Dave Gnukem 0.56

Dave Gnukem is a 2D scrolling platform shooter. more>>
Dave Gnukem is a 2D scrolling platform shooter. It is inspired by and similar to Duke Nukem 1, one of my all-time favourite games. It currently runs on Windows, Linux and BeOS.

Although this is by no means a finished game, it is playable. You can walk, jump, shoot baddies, collect stuff, die, teleport, open doors, use lifts, open boxes etc. There is also a level editor.

I started writing this back in 1995 in my first year at university (actually it goes back longer than that, before that there was a pascal/assembly version), and work on it intermittently whenever I get time and inspiration.

It was originally a DOS-based 16 color EGA game; I then converted it to Linux/GGI, then I did a DirectX-based Windows port, and then I converted it to SDL. The code is a bit messy due to its colourful history, Im slowly trying to clean it up.

Let me know if you would like to help with this project; comments, code, graphics, sound and levels are all very welcome.

Diogenes comprises a set of Perl scripts designed for searching the Latin and ancient Greek texts. more>>
Diogenes is a tool for searching and browsing the databases of ancient texts, primarily in Latin and Greek, that are published by the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the Packard Humanities Institute. Diogenes project is free software: you are encouraged to modify, improve, and redistribute it under the terms of the GNU General Public license.
The goal of this software package is to provide a free, transparent and flexible interface to the classical databases on CD-Rom in the PHI format, which include the TLG, the PHI corpus of Latin texts up to AD 200, the Duke Documentary Papyri collection, and the PHI-sponsored corpora of ancient inscriptions.
Enhancements:
- Fixed bug whereby entering a path for the minor corpora would result in an illegal config file entry to be written.

Music Player Daemon 0.12.1

Music Player Daemon 0.12.1

Music Player Daemon is a jukebox server that controls music playback (MP3, Ogg, Flac, AAC, Mod, wave). more>>
Music Player Daemon (MPD) is a server that allows remote access for playing music (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Mod, and wave) and managing playlists.
Music Player Daemon makes a great desktop player with frontend options (Qt, GTK, ncurses, Windows, and Web clients are available). It is also appropriate as a console player that is scriptable, and is especially useful if X is restarted frequently.
A set of rapid development tools for clients are being developed and include a C library, Python module, PHP class, Perl module, and Java Class.
The goals are to be easy to install and use, to have minimal resource requirements, to be stable and flexible, and easy to interface.
MPD is designed around a client/server architecture, where the clients interact with MPD over a network. Thus, running MPD is only half of the equation; to use MPD, you need to install a MPD client:
Web Clients
- phpMp - Web interface written in PHP
- phpMp2 - Another web interface written in PHP
Graphical Clients
- gmpc - Gnome Music Player Client
- kmp - Graphical interface written in Qt
- MPDCon - A GNUstep Graphical interface
- glurp - Graphical interface written in GTK+
- WMmp - Window Maker dockapp
- gtk2mp - Try gmpc first! Graphical interface written in Gtk+
Command Line Clients
- ncmpc - ncurses (command line) client
- mpc - (Scriptable) command line client
- bashmp - client written as bash aliases and functions
Miscellaneous Clients
- mpcstick - Linux joystick client
- arthist - Perl client to generate a web blog of MPD activity

Tuxaator 1.76

Tuxaator 1.76

A lightweight IRC bot/dictionary, easy to set up, easy to localize. more>>
A lightweight IRC bot/dictionary, easy to set up, easy to localize.

Installation:

1) Edit the configuration file in config/config.tux.dist, change all values to suit your needs and then rename it to config.tux. Take your time to read through it, there are quite a few aspects you can alter

2) Create a new MySQL database with the name you set for db_base in the configuration file

3) Create a new MySQL user and grant it all privileges to the database you just created.

4) Create the tables required by the bot entering the following command
mysql -u db_user -p db_base < tux.sql

5) edit config/hosts.dist, add your hostmask to the file, save and then rename it to hosts

6) Now you should be all set up, go to the directory where the main program is and try to run it by entering

./tuxaator

With a little luck, you will be connected to server and choose the channel.

If you also want the bot to announce Freshmeat news and give information about kernel releases if asked, read on. If not, youre finished.

Setting up the external scripts

Tuxaator relies on external scripts to gather various information of interest from the Net. The scripts are not called from the bot, but are to be run separately, for example from the crontab.

Right now I have implemented 2 sample scripts:
kernel.sh - retrieves information about the latest kernels
fetchfm.sh - retrieves latest news from FreshMeat

Both scripts are located in the "scripts" directory of the installation and have to be configured separately, it is pretty straightforward though, just open them in your favourite text editor and follow the instructions.

