Fair DJ 1.0.0

Fair DJ 1.0.0

Fair DJ is an Mserv-compatible music server designed to play music in a room with several users sharing a set of speakers. more>>
Fair DJ is an Mserv-compatible music server designed to play music in a room with several users sharing a set of speakers.

The users can rate songs, and Fair DJ selects songs using these ratings and a fairness algorithm to ensure that everybody is happy.

FairDJ is an extended version of Mserv, written in the Java programming language.

Installation:

Starting fairdj for the first time will create a settings file in your users home directory. FairDJ will print out a helpful location message specifying the path to this file. Since you most likely want to edit this file before starting Fair DJ for real, weve included a helpful install option which simply exits after creating the settings file.

Start FairDJ with the following command line:

java -jar fairdj.jar -install

FairDJ should exit after logging a message specifying where the settings file was written. To specify another location for this settings file, use the settings option:

java -jar fairdj.jar -settings < settings file >

Edit the settings file by hand, using your favourite XML/Text editor, to point to wherever you want to store your ratings, where your music is, and where your user database should be. The settings file is fairly well commented and should provide you with the information you need to configure your Fair DJ installation. The new user database will be empty, and only the default user and password, as specified in the settings file, will be valid.

To get help on the available options, use the help option:

java -jar fairdj.jar -help [< option >]

To connect to FairDJ, connect with a telnet client to the specified port (default 4444), for example:

telnet localhost 4444

Log in with your default user and password. To get help on the available commands in FairDJ, type "help" followed by enter in the telnet client.

Start by creating a superuser (master), and a user for yourself. They can be the same if you want to. Here is an example:

create myuser mypass MASTER

If you need further assistance, please check out the forum at: http://hirt.se/php/phpBB2/index.php

Known issues:
* Ogg tag support has not been verified.
* Equalizer has not been implemented.

SMPlayer 0.6.8 offers users a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume...

Major Features:

  1. Configurable subtitles. You can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles.
  2. Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
  3. Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
  4. Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
  5. Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
  6. Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
  7. Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
  8. Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
  9. Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
  10. Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
  11. Possibility to search automatically for subtitles in opensubtitles.org.
  12. Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....
  13. It's multiplatform. Binaries available for Windows and Linux.
  14. SMPlayer is under the GPL license.

delfin 20030216 is an excellent tool that was specially designed to be a realtime software sampler for Linux. more>>
delfin 20030216 is an excellent tool that was specially designed to be a realtime software sampler for Linux.

Have you ever gone out to find a hardware to create contemporary music (Hip-hop, Jungle, Techno, ...) with considerable price? Did you know that you can use your humble computer to do the same job?

And then a sampler needs lots of memory, so you got to spend more quids upgrading it. The sound quality of delfin and its actual interface doesn't come near that of a real harware sampler, but it might become a full-grown, all-mighty, powerful sea singer.

Instructions:

  • In the delfin directory just type: install.sh
  • This will move the delfin executable to any of your binary paths.

Enhancements: 16-02-2003

  • It has grown a little bit in size, but it is much modular now.
  • The on-line help will be a big surprise for all of you who didn't understand how to work with delfin.
  • Added a test module, Discrete Fourier Transform, that can be used as equalizer.

Requirements:

  • Linux with soundcard
  • ncurses library
  • gcc compiler

Cheese Tracker 0.9.15.1

Cheese Tracker 0.9.15.1

CheeseTracker is a software sampler and step-based sequencer. more>>
CheeseTracker is a software sampler and step-based sequencer. It allows a musician to turn single-note samples into instruments capable of covering three or four octaves (by playing the samples at different speeds, resulting in different pitches). In addition, it is possible to take a collection of samples that are recorded at different octaves, and combine them into a single "instrument," allowing for even more octaves without sampling artifacts.
Using the Pattern Editor, it is possible to compose songs with these instruments that the computer plays automatically. The Pattern Editor allows the user to arrange samples in several independant channels, so that many samples can play simultaneously. These songs, and the samples which comprise their instruments, can be saved together in one-file archives called modules.
CheeseTracker imposes no limits on the length of the samples used. As a result, it can be used as a mixer as well as a sampler/sequencer. Effects such as reverb can be applied to each sample individually, eliminating the need for expensive pedals.
It is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
CheeseTracker is modeled after a DOS-based freeware program called Impulse Tracker (which has been abandonware since the late 1990s). It is mostly compatible with Impulse Tracker, being able to load Impulse Tracker files.
Main features:
- Unlimited sample size
- Keymaps: Build instruments that use a range of samples, just like a hardware sampler.
- LADSPA sound effect filters with near-analog quality
- Built-in effect filters:
- Amplifier
- Reverb
- Stereo Chorus
- Echo
- Equalizers: 6, 10, 21, and 31 bands
- Distortion
- Pitch Shift
- Effect filters can be combined.
- Up to 64 simultaneous voices
- Volume, pan, and pitch envelopes with sustain loop
- Built-in sample editor
- Sample loops with forward and ping-pong modes
- Compatible with JACK, ALSA, and OSS audio architectures
- Most functions are accessible from the keyboard
- Plays samples at different pitches to create notes
- Simulated live musical keyboard (using a QWERTY keyboard) can play alongside programmed songs

