Free exif software for linux

CPEXIF project utility copies EXIF data from a NEF (Nikon RAW file) or a JPEG file to a JPEG file.
The CPEXIF program is free software released under the terms of the GNU General Public License. There is no warranty, use it at your own risk.
CPEXIF is a command line utility.
Usage:
NEF to JPEG copy mode
The usage is:
cpexif [options] source.nef destination.jpg
available options are:
--nomakernote
--noisofix
In this mode CPEXIF copies the EXIF data from the source NEF file (Nikon RAW file) to the destination JPEG file. Thumbnails are not copied.
The --nomakernote option instructs the program to strip the MakerNote field from the EXIF data. This reduces the EXIF data size, in many cases substantially. It is intended to overcome the 64kB limit. Some information about the equipment and the picture will be lost when you use this option.
Many Nikon cameras store the ISO Speed value in a non-standard way. By default, CPEXIF fixes it by adding the missing ISO field. It creates one using the information from the MakerNote field. Most people want this, but if you dont, use the --noisofix option.
JPEG to JPEG copy mode
The syntax is straightforward:
cpexif source.jpg destination.jpg
CPEXIF copies the whole file segment containing the EXIF data without examining it. That explains why data modification cannot be performed (no ISO fix for Nikon users, sorry) and no options are available in this mode. This approach prevents any compatibility problems, so JPEGs from any digital camera can be processed this way.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes JPEG file corruption with EXIF data larger than 64K.
- A new JPEG to JPEG copy mode has been added.
- An automatic fix for the missing standard ISO Speed field has been added in the NEF to JPEG copy mode.

phpExifRW provides an Exif reader & writer.

Libkexif is a library for manipulating EXIF information embedded in images. The project currently supports viewing of all EXIF information via libexif.
It also supports the modification of a few attributes in a safe way that preserves all other EXIF information in the file. It can currently modify the following tags:
IFD0/Orientation
EXIF/UserCommend
Enhancements:
- A possible loss of data has been discovered in OpenBSD, in Linux the problem seems not to be present, or hard to reproduce. This release fix such a problem.

ExifTagger project is a perl gtk2 app that provides a convenient graphical interface to tagging images.
Unlike most other tools, this inserts the tag information into the images as Exif, so they will permanently be part of the digital image. The interface is pretty intuitive, though more information will come with time.
It works enough for me to post source, though clearly is at a very early alpha, so use at your own risk. If you find a bug, please email me at sean at dague dot net, and Ill see what I can do.
Enhancements:
- Rotation buttons that set the Orientation EXIF attribute were added.
- The cursor is set to an hourglass when loading images.
- A "Loading..." image is overlaid when loading the next image.
- The image size is saved to a state file, removing an automatic resize on the initial load.

PhotoExifProcesS is short bash script is used to rename the photos with its exif date-time data (date time original of the snapshot).
Installation:
unpack the archive.
peps.desktop => ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus
peps => ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/.source (thats the way I use it, but you can choose an other folder for peps file)
NB :
EXIF : command-line utility to show EXIF information in JPEG files must be available on your system.

Image::ExifTool::MIE is a Perl module to read/write MIE meta information.

Features

Below is very subjective score card comparing the features of a number of common file and meta information formats, and comparing them to MIE. The following features are rated for each format with a score of 0 to 10:

1) Extensible (can incorporate user-defined information).
2) Meaningful tag IDs (hint to meaning of unknown information).
3) Sequential read/write ability (streamable).
4) Hierarchical information structure.
5) Easy to implement reader/writer/editor.
6) Order of information well defined.
7) Large data lengths supported: >64kB (+5) and >4GB (+5).
8) Localized text strings.
9) Multiple documents in a single file.
10) Compact format doesnt squander disk space or bandwidth.
11) Compressed meta information supported.
12) Relocatable data elements (ie. no fixed offsets).
13) Binary meta information (+7) with variable byte order (+3).
14) Mandatory tags not required (an unecessary complication).
15) Append information to end of file without editing.

By design, MIE ranks highest by a significant margin. Other formats with reasonable scores are PDF, PNG and XMP, but each has significant weak points. What may be surprising is that TIFF, EXIF and IPTC rank so low.

As well as scoring high in all these features, the MIE format has the unique ability to encapsulate any other type of file, and provides a non-invasive method of adding meta information to a file. The meta information is logically separated from the original file data, which is extremely important because meta information is routinely lost when files are edited.

Also, the MIE format supports multiple files by simple concatenation, enabling all kinds of wonderful features such as linear databas

Exiv2 comprises of a C++ library and a command line utility to access image metadata. Exiv2 is free software and it is released under the GPL Public License.
Exiv2 is also a command line utility to
- print the Exif metadata of Jpeg images as summary info, interpreted values, or the plain data for each tag (here is a sample)
- print the Iptc metadata of Jpeg images
- print the Jpeg comment of Jpeg images
- set, add and delete Exif and Iptc metadata of Jpeg images
- adjust the Exif timestamp (thats how it all started...)
- rename Exif image files according to the Exif timestamp
- extract, insert and delete Exif metadata, Iptc metadata and Jpeg comments
- extract, insert and delete the thumbnail image embedded in the Exif metadata
Main features:
1. full read and write access to the Exif and Iptc metadata of an image through Exiv2 keys and standard C++ iterators
2. a smart Iptc implementation that does not effect data that programs like Photoshop store in the same image segment
3. Exif MakerNote support:
-MakerNote tags can be accessed just like any other Exif metadata
-a sophisticated write algorithm avoids corrupting the MakerNote:
o the MakerNote is not re-located if possible at all, and
o MakerNote Ifd offsets are re-calculated if the MakerNote needs to be moved (for known Ifd MakerNotes)
4. new camera make/model specific MakerNotes can be added to the library with minimum effort in OO-fashion (by subclassing MakerNote or IfdMakerNote)
5. extract and delete methods for Exif thumbnails (both, Jpeg and Tiff thumbnails)

Enhancements:
- This maintenance release fixes a number of bugs, adds support for Minolta G500 RAW files, and has minor tag updates and some larger translation updates.

MediaSort is a tool that indexes, sorts, and renames media files such as pictures and MP3s based on any of their metadata attributes.
For example, you can sort your pictures by date, size, or other EXIF attributes, or MP3s by author, album, or other ID3 tag values. MediaSort is also a "sorting" Ant FileMapper that can be used with any other Ant tasks to achieve more complex work.
