KDE 3.5.7

KDE 3.5.7

KDE is a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix workstations. more>>
KDE is a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix workstations.

It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system.

KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Microsoft Windows.

We believe that the UNIX operating system is the best operating system available today. In fact UNIX has been the undisputed choice of the information technology professional for many years. When it comes to stability, scalability and openness there is no competition to UNIX. However, the lack of an easy to use contemporary desktop environment for UNIX has prevented UNIX from finding its way onto the desktops of the typical computer user in offices and homes.

UNIX dominates the server market and is the preferred computing platform for computing professional and scientists. Without UNIX the internet would not be. But UNIX did not address the needs of the average computer user.

This fact is particularly unfortunate since a number of implementations of UNIX (Debian GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD etc.) are freely available on the internet. All of which are of exceptional quality and stability.

KDE The Desktop Environment

With KDE there is now an easy to use contemporary desktop environment available for UNIX. Together with a free implementation of UNIX such as GNU/Linux, UNIX/KDE constitutes a completely free and open computing platform available to anyone free of charge including its source code for anyone to modify. While there will always be room for improvement we believe to have delivered a viable alternative to some of the more commonly found and commercial operating systems/desktops combinations available today. It is our hope that the combination UNIX/KDE will finally bring the same open, reliable, stable and monopoly free computing to the average computer user that scientist and computing professionals world-wide have enjoyed for years.

KDE The Application Development Framework

Authoring applications under UNIX/X11 used to be an extremely difficult and tedious process. KDE recognizes the fact that a computing platform is only as good as the amount of first class applications available to the users of that particular platform. In view of these circumstances the KDE Project has developed a first rate compound document application framework, implementing the latest advances in framework technology and thus positioning itself in direct competition to such popular development frameworks as for example Microsofts MFC/COM/ActiveX technology. KDEs KParts compound document technology enables developers to quickly create first rate applications implementing cutting edge technology.

KDE The Office Application Suite

Leveraging the KDE application development framework a great number of applications have been built for the K Desktop Environment. A selection of those applications is contained in the KDE base distribution. At this moment KDE is developing an office application suite based on KDEs KParts technology consisting of a spread-sheet, a presentation application, an organizer, a news client and more. KPresenter, KDEs presentation application was successfully used at many presentations.

Flame Project 0.7.7

Flame Project 0.7.7

Flame Project is an Integrated Development Environment for producing Flash and Animated SVG files more>>
Flame Project is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for producing Flash and Animated SVG files, similar to Macromedia Captivate. It is licensed under the LGPL.

Imagine a free, easy to use GUI authoring environment that helps you create visually impressive and actually useful learning material. The short term goal for this project is to provide such an environment, and were well on the way to a first release for doing that.

Initially similar to Macromedia Captivate, but a big part is the support for Animated SVG. Flash has at least one serious design limitation (from my POV) making it nearly useless for comprehensive eLearning, and this appears to be addressed by the SVG spec.

The long term goal for this project is to provide both a complete authoring solution (like the Macromedia Flash IDE), and the components for server side communication, but thats a long way off. Lets finish the first bits first.

Rhinote is a simple Python/Tkinter script which provides virtual "sticky-notes" on your desktop. Rhinote is handy for jotting down quick notes or holding copied text that you plan to paste elsewhere later.

Text can be cut, copied, and pasted; and notes can be saved (as plain text) and viewed and/or edited later, in Rhinote or any other text-editing application.

While many such applications exist for virtually all computing platforms, Rhinote is extremely simple, lightweight, and "keyboard-friendly."

Fotoxx is a free open source Linux program for photo editing and collection management. The goal is to meet most user needs while remaining fast and easy to use. more>>

Fotoxx 7.7.1 is a free open source Linux program for photo editing and collection management. The goal is to meet most user needs while remaining fast and easy to use.

Navigate a large image collection using a thumbnail image browser. Import most camera RAW files and edit with 16-bit color. Save edited images as tiff-24/48 or jpeg with adjustable compression. Edit the whole image or an area outlined with the mouse, with adjustable edge-blending.Edit functions have fast feedback using the whole image. Multiple undo/redo aids evaluation of changes. Add tags, dates, and star-ratings to images. Search images using these criteria and also (wildcard) file names.

The GUI has English, German, Spanish, Galician, French, Chinese, Greek, and Czech. A user guide is available in English, French, Spanish, and Galician.

Fotoxx works best on a fast computer with at least a gigabyte of memory. Multiple processor cores are utilized. Netbooks work adequately, but some edit functions will be slow and a 1024x600 screen is confining.

Major Features:

  1. Flatten brightness distribution (quick fix for many photos)
  2. Brightness and color adjustments using movable curves
  3. Trim, Rescale, Rotate (any angle)
  4. Warp (stretch/distort image by dragging the mouse)
  5. Sharpen, Blur, Noise reduction, Red-eye removal
  6. Panorama and HDR composites (hand-held photos OK)
  7. Artful transformations (simulated drawing or painting)
  8. Pixel edit with variable brush and blending
  9. Rename a series of files using a base name and sequence number
  10. Slide-show mode: full screen, no menu, keyboard navigation
  11. Batch convert multiple RAW files to tiff/48
  12. Select images from the navigator and burn a CD or DVD
  13. View EXIF data

h264enc 7.8.7

h264enc 7.8.7

h264enc is a shell script which encodes video files or DVDs to the H.264 format using MEncoder. more>>
h264enc is a shell script which encodes video files or DVDs to the H.264 format using MEncoder. The script is targeted primarily at power users who like to tweak their settings in order to achieve best possible quality
The script supports virtually all options of the libx264 library and has further support for 1-pass, 2-pass, 3-pass and fixed-quant encoding modes, 11 different software scalers, DVD cropping, interlaced encoding, deinterlacing of video content, setting output frame rate value, various audio codecs (MP2, MP3, AC3, AAC, PCM, ADPCM), file splitting, and more....
Theres a man page which provides further info on the h264enc script. To access it after installation, open a console and type "man h264enc" without the quotes.
Note: instead of typing n every time you dont want to use a specific option, you can just hit enter. I also suggest to read the x264 part of the MPlayer man page so you
can get more familiar with what a specific option does as most of the x264 options supported by this script may have a huge impact on quality/encoding speed.
To obtain best performance, I suggest to download MPlayer and the libx264 library and compile them yourself. You should use the appropriate CFLAGS at compilation time to optimize the code for your hardware architecture (example: CFLAGS="-O3 march=athlon-xp mtune=athlon-xp -finline-functions -freorder-blocks -fexpensive-optimizations")
For more info on the MPEG compression, read the README.encoding file
Main features:
- Support for 1-pass, 2-pass, 3-pass and fixed-quant encoding
- Support for DVD and video files
- Support for deinterlacing DVDs/video files with a user
- selectable deinterlacing filter