Refer to "man 5 crontab" for information on how to setup the cronjobs.

My configuration looks like this:
1,31 * * * * /home/duke/tuxaator/scripts/fetchfm.sh > /dev/null
55 * * * * /home/duke/tuxaator/scripts/kernel.sh > /dev/null

This is, freshmeat news are retrieved 1 and 31 minutes after hour, and kernel news 55 minutes after hour. I found this configuration to be sufficient.

ccextractor 0.30

ccextractor 0.30

ccextractor is a fast closed captions extractor for MPEG files. more>>
ccextractor project is a fast closed captions extractor for MPEG files.
ccextractor is mostly a mildly optimized C port of McPoodles excellent but painfully slow Perl script SCC_RIP. It lets you rip the raw closed captions (read: subtitles) data from a number of sources, such as DVD or replay TV.
As an added bonus compared to the original SCC_RIP, ccextractor can extract subtitles from the HDTV transport streams that are becoming more common.
At this point ccextractor extracts the line 21 captions (which must legally be present for a number of years until the transition to digital is complete). Note that in most .ts you can find, there will be subtitle data for both analog (EIA-608) decoders and digital (EIA-708). AFAIK there are not
freely available EIA-708 rippers.
Anyway, since line 21 captions will be available for some time, we have time to build a decent 708 ripper.
Basic Usage
For details on CC, please go to McPoodles page:
http://www.geocities.com/mcpoodle43/SCC_TOOLS/DOCS/SCC_TOOLS.HTML
You will need his tools to use ccextrators output.
The basic idea is that you get the raw closed caption dump from ccextractor.
Then you need other tools (which vary depending on what you want to do) to continue processing.
To get a transcript from a .ts file in .srt (I assume this will be the most common use) do this:
ccextractor -12 input_file
-12 means "extract both subtitle tracks" (actually technical names are fields but tracks is easier to understand). 1 is almost always English. 2 is Spanish in HBO (at least in the few samples Ive seen) but could be anything. Just extract both of them and check.
Example: cctractor -12 house315.ts
ccextractor will create two files, called house315_1.bin and _2.
Then use McPoodles RAW2SCC to create a temporary SCC file (means Scenerist, which is originally the native format for some program, its not important here).
raw2scc house315_1.bin
This creates house315_1.scc
From this .scc file, you can get the final .srt by using McPoodles CCASDI:
ccasdi -s house315_1.srt
Which looks like this (just 3 random lines shown).

Enhancements:
- This release adds support for DVR-MS files.
- It improves the CC decoder.
- There are several bugfixes, a major speed boost (20%-40%), improved timing for non-TS files, improved format autodetection, and other minor improvements.

Tactical Operations: Crossfire Server 1.6

Tactical Operations: Crossfire Server 1.6

Tactical Operations: Crossfire is a tactical shooter based on Unreal Tournament 2004. more>>
Tactical Operations: Crossfire is a tactical shooter based on Unreal Tournament 2004.

Tactical Operations: Crossfire is a fast paced first person online shooter in which two teams, terrorists and special forces, duke it out in a wide variety of environments with various objectives to accomplish. From rescuing hostages kept in a small desert town in Saudi-Arabia to preventing the bombing of an oil refinery on the Caspian sea shore. There are no less than fourteen official maps to choose from!

Each map is played for a certain amount of time and the team having won the most rounds when the time runs out is declared the winner. A round can be won either by completing the objective set for that team, such as rescueing the hostages, or by simply eliminating all players on the opposite team.

A large number of weapons is avaialable for both teams, which can be purchased by each player at the start of the round. Out of the thirty weapons currently available, theres bound to be a weapon to suit your style of playing, be it either up close and personal with the Benelli Nova tactical shotgun or sneaky sniper work with the Dragunov SVD.

Tactical Operations: Crossfire continues where the popular Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror left off, with many classic weapons returning and remakes of some of the original maps. To play TO:C, you will need Unreal Tournament 2004 installed and patched to the latest version (3369). Tactical Ops: Crossfire can be played on Windows, Linux and Mac systems.

