Emacs Chess 2.0b6
Emacs Chess is an object-oriented library written in Elisp for manipulating chess objects (games, plies, positions, etc.), and f more>>
Emacs Chess is an object-oriented library written in Elisp for manipulating chess objects (games, plies, positions, etc.), and for displaying them.
Main features:
- Emacs Chess is also an object-oriented library for manipulating chess objects (games, plies, positions, etc), and for displaying them. It supports a wide range of engine objects to use as move sources. This what allows chess.el to act as a chess client.
- chess-announce.el announces your opponents moves verbally, such as "knight takes at f4"provided you have "festival" installed.
- chess-sound.el is similar to chess-announce, but uses specific WAV files for each sound used. It takes up much more disk space, but is nicer to listen to. Available in English only at the moment.
- chess-irc.el provides a tiny IRC bot, allowing you to play games over IRC so long as your opponent enters moves in short algebraic notation. If they dont have chess.el, all they need is a regular chessboard, and a knowledge of SAN (short alegebraic notation).
- chess-ics.el lets you to play on Internet Chess Servers, using chess.el as your chessboard display (which means chess-announce works with it, etc). It has only been tested with FICS so far.
- chess-crafty.el, chess-gnuchess.el and chess-phalanx.el let you play against the Crafty, Gnuchess and Phalanx engines.
- chess-random.el will create Fischer Random positions to play against. Note that this feature only really works against opponents who are also using chess.el. Simply type "S" in the chessboard display buffer to setup a Fischer Random starting position.
- chess-network.el lets you play against other chess.el users directly, over a single open port on the server side. To be a server, you must have "netcat" installed, or be using Emacs 21.3 or higher (which supports server side network sockets). To be a client, all you need is Emacs 21.1 or higher.
- chess-link.el lets you tie two engines together, so that events from one are responded to by events from another. This can let you run a chess bot on your computer over any of the transport, or you can use it to pit two computer chess engines against each other.
- chess.el can even export chessboard display to other X servers, allowing you to play against people in your meeting room, even if they dont have Emacs installed!
Enhancements:
- This maintenance release includes several bugfixes.

WWW::Mechanize::Examples 1.30
WWW::Mechanize::Examples is a Perl module with sample programs that use WWW::Mechanize. more>>
SYNOPSIS
Plenty of people have learned WWW::Mechanize, and now, you can too!
Following are user-supplied samples of WWW::Mechanize in action.
You can also look at the t/*.t files in the distribution.
Please note that these examples are not intended to do any specific task. For all I know, theyre no longer functional because the sites they hit have changed. Theyre here to give examples of how people have used WWW::Mechanize.
Note that the examples are in reverse order of my having received them, so the freshest examples are always at the top.
Starbucks Density Calculator, by Nat Torkington
Heres a pair of scripts from Nat Torkington, editor for OReilly Media and co-author of the Perl Cookbook.
Rael [Dornfest] discovered that you can easily find out how many Starbucks there are in an area by searching for "Starbucks". So I wrote a silly scraper for some old census data and came up with some Starbucks density figures. Theres no meaning to these numbers thanks to errors from using old census data coupled with false positives in Yahoo search (e.g., "Dodie Starbuck-Your Style Desgn" in Portland OR). But it was fun to waste a night on.
Here are the top twenty cities in descending order of population, with the amount of territory each Starbucks has. E.g., A New York NY Starbucks covers 1.7 square miles of ground.

Namazu 2.0.14
Namazu is a full text retrieval search system. more>>
Namazu is a full-text search engine. Namazu uses the index maker mknmz command and the text searcher namazu command.
For quickly searching through many documents, Namazu generates an index similar to that of a books.
mknmz command compiles the index. The target directory for indexing is given as an argument for mknmz. For example, if the target directory is /home/foo/public_html, then type
% mknmz /home/foo/public_html
Now documents such as *.html and *.txt under /home/foo/public_html are indexed and NMZ.* files are created in the directory where you run mknmz. NMZ.* files are from Namazus index.
The namazu command searches the index. For example:
% namazu bar /home/foo/Namazu/foobar
The above searches a keyword "bar" for the index under /home/foo/Namazu/bar.
For searching a great amount of documents quickly, Namazu makes an index in advance. The concept of index is just similar to an index of book.
Namazu is being developed by Namazu Project. Namazu will work on UNIX, Win32 and OS/2 environments. For Win32, you can find Namazu for Win32: a Full-Text Search Engine page. For OS/2, OS/2 port of Namazu a full text retrieval search system is maintained by Shimizu-san. Each page provides binary package also.
Not only with cgi interface of Web, it works on command line as namazu. Other frontends are also available from other sources, such as namazu.el and Wanderlust on Emacs, Tknamazu on X Window System and Search-S on Win32.
Filters enable namazu to index various formats of files. Mail/News filter works with no additives, some other type requires third parties filter executable although the calling capabilites included in Namazu package.

