Enlightenment 0.16.8.9
Enlightenment is a window manager for UNIX systems. more>>
The version 0.16 of the Enlightenment window manager was released in 2000, along with its dependencies Imlib and Fnlib, and remains in heavy usage today.
While rumors of its death still circulate, DR16.6 was release on Nov 2nd, 2003, and it remains in development today with a long life still ahead of it. DR16 has been the choice of power users and artists due to its low overhead, highly graphical, widely theme-able, extremely configurable, yet unobtrusive interface.
Nearly all functions of the window manager can be handled without mouse input, including application launching via e16keyedit. It also remains highly portable, with ports avalible for Linux on all platforms, FreeBSD, IRIX, Solaris X86 and Sparc, HP-UX, AIX, OS/2, and more.
Imlib has lived a long life, still in heavy usage today, as one of the most popular image manipulation and rendering libs available. Its development was taken over by the GNOME project and used as GNOMEs rendering engine until it was replaced with GdkPixbuf in GNOME 2.0. Its popularity surpasses just development in C thanks to bindings for several scripting languages including PERL, Python, and Ruby.
The Enlightenment DR16 Window Manager is a robust, flexable, highly configurable, graphically rich yet unobtrusive desktop enviroment for the X11 windowing system. It is fully themable and easily configured. There are a wide range of configuration options to suite any taste. DR16 provides an innovate way of managing applications found no where else, allowing for not only virtual desktops, but also multiple desktops (a seperate set of virtual desktops).
A unique snapshoting pager allows for easy management of application placement and even will zoom on on mouse-over of a window in the pager for easily locating applications. Support exists for up to 32 multiple desktops, and virtual desktops up to 8x8 in size! (Thats 2048 possible desktops!) Standard options such as focus settings and autoraise are extremely configurable to fit your individual tastes.
Several diffrent types of move and resize effects exist, including Opaque, Technical, Box, Shaded, Semi-solid, and Translucent, depending on your preference and CPU requirements. "Remember" settings can be assigned to each window allowing it to be placed and configured just as you want on each startup of the window manager without having to edit any files.
Windows can be individually configured to meet any desire, to change stacking payers, border styles, window size, grouping, tab skip, stickiness, and more. And EESH, the Enlightenment Shell, allows for complete remote control of the window manager and easy scripting.
The menu system is flexable, providing easy access to applications, theme selection, documentation, settings, and background selection. DR16 uniquely allows background selection to be done from the main menu system using thumbnailed views of the background providing a quick and easy way to change wallpaper. In addition, desktop "FX" exist that can add a unique flare, including a ripple effect at the base of your desktop.
A simple group of flat text files allow for easy editing of user appliation menus, including the ability to create hierarchical user menus to suite your various needs. At first startup DR16 will even scan for your KDE and GNOME menus to add an application menu for them.
Standard mouseless features such as tab switching exist, but weve built on even more than that. Virtual desktops can be navigated using the keyboard arrow keys and nearly anything including application launching can be keybound via e16bindings making DR16 an excellent choice for users who want a graphically rich enviroment that doesnt require constant intervention of the mouse.
A built in help system called "eDox" provides an excellent resource for learning the wide variety of diffrent methods of interaction and configuration. Graphical Tool Tips can also be enabled to assist normal usage.
Enlightenment DR16 integrates well with both GNOME and KDE. Replace the default window mangers for each with Enlightenment and youll have the power to leverage the best of GNOME and KDE at the same time, while enjoying the superior windowing interface that Enlightenment provides.
EESH, the Enlightenment Shell, allows for complete remote control of the window manager and easy scripting.
Enlightenment DR16 is highly portable, with binaries avalible for or testing done on all Linux platforms, Solaris X86 and Sparc, HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OS/2 and more.

Loadmeter 1.20
Loadmeter project is a Linux/Solaris system resource monitor that uses very little memory, and is written using raw Xlib. more>>
Loadmeter project is a Linux/Solaris system resource monitor that uses very little memory, and is written using raw Xlib.
