to manage the entries. Journal entries can be private or they can easily be published using the content management (CMS) features as a complete website.
The MCJ categorizes journal entries by using keywords based on a user chosen list of categories, as well as by person, place, thing, and time. The keywords are generated by simply highlighting the keyword and clicking the appropriate icon. Navigation of the resulting collection of keywords and articles is quick and easy, with the keywords showing up in red in the journal entry box when chosen. MCJ uses icons for the main journal window that are not specific to a particular language.
MCJ provides a means to publish journal entries and other content to the World Wide Web with a content management system (CMS). Unlike most CMSs, MCJ does not require a server-side scripting language. The website is generated as HTML and one RSS XML file. Many of the decisions about how the website will look are already decided. There is, though, quite a bit of variation.
MCJ stores all data in a SQLite database. Although there is a cost in performance, all changes are immediately committed and the database is closed to prevent corruption.

L2FProd.com Common Components 6.9.1

L2FProd.com Common Components 6.9.1

Swing has lot of components built-in but still some are missing. more>>
Swing has lot of components built-in but still some are missing. L2FProd.com Common Components project provides the developer community with these missing components, components inspired (copied?!) from modern user interfaces.
Editing properties
This is the main job of the PropertySheet component, it puts together a list of properties and their editors. Each property is given a name, a type, a description. It also supports JavaBeans through BeanInfos and PropertyDescriptors.
Building task oriented applications
Lot of recent applications bring contextual item lists from which you can pick tasks related to the current selection or context. The JTaskPane and JTaskPaneGroup deliver this feature to java applications.
Organizing the option dialog
Even if this is not the primary goal of the JButtonBar, this is where you often find it. It is a bar made of buttons [sic], you have seen it in Mozilla Firebird, IntelliJ.
Build the nextgen e-mail client
the JOutlookBar (seen in...Outlook) stacks components together and allows only one of the stack to be visible at a given time. The component extends the JTabbedPane, no surprise regarding its API
Selecting fonts and directories
Surprisingly Swing has no font chooser and using the original JFileChooser to select a directory is kind of not so user friendly...well, you know how it works. JFontChooser and JDirectoryChooser address these two issues.
Enhancements:
- A change in 6.9 broke the look and feel of several custom components: these components would use only the default "basic" look, instead of the one associated with the currently installed Swing look and feel.
- This update is recommended for all users who upgraded to 6.9.

DropTeam 1.2.2 DEMO

DropTeam 1.2.2 DEMO

DropTeam is an online multiplayer FPS for Linux. more>>
DropTeam is an online multiplayer FPS for Linux.
DropTeam combines accurate physics and ballistic systems, intelligent and realistic unit and weaponry capabilities with fast paced action set in a stark future of humanity. This Public Test is being offered in three different formats. One for Mac, one for Windows and one for Linux. This marks the first title published by Battlefront.com to offer Linux support!
Main features:
- A rich, fleshed out universe complete with a engaging back story and detailed history.
- Realistic combat system that models projectile/armor penetration, various munition types, and interior vehicle damage in detail.
- Huge, detailed and varied alien landscapes each planet accurately modeling its own gravity and atmospheric density, radically changing the tactical situation.
- Map sizes up to a massive 1000 (!) square kilometers.
- Terrain height resolutions from small ridges and vehicle fighting positions to towering hills and mountains.
- Deformable terrain with engineering vehicles digging out trenches in real time, ordnance created surface cratering and even trees toppling over under artillery fire.
- Dynamic environmental effects include building destruction and vehicles exploding and flipping over.
- Support for enhanced graphics effects including advanced shaders and High Dynamic Range rendering.
- Terrain uses dynamic tessellation (continuous Level of Detail) to render high resolution terrain at large sizes.
- Up to 16 human players or more supported, depending on system specs. Maximum online players realistically only limited by game server bandwidth, CPU and RAM.
More background and info on the game can be found on the DropTeam webpage located here.
The purpose of this release is to test DropTeams network functionality with a large number of players. Anyone can play for free in order to help us test DropTeam but this build has the following important restrictions:
1. Single player is disabled. You can only play network games with this release. The full version of the game includes single player skirmish games and a single player campaign.
2. This release only allows you to play 2 scenarios. The full version of the game includes 21 scenarios with more available for free download after release.
3. This is a test release, which means the game isnt finished yet. It definitely still has bugs. We greatly appreciate your help in finding and fixing them all!
Apart from these restrictions, this is a fully functional release. Players can use all of the dozens of vehicles and deployable items in the game. The two included scenarios are "Ice Field" and "Raid". Ice Field takes place on the frozen wasteland of Arcanum, a once-inhabitable planet orbiting Luytens Star that has had its climate devastated by bombardments from the Mu Arae Entente. The Raid scenario takes place on an inhabitable moon called Hopewell. Hopewell orbits a gas giant in the Wolf 9773 star system. Almost half of the moons surface, called "The Scorch", is a radioactive Hell created by the destruction of an antimatter station that used to orbit the gas giant. The remainder of Hopewell has recovered from this disaster and is once again beginning to flourish with vegetation and a growing human population.
This release includes everything needed to connect to servers and play on the Internet or on Local Area Networks on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X Tiger. It also includes everything needed for players to run their own public or private servers. This is important since there will be a limited number of public servers made available by TBG. We plan to run only 6 servers for this public test release so players might need to run their own servers if they want to play frequently.

