Monalo Toolbar is a Firefox extension that shows RSS feed headlines directly in the toolbar and more... more>>
Monalo Toolbar Firefox extension lets you:

1) Show RSS feed headlines directly in the toolbar with a slick fade-in effect. You can also select from a list of topics (i.e. Technology, Video Gaming, Star Wars) to get headlines from feeds relating to the chosen topic.
2) Be notified when there are updates to RSS feeds you wish to monitor.
3) Share links with friends/family/the world.

There are many other features, such as the ability to create your own topic-based "channel" (with RSS) from a mashup of related RSS feeds. So, for example, you could create an "IT Podcasts" channel which would display all the latest (and most popular) IT podcasts from around the web.

The rest is left for you to discover.

rip-utils 0.2.1

rip-utils 0.2.1

rip-utils is a command line toolkit for ripping, encoding, tagging, organizing, compiling, and managing audio archives. more>>
rip-utils is a command line toolkit for ripping, encoding, tagging, organizing, compiling, and managing audio archives. Each utility participates in a common framework that allows commodity tools (such as file browsers, multimedia players and streaming servers) to access your digital catalog simply and effectively.

rip

A single command (tuned for optimal quality using cdparanoia and LAME) drives the ripping, encoding and tagging process from end to end:

% ru rip

No further intervention will be necessary. Each track will be extracted from the compact disc, encoded, tagged (using album information obtained from a freedb server) and filed in a sensible location (~/mp3 by default).

list, tag, diff and submit

For those of us who want to exercise some editorial control, rip-utils also provides powerful support for retrieving, modifying, comparing and submitting album information using freedb servers. In addition to supporting standard editing features based on freedb naming conventions, rip-utils offers convenient methods for performing otherwise tedious tasks such as tagging multi-artist compilations or properly capitalizing album and track information; when maximum flexibility is required, regular expressions can be used. For a detailed example, see:

ru tag + cddb read misc 710ef109

organize and compile

Furthermore, rip-utils uses portable mechanisms to organize your entire audio collection. You can use rip-utils to create file system-based categories or to compile standard Internet playlists. Every file created or managed by rip-utils can be easily used – without modification – by most multimedia players, streaming servers (such as the one provided with the SliMP3 Player) and operating systems that might access your recordings using a shared file system (e.g., Samba). At the same time, every effort is made to ensure that each file name and path is legibly formatted so that humans are able glean as much from the file system as their software:

TopicEngine 1.19

TopicEngine 1.19

TopicEngine is an advanced topic management script for eggdrop bots. more>>
TopicEngine is an advanced topic management script for eggdrop bots. Its features are: fine-grained access permissions, multiple channels, shortcuts to commands, intelligent topic handling, learning, locking, and more.

Commands can be executed via public message (using !topic in a channel), query (/msg botnick topic #channel, or on the partyline (.topic #channel).

Wont change the topic if it would make it go over the maximum topic length for the network
Access can be limit by bot flags per channel or globally, and by IRC status (+o,+v). Users can be blocked if needed.

Supports prefixes and postfixes to ensure something is always at the start/end of the topic (e.g. channel homepage URL).

If a user changes the topic with /topic, will try to learn the new one so that future !topic commands work smoothly. If a topic is set without a pre- or postfix, the bot resets the topic with them.

Topic locking, so that it cannot be changed. If the topic is changed with /topic, the bot will change it back. TopicEngine uses the botnet to try to avoid a botfight with two locked topics.
he topic is reset after a netsplit to make sure all servers across the network have the topic.
Intelligent trimming of the topic to try to fit as much as possible into the available space.

Can learn a new topic if its set with /topic instead of through the bot. Automatically learns all the topics on active channels when joining them, and will update them to have pre- and postfixes if needed.

Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory::Intro 0.65

Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory::Intro 0.65

Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory::Intro is an introduction into the FormFactory framework. more>>
Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory::Intro is an introduction into the FormFactory framework.

The Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory framework is for Perl Gtk2 developers who (at least partially agree with these statements:

GUI programming is fun but often boring
A lot of tasks in GUI programming are similar and misleads the lazy programmer to do too much Copyn Paste
RAD tools like Glade are fine for small applications but not if you want to have a consistent look and feel in bigger and modular applications

Gtk2::Ex::FormFactory tries to help you with these issues by

Strictly separating GUI design, application logic and data structures
Giving the developer a more declarative style of defining the structure of your GUI
Giving the developer the possibility of definiting the design of the GUI at a single spot in your program
Being lightweight and easy to learn.

Enough buzzwords

Imagine you want to build a configuration dialog for your application, which consists of a notebook, to distinguish several topics, each containing a bunch of simpler widgets (in the following example a single text entry). Also it should have the usual Ok and Cancel buttons.

The straight approach often is to code all the stuff by hand or "draw" all widgets using Glade. At any rate you need to take care of:

Consistent look and feel, e.g. labels should be bold and properly aligned to the widgets; the widgets iteslf should have some space around them, buttons should always be aligned to the form above etc.
Initializing the widgets with the actual content of your configuration data
Either connecting a lot of signals to track the changes the user made. This would apply all changes straight to your internal data structure, which may make implementing the Cancel button difficult or impossible
Or grabbing all (changed) data from the widgets, when the user hit the Ok button resp. simply close the window, when the user hit the Cancel button

Thats a lot of stuff, which needs to be repeated for every single dialog in your application. No fun anymore.

The ACE ORB from the doc group 1.5.8

The ACE ORB from the doc group 1.5.8

TAO is a standards-compliant, real-time implementation of CORBA that provides. more>>
TAO project is a standards-compliant, real-time implementation of CORBA that provides efficient, predictable, and scalable quality of service (QoS) end-to-end.

Unlike conventional implementations of CORBA, which are inefficient, unpredictable, non-scalable, and often non-portable, TAO applies the best software practices and patterns to automate the delivery of high-performance and real-time QoS to distributed applications.

Over the past decade, my research group has worked with many collaborators on large-scale distributed application R&D projects in diverse domains, including command and control systems, telecom, datacom, medical engineering, distributed interactive simulations, and financial services. Regardless of the domain and application requirements, weve found that software developers wrestle with the same core infrastructure challenges. Key challenges focus on OS platform portability, connection management and service initialization, event demultiplexing and event handler dispatching, multi-threading and synchronization, fault detection and fault tolerance, and various quality-of-service (QoS) issues, such as controlling latency, throughput, and jitter end-to-end.

Unfortunately, its very costly, time consuming, and error-prone for researchers and developers companies to independently rediscover and reinvent ad hoc solutions to these core distributed application software development challenges. Fortunately, we have identified a relatively concise set of patterns and framework components that can be applied systematically to eliminate many tedious, error-prone, and non-portable aspects of developing and maintaining distributed applications.

A decade of intense R&D on these topics has yielded ACE, which is an object-oriented framework that implements many core patterns for concurrent communication software. We have applied the patterns and components in the ACE framework to develop The ACE ORB (TAO), which is our standards-based, CORBA middleware framework that allows clients to invoke operations on distributed objects without concern for object location, programming language, OS platform, communication protocols and interconnects, and hardware. TAO is designed using the best software practices and patterns that we have discovered in our work on ACE in order to automate the delivery of high-performance and real-time QoS to distributed applications.
