cereal emulation framework 0.93.5

cereal emulation framework 0.93.5

cereal emulation framework is an easily-extensible 8051 emulator. more>>
cereal is an emulation framework designed to allow easy emulation of interconnected modules. Its main component is an 8051 emulator module, so it can be used as an 8051 emulator.

The reason for writing cereal was an 8051 embedded controller which should control an engine using pulse-width modulation, read the resulting flow from a flowmeter, and regulate the output to keep flow at a given value.

In the real world, it takes about two seconds for the algorithm to stabilize, and emulating two seconds using conventional emulators (computing the engine input, the real flow, the feedback frequency) by hand is simply impossible to do.

Using cereal, it took about two hours to create a module emulating the engine/flowmeter combination, along with a window showing the current values. Then it is trivial to connect this module to the 8051 module and just sit back and watch the result.

Another, more trivial example is a multiplexed display/keyboard combination (in my case, selecting one of four 8-segment LCD displays). Instead of watching the port bits, why not create a module that shows the output graphically as four displays?

In addition to these possibilities, cereal offers breakpoints, watches, evaluate/modify dialog (which can solve 2 * x + 1 = 5). The KDE GUI also can be extended using KParts (8051 interface is provided as a KParts plugin).

Also included is a command interface usable for creating testsuites for your programs (or for cereal itself - cereal has over 400 tests in its testsuite), and a simple 8051 disassembler.

Flash for Linux 0.2.1

Flash for Linux 0.2.1

Flash for Linux is a SWF editor for Linux. more>>
Flash for Linux project is a development environment for Macromedia Flash, a format widely used for web applications and vector animation.
F4L is in such early stages of design that it is not recommended for use by people without knowlege of C++, QT, Ming, etc.
F4L is a clone, or imitation, of a Macromedia, Inc. product called Flash. The most current version of Flash is MX 2004. Flash is designed to help people make programs that can be used on any computer and that can be distributed over the Internet.
Flash can even be easily included in a web page. Most browsers include a plug-in that allows users to view Flash content in web pages. If you do not have this plug-in, you may wish to visit http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ to get it for Mozilla (or compatible), Opera, Internet Explorer, AOL, OS X, OS 9, Pocket PC, OS/2, Irix, Solaris, or HP-UX for free.
Flash offers easy development of professional applications. Flash development is based mostly on a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Through the GUI, a developer can draw their application on the screen. Drawings can be converted to animations, buttons, and other features with the development environments menus and dialog boxes.
Competing methods of development, such as C++, Java or JavaScript, require technical knowledge of a special programming language and mathematics. A Flash applications GUI features are extremely limited compared to a programming language based project. To compensate for this weakness, Macromedia added Action Scripts to Flash.
Action Scripts are a sort of programming language, but there are only a few commands to learn, and they are selected off a menu. Action Scripting is equivalent to programming a graphing calculator with BASIC; it should not take you more than a few days to learn, if you have the patience to read boring instructions.
While Flash can be developed with very few Action Scripts, the scripts add to the interactivity of the application. Most web sites using Flash do not use Action Scripts intensively, with the exception of games. Flash can also work with JavaScript.
Enhancements:
- The program can now export simple objects like images, lines, rectangles, ovals (ellipses), and text.
- The "locate" command is used to find the TrueType font files needed for text.

Wide Area Link Emulator 0.1

Wide Area Link Emulator 0.1

Wide Area Link Emulator enables you to set and test various parameters of a WAN access link more>>
Wide Area Link Emulator enables you to set and test various parameters of a WAN access link (also known as a bottleneck link) before testing on a fully-functional network.

Any ISP has a high bandwidth LAN (of the order of tens of Mbps, e.g. Ethernet) and a WAN access link with relatively low speeds (of the order of a few Kbps to a few Mbps). To be able to evaluate the ISPs performance, actual tests will have to be conducted on a live, fully functional network. This would imply enabling certain features in communication equipment which could be detrimental to the proper functioning of a commissioned network. To address such a problem of being able to characterize/quantify the network operation in terms of its performance with respect to various parameters, a test-bed emulating the ISPs connectivity to the Internet would be an ideal solution.