Dada Mail 3.0.4 / 3.1 Alpha 1

Dada Mail 3.0.4 / 3.1 Alpha 1

A Web-based mailing list manager. more>>
Dada Mail 3.0.4 / 3.1 Alpha 1 is created to be a general purpose mailing list manager which is useful for small to medium organizations such as businesses, non-profit organizations and personal sites. A Mailing List Manager is a program that handles the subscriptions of a mailing list and in this case also sends out mailing list messages - emails that are received by everyone that is subscribed to the mailing list.

The goal in this perspective of Dada Mail is to be able to be easily installed and useful by a web-savvy person. This person does not have to be a professional web designer/developer. It is also hoped that there is much breathing room for the program to grow with the needs and expectations of whatever organization it is to be used for.

Dada Mail is also a many-tiered art project. The initial goal was to see how far a self-taught, admittedly poor math student could take a computer program, written from scratch. The answer it seems, is very very far. The idea being played with is of a person taking on a role that doesn't seem to fit them well and flourishing. This wasn't acting, this was real life. Four Years is a Long Time.

Dada Mail is also used to question the idea on what a piece of software is and what it isn't, making definitions such as "name", "function", "purpose", slippery. The creator of Dada Mail, Justin Simoni, has many more credentials as an Artist, attending the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design as a senior in their Drawing and Painting program, than he does as a Software Engineer, of which credentials he has none, except the time he has spent with projects, like Dada Mail.

Major Features :

  1. Dada Mail is a Web-Based System. You don't need to remember cryptic commands to send to a special address just to have the program e-mail you back telling you youre wrong. You administrate your lists using a control panel you view through your web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
  2. Dada Mail Supports an Unlimited Number of Mailing Lists. Dada Mail was made from the start to be expandable. Each list can be managed separately with a different password for protection. Setting up a list can take as little as a minute to make! All list information can be changed at any time.
  3. Dada Mail Is Customizable. Most pages generated by Dada Mail can be wrapped in a template a look and design that you want your list to have. Dada Mail can look exactly like the rest of your web site, making less of a separate CGI script and more a part of your web site that comes alive to your visitors. Messages Dada Mail sends can also be customized, you get to word exactly how you want your messages sent. Even the signup form that you can put on any page of your web site can be changed for your taste automatically.
  4. Dada Mail Archives List Messages. Dada Mail keeps an archive of every mass mailing message it sends and also provides a simple way to view them. Archiving can be paused and archives can be hidden from your visitors but not from you the list owner.
  5. Dada Mail Supports Announce-Only and Group Lists. You can extend Dada Mail with a script that's included with Dada Mail to send list messages from your own e-mail client, like Eudora or Outlook. Group Lists can be setup easily from your control panel and you can set up a thriving group discussion list.
  6. Dada Mail Is Free! There is no need to have you make a decision on picking a mailing list manager by giving you a crippled "version" and then only give you the real version after you pay money for a piece of software that may not do what you really need.
  7. Dada Mail is Supported! This entire site is provided to answer any questions you have and help you even when your Dada is installed.
  8. Dada Mail is Easy To Use. Hard things are easy in Dada Mail. They should be. Features you don't need can be turned off if wanted. All error messages give you precise information on what went wrong and how to use it. Its more advice on how to do what your doing better than telling you youre wrong.
  9. Dada Mail is Powerful. In minutes you can set up your entire list system, with announce-only lists for special e-mailings and group lists for discussion. Dada Mail can even be enhanced with the help of other programs like Majordomo another list manager and Mhonarch, an e-mail archiver.
  10. Sign Up to the Skazat Design Newsletter.
  11. See how easy it is for your visitors to use Dada Mail. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Enhancements: This release fixes over 20 bugs since the 3.0.0 release, and is meant to be as easy to upgrade from 3.0.0 as possible.