Worminator 3.0R2.1

Worminator 3.0R2.1

Worminator 3 is akin to many Apogee Software and ID Software classic action games such as Duke Nukem and Commander Keen. more>>
Worminator 3 is akin to many Apogee Software and ID Software classic action games such as Duke Nukem and Commander Keen.
In Worminator game, you play as The Worminator (or as several other optional characters) and fight your way through many levels of madness and mayhem.
It features nine unique weapons, visible character damage, multiple supported resolutions, full screen scrolling, sound and music, and more.
Original Worminator story...
The year is 2028, 14 years after the start of the deadliest war in the history of worm kind. Much has changed... In the year 2012; a brilliant American scientist discovered how to make W.O.R.M. (Wormborg Operated Remote Missile) Weaponry, and to work them, the "WormBorgs" cyborg fighting machines.
These so called "WormBorgs" were the elite fighting force and the pride of the United Worms of America. Their life-like roles soon became far too life-like. They thought on their own, and acted on their own whims, under their own leader "DirtNet." No one exactly knows who or what "DirtNet" is, but it soon began to take over.
First, it launched the W.O.R.M.s at the Woroviet Union, in the hopes that they would retaliate and initiate a war between the Woroviet Union and the UWA. However, "DirtNet" obviously had a few bugs to work out, and the W.S.S.R was obliterated into millions of radioactive hunks of mud and dirt. Despite the fact that no one liked Wormunism anyway, all of Wormurope retaliated against the UWA.
Soon, the world was turned into a nuclear wasteland. Nuke drops became daily ordeals, and the giant bombs turning whole forests into matchsticks was to be expected. As if the sewers werent loaded with enough mutated alligators as it was, the hunks of radioactive material combined with the primordial soup of the sewers are said to have created blobs of sewage ooze, powerful enough that they fed off the mutated alligators for lunch.
After what was left of Wormurope had realized what tricks had been played on them by "DirtNet," they began to rally and fight back. For 8 years, the WormBorgs dominated the lands, crushing the rebels... until one faithful day, when the now famous rebel hero emerged. It was Wrom Conner.
No longer acting as individual factions, countries or nations, the rebels struck quickly and fiercely under Wroms command, using tactics that even the powerful W-1000s processors could not predict. The tide of the war had turned.
Over the next 5 years, the rebels devastated the WormBorgs. Using guerilla tactics and reprogrammed WormBorgs to fight for them, the rebels were a resourceful army indeed. Now, in desperation, "DirtNet" has just brought its proto-type WormBorg online, equipped with the latest in armor and weaponry, in one last attempt to regain control...
Main features:
- Fast, fluid scrolling
- 12 unique weapons, and many types of ammo
- Lots of gibs and shrapnel (all cartoonish, though)
- Visible character damage (as you get hurt, the Worminator actually becomes bloody)
- Visible weapons (every weapon actually appears differently on the Worminator. Most platform games have a single weapon graphic that shoots every type of projectile)
- Over 12 fully animated enemies
- Comes with over 16 levels, and a level editor is included so you can make your own
- Keycards, doors, special items, switches, lever, extending bridges, floating platforms, and more!
- Earthquakes rip the ground apart, while snow and rain fall around you
- Great MIDI tunes by Garret Thomson (garret_t@sympatico.ca, www.sirsonic.com)
- Many sound effects (All from Internet sites such as Sound America and Meanrabbit. Let me know if there are any copyright problems, and I will deal with them immediately)
- Parallax scrolling, plus four data layers in every map. This makes the engine very flexible
- Game includes a campaign game with special scripted events, as well as an option to load custom maps
- Stereo sound effects (where available)
- Limited skins support; you can play as different characters!
- Built using Allegro + DJGPP. Source code may be made available if the demand is there
- If you wish to use the Worminator engine, contact me and we will discuss it (I would never charge any money for it, so if your interested, drop me an email. You have nothing to loose)
- Totally Freeware!
Enhancements:
- made worminator compile and run on Linux (Unix)
- made worminator yield the cpu when its idle
- save settings in textfile format under $HOME/.worm3.cfg instead of as binary blob in cwd
- save / load game to / from $HOME/.worm3.sav
- load datafile from DATADIR as defined during compilation instead of from cwd
- speedup: dont redraw borders and statuspanel unless nescesarry
- check all file accesses and give an error and continue when possible instead of just segfaulting
- fix a crash when changing audio options after loading a savegame of a custom-level or the tutorial
- fix a crash (unix only?) when changing video options and one similar on exit
- fix crash on exit caused by a few double frees on exit
- dont ask for confirmation on load/play_demo/exit when their is no game in progress
- show a message when trying to save when no game is in progress, instead of just silenty ignoring the request
- when clicking on another submenu when in one not only close the current one, but also open the new one
- fix map / savegame / demo read/write routines so that they work on Big Endian archs like PPC too
