PhpGmailDrive is a new type of file sharing utility. Unlike typical file servers (say xDrive) it uses Gmail as backend file server. You can enjoy it simply by hosting a small PHP script in your web site without any database.
Gmail file space is more than 2GB, so you can imagine you already have such a big space on internet. However, you will require a Gmail account (If you dont have any Gmail address, go GmailSwap or ask your friends.).
PGD automatically connects Gmail server and fetches list of all attached files and generate downloadable links in a tree like view. If you are looking for a file server to upload your music or notes without any hassle, PGD is ideal for you. Technically speaking PGD is wrapper of Gmailer .
Thought there is no need to know hecks of PHP or Gmailer. Just you have to check that your PHP hosting service provider has curl extension of PHP to handle HTTP/HTTPS traffic.

BSDLive is a live filesystem CD based on FreeBSD that can fit on a business card CD-ROM.

This means that its a FreeBSD operating system that will work directly from a CD, without touching your hard drive.

DaemonRip runs as a Unix daemon and polls a CD drive to see if an audio CD is inserted.

When an audio CD is detected, it will automatically connect to a CDDB server to determine the name, artists, and tracks of the CD, and begin to rip and encode the CD using your preferred ripping and encoding applications.

When finished ripping the disc, it will be ejected from the drive, allowing you to insert a new one to continue the process. No other user interaction is required.

DaemonRip project also can keep statistics about your ripping and encoding times, and logs all of the actions to a log file.

Audio Transcriber records large audio samples, like a tape or radio broadcast, to your hard drive and splits it into tracks to be burned onto CD-R media.

The goal of Audio Transcriber is to make it easy to transfer audio tapes, LPs, or radio broadcasts to tracks on CD-R/CD-RW.

Wipe is a file and block device wiping utility. It is based on work by Peter Gutmann.
There are some low level issues that must be taken into consideration. One of these is that there must be some sort of write barrier between passes. Wipe uses fdatasync(2)
(or fsync(2)) as a write barrier, or if fsync(2) isnt available, the file is opened with the O_DSYNC or O_SYNC flag.
For wipe to be effective, each pass must be completely written. To ensure this, the drive must support some form of a write barrier, write cache flush, or write cache disabling. SCSI supports ordered command tags, has a force
media access bit for commands, and write cache can be disable on mode page 8. IDE/ATA drives support write cache flushes and write cache disabling.
Unfortunetly, not all drives actually disable write cache when yjhis is set up.Those drives are broken. Write caching should always be disabled, unless your system is battery backed and always powers down cleanly.

cdspeed is an application that can decrease the speed of you cdrom. Modern cdrom drives are too fast. It can take several seconds on a 60x speed cdrom drive to spin it up and read data from the drive. The result is that these drives are just a lot slower than a 8x or 24x drive. This is especially true if you are only occasionally (e.g every 5 seconds) reading a small file. This utility limits the speed, makes the drive less noisy and the access time faster. cdspeed is also very good if you prefer to listen to the musik on your mp3 CDs rather then the noise of your CD drive.
Note: recent versions of the eject command include the functionallity of cdspeed (via the -x option).
Installation instructions:
to compile type:
make
to install cdspeed to /usr/bin type:
make install
You can copy the script cdmount to /usr/bin,it will first reduce the speed and then mount the cd. See the explanations inside the cdmount script for further details.