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. more>>
KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. Its my hobby-project - just a way to get a better knowledge of KDEs internals.

Besides I wanted to learn programming C++ and since I believe the best way to learn programing is to write a program, I just made my mind to write a multimedia player.

Since it is a player, this word had to be in present in the title. The K and X appered there because of KDE (interface) and XINE (backend).

I took the decision to write a player because I needed one. I needed a good media player for KDE (something like XMMS with KDE inderface), which would be working as reliably as possible.

At present my PC is a 750MHz Duron with 128MB RAM and its almost imposible to work in OpenOffice.org and listen to MP3/OGG at the same time. Running XMMS and OpenOffice 1.x together on my Mandrake results in sound fragmentation.

For some time Ive been using boombox (you can find it in kde-apps). It is based on xine and I found it working better than xmms - almost no fragmentation. Unfortunately boomboxs interface is a bit strange (IMHO) and its not saving the equalizer settings (very annoying).

nwfiir 0s

nwfiir 0s

Nwfiir audio tools is a free suite of console programs for your Unix machine to process high resolution digital audio. more>>
Nwfiir audio tools is a free suite of console programs for your Unix machine (Linux in particular) to process high resolution digital audio. The suites core program is nwfiir, which is a real-time digital equaliser. The name is a combination of the abbrevations FIR, IIR, WFIR and WIIR, that is four types of filters, Finite Impulse Response, Infinite Impulse Response and their warped counterparts. Currently only FIR and WFIR have been implemented in the application
The goal of room equalisation is to have a desired power response in the listening position. The desired response is most often the flat one, that is when all frequencies in the audible range, from 20 - 20000 Hz, are equally amplified. You may own very expensive speakers and amplifiers and so on, that will produce a flat power response, but only if it is placed in an anechoic lab environment. The room have a profound impact on the sound.
To minimise the problems, one can measure the power response in the listening position with a microphone, and with help of that put in a precisely tuned equaliser that minimises the rooms negative impact on the sound. Commercial systems exist for this (Roister, Tact Audio), however they are still very, very expensive. The software presented here is a a full room equalisation system, apart from the hardware which you may well own already anyway.
Enhancements:
- New component: fird, a FIR filter designer, however with no psycho-acoustic stuff yet.
- A quick hack: fconv, a fast convolver, ugly code lack of features and so on, but can be used to demonstrate how much faster fast convolution is than convolution in the time domain (which nwfiir does).
- Fixed some Makefile stuff.

LDRUM is an open-source drummachine that offers ten channels, realtime control, a simple pattern sequencer and a graphical user-interface.
LDrum currently runs under Linux only, it is developed in C++ and uses JACK, Qt, ALSA and LADSPA (its a JAQL app;)
LDRUM uses two homemade libraries called libjackpp and libladspapp. These are included in the LDRUM tarball but might be of interest standalone for somebody. So use the following links below to get some infos and the source.
Main features:
10 stereo channels
- Each channel can play a stereo sample. The sample can be changed while playing. A channel can be triggered by the internal sequencer, the keyboard, MIDI or the GUI simultaneous. You can use your favorite sequencer to trigger LDRUM.
16 voices
- LDRUM is limited to 16 channels to be played simultaneous.
MIDI support
- The LDRUM uses the ALSA sequencer api for triggering channels and controlling parameter via MIDI.
Realtime controlable parameters
- Each channel offers a set of parameters which can be controlled in realtime via MIDI or the graphical user interface. You can assign individual MIDI controllers to each parameter via an easy to use MIDI learn function (just right-click over the parameter).
The following parameters are available:
- mute