An important factor in setting up such a test-bed, is emulating the WAN Access Link. Using complex hardware is costly. Such a link can however be easily implemented by emulating the scenario on popular physical technology such as Ethernet. By changing the TCP/IP stack on a Personal Computer, the rate at which packets are injected into the network can be controlled and other necessary features can easily be added.

WALE was implemented in 2 phases and the first version can emulated bandwidths up to 8Mbps and uses FIFO queues with drop-tail.

WALE v2 can emulate bandwidths of up to 80Mbps(a 10-fold improvement over version 1) due to the stripped down version of Micro-second resolution timer being used in the Linux kernel. WALE also implements differentiated services are recommended by IETF. A hash-based packet classifier is used to classify packets into one of 3 queues (Expedited Forwarding, Assured Forwarding and Best Effort). A simple priority scheduling has been implemented between the queues.

Version 2 has been implemented in the Generic Device Layer of the Linux Kernel. The kernel version is 2.2.19. WALE2 kernel patch can be downloaded here. An ncurses based front end has been implemented for setting and viewing various parameters of the bottleneck link.

VT6530 Terminal Emulator 0.2

VT6530 Terminal Emulator 0.2

VT6530 is a Java implementation of the proprietary terminal used with Tandem mainframes. more>>
VT6530 Terminal Emulator is a Java implementation of the proprietary terminal used with Tandem mainframes.
The Tandem VT6530 is a proprietary terminal used with their Non-Stop(TM) series of mainframes. These high-reliability machines are popular in the banking industry. If youve ever used an ATM to get cash, youve probably used a VT6530.
The terminal itself can operate in three different mode: conversation, block, and ANSI (VT100). Conversation mode is a simple scrolling text mode with the addition key buffering and text attributes. In block mode, text is displayed in a formated screen with special edit fields. ANSI mode is only used with OSS, Tandems UNIX wanabe operating layer.
Enhancements:
- Autotools support (./configure, make, make check, and make install).
- New telnet and ANSI terminal implementations.
- Linux, Cygwin, and HP NonStop (tandem OSS) builds are not quite running yet.