SMSTerm 0.6.1
SMSTerm is an application that uses the ICQ2000 protocol. more>>
SMSTerm is an application that uses the ICQ2000 protocol to present you a shell on your mobile phone which allows you to interact with your computer from any mobile on a GSM network. It runs a shell on a pty, and allows you to directly send commands to the shell through SMS. Minimal authentication is done over SMS before spawning a shell and offering it to the user on the mobile phone. It is very useful for remote administration tasks, or checking out the status of the network, or just to run some small chores on your system while you are away. It uses Expect.pm in the background. SMSTerm also includes a script to send SMS through the ICQ network from the command line to any GSM mobile, and also includes a PHP script to set up a Web->SMS gateway.
This is a simple perl script to allow all you people out there who cannot live without having a peek at what your box at home has to say, when you are on the move. All you need is a GSM mobile, and an ICQ account. An ICQ account is required because it is used as the
underlying protocol in SMSTerm to transfer/recieve SMSs.
Yoy can use this application to contact systems behind NATs, as the kernel ships with kernel modules to allow ICQ to be masqd reliably. It is a good way to telnet into your system, which maybe behind a firewall, and do some chores, when youre halfway accross the globe
Enhancements:
- included the new vICQ.pm version 1.10: the earlier version had some serious bugs in receiving SMS which prevented SMSTerm from working at all. I released SMSTerm 0.6 in a hurry during my exams so I couldnt test it thoroughly. Apologies to everyone who couldnt get it to work. This time everything is tested and tried, and it works.
-
- delay modified: the default delay time has been increased from 10s to 20s in SMSTerm. This is because ICQ was giving me RATE_LIMIT errors if i set it too low. Anyone who get a RATE_LIMIT can try bumping it somemore.

A moderately strong chess engine is included: Dreamer. However, should this engine be too weak for you, then you can use any other XBoard-compatible chess engine, including the popular Crafty and GNU Chess.
Other features include on-screen move lists using SAN notation, undo functionality, and savegames in PGN format. In future releases we plan to add support for time controls, audio, network play, more visual effects such as reflections and shadows, and 3D animated pieces.
Enhancements:
- 3D OpenGL user interface (XBoard-compatible).
- A variety of chess sets, including classic wooden and flat figurines.
- Moderately strong chess engine.
- Savegames in PGN format.

OpenGrade 2.7.15
OpenGrade is software for teachers to keep track of grades. more>>
OpenGrade is software for teachers to keep track of grades. OpenGrade can put the students grade reports on a Web server and allow the students password-protected access to them.
Main features:
- A variety of reports can be created.
- Grades can be uploaded to a web server, where students can have password-protected access to them.
- If you use a set grading scale, you can have the software use it to compute letter grades automatically.
- Grades can be based on total points, or on a weighted average of scores in various categories such as exams and quizzes.
- You can drop the lowest grade (or the N lowest grades) from a given category.
- Students can be dropped and later reinstated without losing all their grades.
- There is support for extra-credit categories, and for categories that dont count towards the students grade.
- Gradebook files are password-protected with a digital watermark, so you can detect tampering.
- Gradebook files are in a plain-text format, which makes it easy to work with them using Unix utilities.
You might also want to check out Ggradebook and Grades, which are two other open-source programs along similar lines. There is a category for this kind of software on Open Directory.
OpenGrade is designed to cooperate with my software Spotter. By using the two pieces of software together, you can post grade reports on the web, keep track of your students e-mail addresses, and collect certain kinds of work from them online.
Enhancements:
- This version correctly recognizes Perl/Tk 804.027 as being compatible with itself, rather than insisting on 804.029 or higher.