It monitors:
- Load average
- Uptime
- Disk usage
- Memory usage
In its normal state it displays a window with a coloured bar graph showing the load average for the past minute. This is also shown in digits at the top of the window. both are updated every second. A red notch marks the maximum load since it was started, and can be reset by pressing button2 or hidden with button3. The blue notch shows the 5 minute load average.
By clicking with button1, a pop-up window appears showing the uptime, the capacity of each filesystem, and memory/swap usage. More detailed info on each filesystem is available by highlighting the corresponding one. The way this window pops down is intentional, just to make it interesting.
Any filesystems with higher usage than specified by the -warn option (default 90%) are shown with a (default)green background. The -disk option can also be used as an instant warn feature.
Press Escape in the top level window to exit.
Loadmeter also has the ability to override window managers. Giving the option -override causes the top-level window to have the override_redirect bit set. This is useful for window managers that insist upon decorating standard clients (eg Enlightenment, at least up to DR0.9). If youve given this option, then you can still resize and move the window. During moving and resizing, the cursor displays the geometry.
Ctrl-button1 lowers the window.
Ctrl-button2 raises and moves the window.
Ctrl-button3 raises and resizes the window.
A SIGUSR1 sent to the process will also raise the top level window.
There is also a -parent switch, which can be used to specify another window (in decimal or hex form) to use as the parent for the toplevel one (default is the root). This is useful for banking several together inside another window for easy positioning, etc. The lower function doesnt work if -parent is specified. Also note that you cant use both -override and -parent at the same time.
Command-line options:
-disp < display> Specify which X server to connect to
-geom < +x+y> Specify position on the screen
-sync Call sync() when checking disk usage
-numfont < font> Use for the load digits
-labelfont < font> Use for the hostname label
-popupfont < font> Use for the cursor and popup window
-popupbg < colour> Use for the popup background
-popupfg < colour> Use for the foreground of the popup
-warnbg < colour> Use for the high disk usage warning colour
-meter < colour> Use for the disk usage meter bar
-warn < pct> Min percent capacity reqd to highlight a filesystem
-label < label> Bargraph label to use instead of the hostname
-name < name> Name of the app to present to the WM
-bh < blockheight> Height of individual bargraph blocks (in pixels)
-override Always override window manager
-parent < window> Use as the parent for the toplevel window
-noshrink Dont do fancy popup window shrinking
-disk Show a warning when disk usage exceeds -warn value
-nogeom Disables displaying the window geometry in the cursor whilst moving/resizing the main window.

Olive LiveCD 0.2
Olive is (yet another) GNU/Linux Live distribution. more>>
Olive is (yet another) GNU/Linux Live distribution. Olive LiveCD distirbution offers quite a good deal of new technologies, hardly witnessed ever before, as well as some of the more common pieces of software. Its size is approx. 110MiB, yet it allows a lot of software to be used.
Olives whole point is to display how easy to use Linux may be, yet without losing any of the features required for heavy-duty work. Its also supposed to show various unusual new technologies, not widely known or accepted.
Please note that Olive was, partially, built as graduation work at SPSST Panska. Once presented, a release built specifically for school will be available upon personal request.
Main features:
Media
Olive features MPlayer for playing of your favourite movies. It plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, OGG/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, Matroska files. You can also watch Theora, MPEG4 (DivX/XviD), Real Media, DVD, VideoCD, SVCD movies. MPlayer also supports various filters for better experience. Mencoder is bundled with MPlayer and it allows you to encode movies into virtually any of the formats mentioned above.
Although you can use MPlayer to play your music, theres also an application that was written just for that: Audacious. Audacious is a fork of Beep Media Player (now discontinued), which is in turn fork of the very famous XMMS. It supports various audio formats, including MPEG layer 1, 2, and 3, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg FLAC, Musepack, WAV files and Windows Media, as well as many sequenced formats including MIDI, and a host of different module formats. In addition, Audacious uses Winamp-like skins (and supports Winamp "classic" skins), to provide a familiar and friendly user interface.
You can of course view photos and pictures using GQview, an intuitive image browser. It can generate thumbnails of your pictures, its capable of reading EXIF metadata, has advanced image search function and much more.
