eSpeak 1.28

eSpeak 1.28

eSpeak is a software speech synthesizer for English, and potentially other languages. more>>
eSpeak is a software speech synthesizer for English, and potentially other languages.
eSpeak produces good quality English speech. It uses a different synthesis method from other open source TTS engines, and sounds quite different. Its perhaps not as natural or "smooth", but I find the articulation clearer and easier to listen to for long periods.
eSpeak project can run as a command line program to speak text from a file or from stdin. It works well as a "Talker" with the KDE text to speech system (KTTS), as an alternative to Festival for example. As such, it can speak text which has been selected into the clipboard, or directly from the Konquerer browser or the Kate editor.
- Includes different Voices, whose characteristics can be altered.
- Can produce speech output as a WAV file.
- Can translate text to phoneme codes, so it could be adapted as a front end for another speech synthesis engine.
- Potential for other languages. Rudimentary (and probably humourous) attempts at German and Esperanto are included.
- Compact size. The program and its data total about 350 kbytes.
- Written in C++.
I regularly use it to listen to blogs and news sites. I prefer the sound through a domestic stereo system rather than my small computer speakers.
INSTALLATION:
- Place the "speak" executable file in the command path, eg in /usr/local/bin
- Place the "speak-data" directory in /usr/share as /usr/share/speak-data.
Alternatively if it is placed in the users home directory (i.e. /home/ /speak-data) then that will be used instead.
- Dependencies.
speak uses the PortAudio sound library, so you will need to have the libportaudio0 library package installed. It may be already, since its used by other software, such as OpenOffice.org and the Audacity sound editor.
COMMAND OPTIONS:
Examples
To use at the command line, type:
speak -f < text file >
Or just type
speak
followed by text on subsequent lines. Each line is spoken when RETURN is pressed. Use speak -p to see the corresponding phonemes codes.
echo "This is a test" | speak
Speaking from a single line command.
Enhancements:
- Roman number translation added for some languages.
- Improvements to languages, including en-r, Hungarian, Romanian.
- Various bug fixes.

EPUBReader 1.3.0.3

EPUBReader 1.3.0.3

EPUBReader works as a convenient Firefox addon that lets you read ePub-files right within the browser. more>>

EPUBReader 1.3.0.3 works as a convenient Firefox addon that lets you read ePub-files right within the browser. You don\'t need to install additional software. If you click on a link to an ePub-file, you are normally prompted by the Firefox \"save as\" dialog. With EPUBReader installed, the ePub-file is downloaded, processed and directly displayed ready to read.

An ePub-file is essentially an archive of HTML files. So why not read ePub-files with a program which is specialized in displaying HTML-files and many people have already installed? That\'s the idea which lead to the creation of EPUBReader as a Firefox addon. It runs on every platform Firefox does (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). EPUBReader is running now on Maemo (N810, N900).

EPUBReader is available in 23 different languages: Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (European), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Traditional Chinese, Turkish.

Enhancements:

  • In some cases Firefox 4 crashed, when an eBook with EPUBReader was loaded and Tabs were switched. This has been fixed.

Requirements:

  • Firefox 3.0 - 4.0b6
  • SeaMonkey 2.0 - 2.0.*
  • Mobile 1.0 - 1.1.*

fonty-rg 0.5

fonty-rg 0.5

fonty-rg is a set of fonts for the Linux console. more>>
fonty-rg project is a set of fonts for the Linux console.

LatCyrGr-16.psf is font containing most of ISO Latin characters, lot of cyrillic chars, lot of greek chars, and some punctuation. It is good for unicode linux console. This is 512 character font, means that you loose bold colour on linux console, unless you are using framebuffer.

chavo.psf is font containing lot of ISO-8859-2 repertoire, some additional ISO-8859-1 characters, Russian cyrillic characters and special Esperanto characters. It was specifically created to cover Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, Russian, German, Esperanto. Of course, it accidentally covers much wider range.

Good as a console font if you want to retain bold colours (and do not need some ISO-8859-1 characters - there was simply not enough space for them).

Usage

To build fonts: run build.sh script.
To modify fonts: edit files in source/ directory.
To add new charsets: add *.txt file into charsets/ directory.

To use fonts: there are two small scripts provided, iso and uni.
iso takes as an argument number of ISO-8859 encoding, switching console font into font for that encoding, and uni switches console into unicode mode, using big unicode font. See manpages for details.