Pocket Linux 2.51

Pocket Linux 2.51

Pocket Linux is an almost minimal, one floppy linux system designed to quickly convert PC workstation into a secure linux. more>>
Pocket Linux is an almost minimal, one floppy linux system designed to quickly convert PC workstation into secure linux-based workstation using ssh to connect to remote host (other networking clients are also supported).
It supports bootp for determining host IP and other network parameters (theres also manual configuration possible, but bootp is recommended).
In addition to workstations equipped with a network card (ethernet or arcnet), you can also use Pocket Linux on a PC equipped with a modem. Modem is automatically detected and then PPP connection is made.
The idea came up some time in 1996 or so. The distribution then was not perfect, but still it shown it was a great idea. It wasnt maintained for about year or so, until I took it up again in the early January 1998. After a complete rebuild Pocket Linux 2.00 was released. It soon gained a huge number of happy users, whose ideas helped its development.
The aim is to provide a small and efficient workstation that autoconfigures as much as possible and lets securely use the network from almost everywhere.
Current version is a nice attempt and future ones will enhance the automation and support for various network equipment and protocols, becoming a total solution. Future plans also include side projects like one floppy router.
In order to understand some of the config options its useful to know something about operations that are done during bootup (in order to automatically configure the network). These are, in order (the later attempts are made if the earlier ones dont set-up the network):
- attempt to setup the network using BOOTP
- attempt to reuse previous manual configuration
- modem detection
- attempt to setup modem conection
Most of the config options switches these operations on and off.
Main menu
You can choose the following network configuration commands from the main menu (only the ones that make sense in the present context are displayed):
- Options - allows setting few binary parameters controlling automatic network configuration and modem handling.
- BOOTP query - attempts to configure network (ethernet or arcnet) using BOOTP. Normally its automatically done during bootup, but this can be switched off.
- Manual configuration - allows manual setting of network configuration parameters (ethernet or arcnet).
- Detect modem - detects serial port the modem is on and its parameters (transfer rate, initialization commands).
- Dial PPP using predefined configuration - creates modem connection (PPP) using one of (up to ten) remembered configurations. By default only TPSA (0202122) configuration is remembered.
- Dial PPP using new configuration - creates new PPP configuration and sets up a modem connection using the newly created config.
- Disconnect PPP - disconnects modem connection.
- Mount /usr via NFS - mounts remote /usr filesystem via NFS. It will be automatically mounted during each Pocket Linux bootup if its turned on in configuration options.
- Exit - Do not config the network - exits the program without configuring the network.
Configuration options
There are following options available:
- Probe network with BOOTP - switches automatic BOOTP probing during bootup on and off. On by default.
- Reuse manual network configs - if on, an attempt is made to restore network configuration during bootup. Netconf remembers 10 most recent manual configurations along with network cards MAC addresses. If cards MAC address matches one of the remembered ones, assigned configuration is used. On by default.
- Automatically setup PPP - switches automatic attempt to create modem connection during bootup on and off. Its made with the first config on PPP configs list. On by default.
- Reuse modem configuration - if on, modem detection is not performed during bootup - instead most recently used modem configuration is used. Off by default.
- Pulse dialing - switches dialing mode used for modem connections between tone dialing (DTMF) and pulse dialing. Default is off (that is tone dialing).
- Automount disk partitions - switches on and off automatical disk partitions mounting (ext2 and vfat filesystems) and swap partition activation during bootup. On by default.
- Add swap file if low memory - switches on and off automatical swap file creation during bootup. Swap file is created if, and only if, theres less than 16 MB memory available (including potentially activated swap partitions) and theres a disk partition on which it could be created available. On by default.
- Automount NFS /usr - switches on and off /usr filestem mounting via NFS during bootup. NFS path to the filestem must be set using "Mount /usr filesystem via NFS" command in main menu. Off by default.
Manual network card configuration
You can enter network configuration parameters in this window:
- This machines IP - enter IP number for this computer here
- Network mask - enter netmask here. If omitted, mask will be calculated based on IP (which will not necessarily be right).
- Broadcast address - enter network broadcast address here. If omitted broadcast address will be calculated based on IP (not mask! - which will not necessarily be right).
- Default gateway - enter IP address of default network gateway (router) here.
- Nameserver IP(s) - enter one or more (separated by spaces) name servers IP addresses here. Can be omitted, but then domain names couldnt be used.
- Default domain(s) - you can enter one or more (separated by spaces) domain names to search host if incomplete domain names will be used. Its optional.
PPP configuration
You can enter modem connection configuration parameters in this window:
- Config name - config name (used in existing configuration selection menu).
- Phone number - phone number to dial (eg. 0w202122 for TPSA access modems).
- Username - username to send to remote server
- Password - password to send to remote server
- Nameserver IP(s) - enter one or more (separated by spaces) name servers IP addresses here. Can be omitted, but then domain names couldnt be used.
- Default domain(s) - you can enter one or more (separated by spaces) domain names to search host if incomplete domain names will be used. Its optional.
Because of permanent configuration that is kept on the floppy you should remember to:
- dont write protect the floppy
- dont remove the floppy from the drive (at least during network configuration)
Enhancements:
- bugfixes in netconf reuse code
- disk partitions automounting, swap partitions autoactivating
- automatic swap file creation
- extended support for NFS mountable /usr
- PS/2 mouse support
- new startup logo