Internet
The Internet is part of everyday life for all of us; was it not for the Internet, you wouldnt be able to read this webpage. Olive features Mozilla Firefox web browser, currently the most common web browser used on Linux. For browsing in console, ELinks is a must-have. There is also Sylpheed e-mail client, small, fast and incredibly useful.
These days, Instant Messaging is a common part of our lives. Therefore, Olive sports GAIM2 (beta2) multi-protocol instant messaging client, which is compatibile with protocols such as ICQ, MSN Messenger,Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber or Gadu-Gadu. There is also a client dedicated solely to Internet Relay Chat (IRC), which is X-Chat. As usually, there are console alternatives, which would be CenterICQ and irssi.
You can use Kismet to look for Wi-Fi hotspots. Basic utilities such as telnet or ssh client and server (Dropbear, used in various embedded systems) are not missing as well.
General work
You can perform some elementary office work in Olive as well. Although its obvious that you wont be doing most of your office work on Olive, its quite reasonable to believe it can come in handy. Therefore, Olive has AbiWord word processor to allow you to read and write documents, in various languages, in various characters, without any problem.
AbiWord can also handle various document formats, which includes Microsoft Word or WordPerfect documents. You can also export your documents into HTML for further processing or publication. You can also read Adobe PDF format using Evince, a Gnome/GTK2 document viewer whose PDF backend is based on the Poppler library, which is based on the well-known XPDF. Utilities that allow you export of PDF documents into eg. HTML are also included.
System control
Considering the differences in approach to configuration in various distributions, it may be often hard to configure several things at yet another distribution, such as the X server or preferences of software alternatives. Therefore, Olive features a trivial control panel, allowing any application to be merged in as a new panel. Although it still misses few more desired panels (most notable for network configuration), it already is quite useful for every day usage.
Eye candy
Good-looking environment always helps users to better orientate on the workplace, as well as consider the time they spend with the system more enjoyable. Transparency can be achieved using XComposite extension and xcompmgr + transset.
Though XGL and AIGLX were considered, the decision was made not to use them for their lack of testing and for the demand for support of as many platforms as possible. Please note that even XComposite may have its own issues with other software, most notably Enlightenment and MPlayer, and for this reason xcompmgr is not run by default.
Lightweight
If you consider the above features way too much for you and strive for something lighter, then you can use the FluxBox window manager. FluxBox was finetuned to look and feel as much as Enlightenment as possible, making the transition simple. There are also lightweight versions of some of the software, as mentioned above, such as irssi, CenterICQ or ELinks.
Enhancements:
- A significant bug was found in v0.1, causing ramdisk for people who have 1GiB of RAM or more broken. Please, upgrade to 0.2.

Panda PDF Generator 0.5.4
Panda PDF Generator is a PDF generator in the form of a C library. more>>
Panda is a PDF generation API written in C.
The Panda PDF Generator is intended to make PDFs on the fly for the Web, but may be used to generate any PDF document you want.
Enhancements:
- As you may already be aware, the most important change in 0.5.4 is that the library is now available under the terms of either the GPL or LGPL (your choice). In order to accomplish this, the TDB code was removed, and either Enlightenment DB or Berkeley DB (version 4) must be linked to in its place.
- Other changes include the addition of link annotations (internal and external), pkg-config support, and an RPM. The main point of this release, however, was the licensing issue.

Template::Library::HTML 2.15
Template::Library::HTML is a template library for building basic HTML pages. more>>
Template::Library::HTML is a template library for building basic HTML pages.
NOTE: This documentation is incomplete and may be incorrect in places. The html template library is distributed as part of the Template Toolkit. It can be found in the templates sub-directory of the installation directory.
use Template;
my $tt2 = Template->new({
INCLUDE_PATH => /usr/local/tt2/templates,
});
For a portable way to determine the installation templates directory, you can use the Template::Config->instdir() class method.
use Template;
my $tt2 = Template->new({
INCLUDE_PATH => Template::Config->instdir(templates),
});
You should now be able to access the html library as, for example:
[% INCLUDE html/header %]
Note that some of the more basic elements dont give you much more than the raw HTML tags. In many cases you might be well advised to stick to regular HTML rather than complicating matters by the use of template elements.
e.g.