Klavaro 1.0.3

Klavaro 1.0.3

Klavaro is a touch typing tutor that is very flexible and supports customizable keyboard layouts. more>>
Klavaro application is just another free touch typing tutor program. We felt like to do it because we became frustrated with the other options, which relied mostly on some few specific keyboards.
Klavaro intends to be keyboard and language independent, saving memory and time (and money).
Main features:
- Internationalization: English, Esperanto and Portuguese. If you want to translate to another language, please read the instructions for translation.
- Ready to use keyboard layouts:
- "qwerty" (BR; BR_abnt0; BR_abnt2; IT; PT; US)
- dvorak (US)
- "qwertz" (HU)
- "azerty" (FR)
- Keyboard layout editor: makes possible to configure the keys positions and to save the result in a simple text file. If your keyboard isnt shown above, you can create it. If you need to do it, please let us know about.
- Basic course: a basic type of course is available for memorizing the keys positions on the keyboard. It is supposed to be independent from keyboard layout, by the generation of random character sequences to be followed by the student.
- Adaptability exercises: these exercises use all the keys ramdonly, so that you can practice using all the keyboard. Its named adaptability exercise because it develops the capacity to adapt your typing skills to any kind of strange words that may appear in some texts.
- Velocity exercises: one achieves velocity on typing when the environment is well known, or, when the words come from ones own language. Thats why these exercises focus on velocity. And even if your language isnt supported by the application, you still can indicate texts in any language to include the words contained there.
- Fluidness exercises: with these exercises, one works typing complete paragraphs, with good sense sentences. Typing errors arent accepted: the user must correct them with the backspace key before be allowed to go on. Especial attention is given to the typing rhythm, which must be as uniform as possible. Just like the velocity exercises, this one here makes possible to load any text files, independently of language.
- Progress charts: at the accomplishment of each exercise, some characteristics of your performance are saved and can be graphically showed. Thus, you can easily observe your learning progress (or regress).
- Clean graphical interface: when learning to type correctly, one must not get the attention off the exercises. So, it isnt recommended neither to have dozens of gauges measuring velocity, errors, time, etc; nor a virtual keyboard floating in front of the student: he/she must memorize the key positions by the tact, not visually. Hence, Klavaros interface started simple and will remain like that for all of its lifetime.
Enhancements:
- A Dutch translation was added.
- Turkish keyboard layouts were added.
- Size is now limited for loading personal text files in velocity and fluidness exercises, avoiding program freezings and/or segmentation faults.
- Interpretation of the environment variable LANGUAGE was corrected.
- Some code cleanup was done.

Interkonekto TXT - DXF 2.0

Interkonekto TXT - DXF 2.0

Interkonekto TXT - DXF is developed to be a helpful and beneficial program which makes it possible for you to help on drawing interconnection diagrams. more>>

Interkonekto TXT - DXF 2.0 is developed to be a helpful and beneficial program which makes it possible for you to help on drawing interconnection diagrams. These are a human-readable form of how electrical cables are interconnecting two or more equipments.

It\'s a technical problem which demands much attention to avoid errors when putting it into the graphical form. That makes it a hard task to be accomplished by human beings. So, a robot is more appropriate to quickly draw this type of diagrams, with all the necessary accuracy.

Major Features:
  1. The program reads a DXF file containing layout definitions of the drawings, text files containing a bunch of data describing the interconnection terminal blocks of the equipments and, finally, how the pieces are binded to each other, as in a net or graph. The output is a collection of DXF files similar to the DXF template, organized accordingly to the interconnection structure specified into the data text files.
  2. Interkonekto doesn\'t provide any facility to create the input files. They must be generated using other general purpose applications, such as spreadsheet and CAD drawing programs. Its GTK graphical interface is just a helper to organize all the required data and parameters. A comprehensive manual gives details about the format of the input files. Only the original Esperanto version of this manual is provided, no translation was made at all.
  3. There doesn\'t seem to be any other program similar to this in the internet. Maybe because it\'s useful to only a very specific kind of technical problem. Unfortunately for most English people, They do not intend to provide English translation for it. So, if you are really interested, learn Esperanto! That doesn\'t mean prohibition to translate: in free software everything is possible. But..., does anyone volunteer doing it for them?
Requirements:
  • Gtk+
