Bandwidth Meter and Diagnostics is a Firefox extension that will automatically check whether Internet connection is working or not when a website can not be loaded, and a list of tools for network troubleshooting. Try to type a random domain name(e.g., qwqwqwq121212.com) to see what this means ...
This extension adds "Bandwidth Meter" to the Tools Menu. It performs the following tasks:
- Display your public IP address
- Display your public domain name
- Test download speed/bandwidth
- Test upload speed/bandwidth
This extension runs under any OS. If you use Windows, you could try our other Windows specific extension "Broadband Speed test and Diagnostics" that has extra features and can only run under Windows. We are creating this because we get many requests from non-windows users.

Citation 1.7
Citation project is a web based tool for bibliographic conversions. more>>
Citation project is a web based tool for bibliographic conversions.
Citation is a bibliographical conversion program designed to transform data between several different formats including GTEC, Refer, and Bibtex.
This program saves the researcher time by keeping unnecessary formatting from taking up their time. Currently, Citation is written in Java.
The use of Java moves much of the processing of the program to the users machine.
After downloading the Citation applet, the user is free to log off the network, but can still continue using the Citation applet.
Main features:
- Citation is available in both applet format and command line driven application.
- The Citation applet has the ability to convert between single or multiple entries.
- The Citation application is specifically designed for batch processing of files.
- Easy to use interface.
- Citation 1.7 supports format conversion from: INSPEC, ENGI, GTEC, PSYCH, Refer, and Bibtex to: Refer, Bibtex, HFS (Handbook for Scholars), Chicago Manual of Style, MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychology Association), and Galileo formats: ABI and Periodicals.
- Citation 1.7 has added new input manual format where user can add his or her own inputs in the input boxes rather than cut and pasting. This also supports format conversion mentioned previously.

OpenScientist 16.0
OpenScientist is an integration of open source products working together to do scientific visualization and data analysis. more>>
OpenScientist is an integration of open source products working together to do scientific visualization and data analysis, in particular for high energy physics (HEP).
The project is definitely NOT one million lines of intricated and unnecessary complicated home made code reinventing everything.
Motivations
Experiments in high energy and nuclear physics need to be at the edge of computing technologies but at the same time have to face a very long life time (LHC experiments are going to be a matter of decades). This involves that the software must be organized in a way that permits to include or discard some technologies in an easy way without having to recode everything at each change of a piece.
For data analysis, the HEP community had used the CERN/PAW tool for years. Whilst this program had been used and is probably still used by hundred of physicists in the world, it is not any more maintained by the lab that created and promoted it : CERN. This lab had not been able to establish long term collaborative software engineering plans in order to have a technical follow up of this program and analysis tools in general. (What is astounding, is that the same people that were behind CERN/PAW come now with another tool (ROOT) which has exactly the same engineering defects).
OpenScientist is first of all an architecture trying to handle the problem differently to avoid upseting huge software phase transitions in the future. The key points of the system are the modularity and the openness. See the Languages, Coarse graining architecture, and The file formats intrinsic pain section for more about the technical choices and design.
Enhancements:
- An HDF5 driver was introduced in BatchLab.
- The build system was replaced with obuild.
- Support for CoinPython was added.
- Initial support was added for both Qt4 and SDL.
- Examples were added.
- Assorted code cleanups and speedups were done.

Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook 1.1
Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook is an electronic lab notebook. more>>
OS-ELN is an Electronic Lab Notebook which you can freely download and use.
OS-ELN is deliberately simple; fully-fledged commercial ELNs are necessarily much more complex. As such, OS-ELN is a good teaching tool and a place for experimentation with ELN technology and concepts.
Users can sign up for an ELN, within which they can record their experiments, and you can attach files as part of an experiment. With knowledge of Zope, you can expand the system as you wish, for example to change the look & feel, to access relational databases, add other content to experiments, etc.
Version restrictions:
- You would be very unwise to use OS-ELN to document work that may lead to a patent claim (or defend against a patent infringement action) or for work that may be regulated (by, for example, the FDA). You should either buy a commerical ELN or use paper.

gTipi 0.2.0
gTipi project is a Gtk+/GtkPlot based software for physics / electronics laboratory work for GNU Linux platforms. more>>
gTipi project is a Gtk+/GtkPlot based software for physics / electronics laboratory work for GNU Linux platforms.
The first goal is to make a free (as in speech) replacement for Regressi, a commercial front-end for lab work with the Orphy GTS/GTI hardware, for Windows. Regressi has many features that students do not need in High schools.
gTipi will be simpler and provide, at least in his first versions, only the most important features.
At the moment, gTipi only supports the Orphy GTS hardware using liborphy, but supporting other hardwares should not be hard, provided I have the model to test and specifications to write acquisition functions (or existing libraries). Thats why gTipi should not depend on the acquisition hardware.
gTipi is distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL license.
Main features:
- data acquisition on Orphy inputs and data plotting in real time (possibility to parameter time between two acquisitions, and total acquisition time)
- plot export in PostScript format
- data export in plain text
- plot printing
- precise data values visualization on each point
- experimental points fitting with a given model (non-linear least squares fitting)
- function plotting

Netkit 4 TIC
Netkit is a poor mans system to experiment computer networking. more>>
Understanding computer networks without performing practical experiments is really difficult, not to say it is almost impossible. Unfortunately, setting up a networking lab can be very expensive.
Netkit has been conceived as an environment for setting up and performing networking experiments at low cost and with little effort. It allows to "create" several virtual network devices (full-fledged routers, switches, computers, etc.) that can be easily interconnected in order to form a network on a single PC. Networking equipments are virtual but feature many of the characteristics of the real ones, including the configuration interface.
Netkit exploits open source software (mostly licensed under GPL) and is heavily based on the User Mode Linux (UML) variant of the linux kernel. The purpose of this project is to solve many of the difficulties and technicalities that a user could have in using UML for networking. We offer the users an easy-to-use-and-install package, which at the same time implements effective network emulation. Further, we provide a corpus of teaching material that can be used for courses at different levels.

SLab is a digital audio recording software suite for UNIX platforms. more>>
SLab is a digital audio recording software suite for UNIX platforms. It is currently supported on most versions of Linux, and FreeBSD. SLab is a multitrack harddisk recording application, a set of tools to record music to disk on a PC platform (running Unix of course). The application is software only, it just requires a reasonable PC with a soundcard. There are some limitations on soundcard support, and obviously some limits on track counts based on CPU/disk performance.
The name is pronounced either "slab" as a single word, or "ess-lab", whichever you prefer. I would have given it some groovy name, but most of the names I would like are already in use! "Yet another audio recording tool" would perhaps be a good alternative, since there are many available.
SLab consists of a mixing desk, tape deck, wave editor, and a few other auxilliary tools including digital effects processing.
With SLab you have the possibility to record up to 8 channels of music simultaneously (probably more in future versions).