< table >
. . .
< /table >
vs
[% WRAPPER html/table %]
. . .
[% END %]
However, the use of template elements to generate the underlying HTML does have some important benefits, particularly as the constructs start to get more complicated and more magical.
See the example in the examples sub-directory of the distribution directory for further examples and enlightenment on using this library.

JackLab Audio Distribution 1.0 RC2
JackLab Audio Distribution is a remastered openSUSE for musicians, producers and media creators. more>>
JackLab Audio Distribution is a remastered openSUSE for musicians, producers and media creators.
The JackLab Team is proud to present the first public alpha-release of the JackLab Audio Distribution (JAD). The 1.2GB DVD iso can be downloaded from jacklab.org.
We have found that musicians have particular requirements for their Linux environment. A Linux-based distribution that is designed for music needs to be flexible, powerful, yet easy and quick to use. All of these things are essential in a busy, creative environment. Thinking about these requirements, we decided to base JAD on openSUSE due to its stability and long development history. All major administrative tasks can be done graphically and easily without having to learn any complicated terminal commands.
JAD will be fully compatible with the recently released openSUSE 10.2. It will contain a full production environment for media production, primarily music. For this, the JackLab team added a Realtime Kernel version 2.6.19 to have fast audio processing with a latency up to 1.5ms. The default audio system will be based on the the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK) which is designed for the needs of musicians and producers and gives a professional audio/midi controlling interface.
The installer is based on the acclaimed YaST2, which also serves as an easy-to-use administrative tool. To keep as many essential computer resources for music as possible, we have decided to use Enlightenment D17 desktop shell as the default window manager. KDE desktop environment is also included, so the user-friendly file manager - Konqueror, is available along with Kmail, Konversation, k3b and other KDE tools. For music creation and editing, we have included around 70 audio applications with sequencers, synthesizers and tools all installed and ready to go. User-friendly support for setting up and running VST instruments and effects is given. Additionally, there are applications for video production and a graphic suite that are included on the DVD. For browsing the internet, we have included Firefox 2.0 chosen for its stability, security and extendability.
JAD is a community based effort and is the culmination of the work of many contributors. Recently, JackLab and PackMan (packman.links2linux.de) have joined forces to offer JAD access to the PackMan repositories so that up-to-date audio software, non-audio software and multimedia codecs are available to JAD users. The JAD development team would like you to participate in the development process too. There are different ways you can help:
-As a tester, you can download the most recent version and use the bugtracker to report any problems.
-You can participate in the graphics contest: The best graphics submitted will be used as default for the bootscreen, wallpaper, skins and icons.
-You can submit feature requests and take part in discussions on the mailing list.
-For taking part in providing user support, there is a web based forum and an IRC channel - it is also an essential part of the development process to see feedback.

zimwm 0.0.5
zimwm is the window manager of the zde project. more>>
Zeta Desktop Environment (ZDE) is an X11 window manager and tools with enhanced usability and features for developers and advanced users.
Some of its current sub-projects include imp, a library of core functions such as linked lists, zwl, a simple widget toolkit and light X11 wrapper, and zimwm, the window manager.
zimwm is the window manager of the zde project. Planned features include vi and emacs style keybindings, a command-line interface with shell-like capabilities to control zimwm in real time, and dynamically-generated menus and thumbnails for iconified windows and the pager. This means using new technologies such as XRender, the Composite extension, cairo, and the freedesktop.org standards in order to provide the best possible experience.
Inspiration was obtained from (in no particular order) Ion, lwm,
Enlightenment DR16 and DR17, ratpoison, awm, waimea, ewm, failsafewm, heliwm,
jwm, mosquito, nwm, pawm, phluid, swm, uwm, wmii, pekwm, xswm, fluxbox,
openbox, any other box, sawfish, metacity, kwin, xfwm4, twm, icewm, and fvwm.
I tried really hard to like you guys, but you all fell short in at least one
critical area. But dont worry, Im stealing some of your best ideas and
combining them with my own into zimwm.
Enhancements:
- This release adds support for virtual workspaces/desktops and loadable modules.
