cpdetector project is a small yet clever framework for codepage detection. more>>
cpdetector project is a small yet clever framework for codepage detection.

cpdetector is a small yet clever framework for codepage detection that integrates different strategies. It may be used as a library for third party software that accesses textual data over network.

It also includes a best-practice implementation in form of a command line tool that allows sorting and transforming large collections of documents based on their codepage.

Available strategies include: jchardet (exclusion, frequency analysis, and guessing), detection of the HTML charset property, and detection of the XML encoding declaration.

What is a code page?

At first, a textual document is nothing more than sequences of bits. A computer has to decide, how he can display this data in form of characters (which are identified by the computer as numbers).

A code page - which is also known as charset encoding - maps the raw data of a textual document to characters. The original ASCII code page for example only uses 7 bits of an octet (byte) for deciding the character that is represented thus allowing only to map 128 different characters. In the past memory was expensive and computers most often only had registers and busses for 8 bit.

When a mainframe was conceived it had to be decided, which characters it should support. Physicians and mathematicians for example needed special characters for equations. As a result, a computer often shipped with a special codepage.

Apache Intrusion Detection Module 1.0

Apache Intrusion Detection Module 1.0

Apache Intrusion Detection Module is a simple tool to find out intrusion attempts by examining the client requests in real time. more>>
Apache Intrusion Detection Module is a simple tool to find out intrusion attempts by examining the client requests in real time.

This is a simple attempt to build an Intrusion Detection Module for Apache. It is being run at two different sites successfully but there is a performance penalty as the module intercepts all object requests and examines with the list of vulnerable CGI applications.

Issuing a simple make should do in most cases; at worst tweak with the Makefile. The make process will compile mod-id as a apache DSO module, if your server has no DSO support you will need more time...

Any suggestions and improvements are welcome.

Python Audio Tools 2.2

Python Audio Tools 2.2

Python Audio Tools are a collection of audio handling programs which work from the command line. more>>
Python Audio Tools are a collection of audio handling programs which work from the command line. These include programs for CD extraction, track conversion from one audio format to another, track renaming and retagging, track identification, CD burning from tracks, and more.
Supports internationalized track filenames and metadata using Unicode. Works with high-definition, multi-channel audio as well as CD-quality. Track conversion uses multiple CPUs or CPU cores if available to greatly speed the transcoding process. Track metadata can be retrieved from FreeDB or FreeDB-compatible servers. Audio formats supported are:
- WAV
- AIFF
- Sun AU
- FLAC
- WavPack
- Monkeys Audio
- MP3
- MP2
- Ogg Vorbis
- Ogg Speex
- M4A
Easy to install and use:
I dont like programs with lots of obscure dependencies, so Ive written Python Audio Tools to require as few external libraries and programs as possible. Most formats require only one or two common executables and some require none at all. Installation utilizes Pythons built-in distutils, but a provided makefile reduces the process to a simple "make install" command.
The programs that make up Python Audio Tools provide a consistent interface for painless switching between them. man pages are included, as is a lengthy manual for both users and programmers. See the short tutorial in the documentation for an illustration of their usage.
These Python Audio Tools are designed with Unix-like systems in mind. Although most of it is written in pure Python, the libcdio library is used to read from a CD-ROM drive. If one is willing to forgo the CD-based tools, Python Audio Tools is fully portable so long as the required helper applications are present. I have used it on the i386, x86_64 and ppc architectures without difficulty.
Standards compliant
Because Python Audio Tools sticks very close to established, documented standards, it has no trouble interoperating with other audio-handling programs. If you want to rip CDs with Exact Audio Copy, batch convert them to M4As with these tools and play them back in iTunes, thats no problem.
Enhancements:
- Revamped the track metadata system.
- Improved the file detection routines.
- Minor bugfixes.

Radar Tools 0.18

Radar Tools 0.18

Radar Tools is an advanced SAR remote sensing image processing software. more>>
Radar Tools in short RAT is a small collection of tools for processing SAR (synthetic aperture radar) remote sensing data, packed together in a nice graphical user interface.
Our motivation to start the development of RAT is that modern remote sensing software like Erdas Image or ENVI include only some basic SAR functionality. Advanced algorithms have to be implemented by oneself.
So we descided to start the development of RAT. RAT should bring modern SAR algorithms to a wider user-base by simplifying in particular the data handling and processing of complex SAR data.
RAT is planned as an ongoing community effort, i.e. there will be no final version with a certain functionality. It is our idea to include more and more SAR tools in future and to make them freely available to the scientific community.
We of course also hope for external contributions. Because of this, the programming interface of RAT is kept quite simple and adding own functions is quite easy. Function templates are included in the distribution and a step-by-step description of how to program a RAT module will appear soon in the documentation.

SIDEN 0.1.0

SIDEN is a distributed network discovery tool used for intrusion detection research. more>>
SIDEN is a distributed network discovery tool used for intrusion detection research. The current SIDEN architecture allows you to simulate coordinated/distributed network probes by a group of attackers.

SIDEN has been tested successfully on the OpenBSD and FreeBSD operating systems. If you try SIDEN and it works on any other platform, please contact me. Yes, it sounds interesting that I havent even tested it out on the popular Linux platform. There should be little reason why it wont work on other platforms (especially UNIX variants), since its fully implemented in Perl.
