Free educational software for linux

GioveLUG Educational is a custom distro based on PuppyLinux 2.11. This is my first distro and with my LUG we delivered it to a kids fun house to let the kids learning computer loving free software.

Basically, this distro is a Puppy 2.11 with other kids software installed such as:

- TuxType2
- TuxMath
- GCompris
- SuperTux
- TuxPaint

I also installed a couple of dotpup packages such as the following:

- Vnc with GUI (by Rarsa)
- MU Translate Menu (by Mark Ulrich)

GioveLUG educational has also following libraries installed on:

Into the directory usr/share/backgrounds you can find some wallpaper for your desktop.

It is very simple to translate menu in italian if you like it, just use MU translation program with the file it.lng you can find onto Localization forum.

Foundational Physics project is a 2D physics engine written in Java for entertainment and educational purposes.

With a robust groundwork, its aim is to provide an easy interface for programmers to easily and creatively manipulate a Newtonian physics environment.

Scriptio project is an open source framework for presenting animations and educational content in a rich online experience.
Featuring an easy-to-learn scripting language for fast prototyping and production-quality development, Scriptio is designed for rich Web 2.0 applications.
Scriptio is written in JavaScript, and exploits Ajax techniques. Ajax refers to tools and methods for creating interactive web applications. If accompanying narration or sound is needed, interfaces to Flash, QuickTime, and standard audio formats are supported.
Main features:
Intuitive scripting language
- The scripting language is a simple and easy to understand. It can also be extended since it is built in JavaScript.
Rich object set
- Text, images, rectangles, lines, and circles are supported. Input controls such as buttons, text entry fields, radio buttons, and checkboxes are used for created highly-interactive instructional presentations.
Multiple audio options
- If you need a music or narration soundtrack, interfaces for QuickTime and Flash are included. A Java applet that supports audio formats of Ogg, AU, and WAV has also been developed.
Authoring Tools
- An "author mode" gives valuable feedback as you work and develop your scripts.

QScintilla project is a port to Qt of Neil Hodgsons Scintilla C++ editor class.
As well as features found in standard text editing components, QScintilla includes features especially useful when editing and debugging source code.
These include support for syntax styling, error indicators, code completion and call tips. The selection margin can contain markers like those used in debuggers to indicate breakpoints and the current line.
Styling choices are more open than with many editors, allowing the use of proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colours and multiple fonts.
QScintilla is licensed under the GNU GPL (for UNIX/Linux and MacOS/X), under the Qt Educational License (for use with the educational edition of Qt for Windows), and under a commercial license (for UNIX/Linux, MacOS/X and Windows).
At the moment the commercial version of QScintilla is bundled with the commercial version of PyQt. You can purchase it here.
Note that the educational edition is for educational institutions and not individual students.
QScintilla is provided in source form as a .tar.gz package for UNIX/Linux and MacOS/X, and a .zip package for Windows.
Enhancements:
- Lexers now remember their own style settings and so no longer need to be the current lexer for style changes to take effect.

CTris its mainly a tetris clone made by me for educational purposes, you can try to
have a look at the code but unfortunately its terribly messy and with few comments.

If you want to compile it from the sources you will need the DUMB libraries.

Linux-EduCD is a Polish live DVD based on KANOTIX, with focus on education, graphics, office, multimedia and software development.
Main features:
- addition of the Compiz desktop;
- integration of GParted into the hard disk installer;
- new boot options;
- Linux kernel 2.6.18 with extra drivers and modules;
- KDE 3.5.5;
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4;
- a range of educational software (Celestia, OpenDX, PyMOL, Rasmol, DrGeo, Yacas); multimedia applications (GIMP 2.2.13, Blender 2.42, Amarok, Audacity, Xine); network and system administration software (Wireshark, Nessus, Iptraf, EtherApe, Cheops);
- new development packages (DrScheme, Ruby, VisualPython, GPS, GNAT, Glade)

Edukalibre Collab package is a useful Web interface to the Edukalibre platform.

Its a system to create collaborative educational material with additional functionality such as automatic conversion of documents, history of documents, etc.

This interface allows users to perform the most common tasks over the system using a Web browser, such as upload or update a document, review the history of a document, view the converted formats, edition online of a document, etc.
