Equinox Desktop Environment 1.1

Equinox Desktop Environment 1.1

Equinox Desktop Environment is small desktop environment, built to be simple, to have familiar look and feel and to be fast. more>>
Equinox Desktop Environment (shortly EDE) is small desktop environment, builted to be simple and fast.
Comparing to other desktop environments, EDE is much faster and smaller in memory space (EDEs window manager use less memory than xterm).
The word "equinox" comes from the Latin for "equal night". The equinoxes in March and September are the two occasions each year when the day and the night are of equal duration.
For measuring the length of a day, sunrise is the moment when the sun is half-above the horizon and sunset is the moment when the sun is half-under the horizon. Using this definition, the length of the day (and the night) is precisely 12 hours at an equinox.

Zirconium Desktop Environment 0.0.2

Zirconium Desktop Environment 0.0.2

Zirconium Desktop Environment is a new low resource desktop shell optimized for usability. more>>
Zirconium Desktop Environment is a new low resource desktop shell optimized for usability.
Zirconium Desktop Environment operates on the philosophy that the desktop environment needs to stay out of the users way and provide the quickest access to the functions that are truly needed from a desktop shell.
Principle Zirconium Desktop Environment design goals:
- Very easy navigation by taking advantage of the corner effect by placing the icons for the 2 most critical functions (program launcher and window switcher) in the top corners.
- Minimal use of on-screen real estate. This is accomplished by "recycling" the window title bar by overlapping the already minimal on screen furniture on top of the title bar when a window is maximized.
- Eliminating the "system tray". Instead of using a pixel wasting systray icon to communicate status to the user programs are expected to use the ZDE Notification Daemon to sent small unobtrusive notifications to the user when something of note occurs. The ZDE Notification Daemon uses the SOAP protocol for universal compatibility and network transparency.
- Web integration. An (optional) backdrop manager based on the embedded Gecko engine from Mozilla is provided to provide for "Weblets" to run on the desktop. The ZDE session manager also provides a SOAP API that can be accessed by signed or expressly permitted Weblets to access the ZDE system.
Components of the ZDE system:
Corner Menus.
The left corner menu opens up the Program Launcher. Note that the Program Launcher is a custom navigation window and not a pop-up style menu. The Launcher window closes when an item is activated or the mouse pointer leaves the window.
The right corner menu is a list of open windows for window switching. It is a standard GTK pop-up menu.
Mini-Bar.
In the top center is the Mini-Bar that shows essential items like the time, volume control, battery and network status. The Mini-Bar is the same height as the Title Bar of a window so that when a window is maximized the title bar is partly covered by the Mini-Bar.
Notification Daemon:
When a SOAP message for a Notification arrives the Notification pop-up appears briefly. When not shown the very edge is visible in the lower-right. Mousing over the edge makes the Notification appear again and the mouse leave event closes the notification making it very simple to dismiss a notification by just mousing over it. Clicking the visible edge will open a Notification History window showing all notifications that have been logged during the session.
Window Theme:
The Window Manager theme needs to make special allowances for the way ZDE is arranged. The title bar needs to be 22 pixels high and the controls need to be 22 pixels away from the ends of the title bar to allow for the corner icons.

Logical Desktop

Logical Desktop

Logical Desktop is a desktop environment for GNU/Linux that is different. more>>
Logical Desktop is a desktop environment. A "desktop environment" is a program that allows you to do many different things with your computer, but in a consistent way. Desktop environments can be seen as a "dogma" of how things should be done, and how they should look and feel.

Examples of desktop environments are KDE, Gnome, the Windows interface, etc.

In Logical Desktop, like in all desktop environments, you work by composing actions made of one verb and one or more objects (e.g. "Print" is the verb, and the objects are the printer, the files to print, and the program used for printing).

Logical Desktop is how you specify those things: 1) in any order 2) with automatic hiding of the things that dont make sense.

1. In any order: Logical Desktop enables you to specify your action with many possible styles of interaction (file-oriented, task-oriented, program-oriented, device-oriented). Logical Desktop can do that because it treats verbs and objects with complete symmetry and uniformity: you can select both verbs and objects, and in any order.

2. With automatic hiding: Logical Desktop is more intelligent than traditional systems because it hides the unnecessary things while you are composing the action. More precisely, Logical Desktop hides those verbs/files/devices/programs that make no sense with the current selection.
Combining this with the previous point (that you can select anything in any order), we obtain a very powerful mechanism: if you select a verb first, the objects that dont make sense with it are hidden; if you select an object first, the verbs that dont make sense with it are hidden.

Xubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)

Xubuntu is a nice Ubuntu desktop experience with Xfce4. more>>
Xubuntu community projects aim is to provide a nice Ubuntu desktop experience (even on older hardware) by using Xfce4 as the desktop environment and GTK+ 2 applications wherever possible.

Xfce4 has been supported in Ubuntus universe by the MOTUXfce team since Hoary and Breezy. For Dapper we want to go one step further and make Xubuntu a sibling of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu by having install and live CD images generated for it.

As Ubuntu has a delay of six weeks with a new release date of the first of June, Xubuntu should be released at the same time and should use the latest stable Xfce 4.X code (hopefully 4.4 will be released by then).

Gobuntu 7.10

Gobuntu 7.10

Gobuntu is a flavour of Ubuntu but with a very strict set of restrictions on the licences of code and content. more>>
Gobuntu is a flavour of Ubuntu (like Kubuntu or Xubuntu) that is basically the same desktop environment as Ubuntu (a GNOME desktop) and a very strict set of restrictions on the licences of code and content. This means that we try to strip out ANYTHING which is not modifiable and redistributable, including firmware, PDF’s, video footage, sounds etc.

We are trying to apply the FSF “rights” definition to everything in the platform. Gobuntu will not correctly enable much hardware today - but it exists as a banner for the cause of software freedom and as a reference of what IS possible with a totally rigorous approach.

The goal is to make it a real point of pride to be able to run Gobuntu on a laptop or desktop or server, because it means that all of the stars have aligned to ensure that you have complete freedom to use that hardware with free software.

The SVG Icons project provides SVG icon themes for desktop environments, including KDE and GNOME. more>>
The SVG Icons project provides SVG icon themes for desktop environments, including KDE and GNOME. They provide high rendering quality due to anti-aliasing, and reduce the amount of disk space required.

SVG Icons project has a goal to provide Open-Source reference implementation of SVG icon themes for leading Linux and UNIX Desktop Environments, in particular (but not limited to) KDE3 and GNOME2 Desktop environments.

SVG implementation for icons and other User Interface elements provides better rendering quality (due to extensive usage of anti-aliasing), reduces amount of disk space used, and decreases download time for icon themes over the web.

Developing icons in SVG also dramatically reduces development cycle, and allows to deliver results quickly, in prompted timeframe.

LXSession 0.1.1

LXSession 0.1.1

LXSession is a lightweight X11 session manager derived from XSM. more>>
LXSession is a lightweight X11 session manager derived from XSM.

LXSession is the default X11 session manager of LXDE. (LXDE: Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) http://lxde.sourceforge.net/

Though being part of LXDE, its totally desktop-independent. It doesnt depend on any desktop environment, and has few dependencies. The goal of this project is to make a simple and clean a X11 session manager which isnt tight to any desktop environment.

We know that GNOME session by default loads GNOME, XFCE4 session by default loads XFCE, and what will LXSession load then? "Its all up to you." You can give it a list of applications you want to launch, including window manager and other components of a regular desktop environment should have. Then, give this combination a new name, and you can have "your own custom desktop environment" now.

At the end of this README file, there will be a tutorial telling you how to create your own new desktop environment. So, be patient.

By default LXSession ships with a set of config files giving you a new desktop environment called LXDE. When you choose LXDE in GDM, KDM, or simply execute startlxde in xinitrc, When launching, LXDE will load icewm (window manager), pcmanfm (file manager), and lxpanel (desktop panel).

This, of course, can be changed, but I guess users will be intrested in creating their own new customized DE.

Check these files with text editors to see how LXSession works. These files define a default session named LXDE:

/usr/share/xsessions/LXDE.desktop: Add an entry in GDM & KDM
/usr/bin/startlxde: Convinient script launching LXDE
/etc/LXSM-LXDE-Default: Default programs loaded when LXDE is started,
containing window manager, desktop panel...etc.

You can create your own desktop session and give it a new name. For example, lets create a new desktop environment called MyDE.

1. Copy /usr/share/xsessions/LXDE.desktop to
/usr/share/xsessions/MyDE.desktop
2. Edit MyDE.desktop with the text editor you like. Replace all LXDE
with MyDE, and replace startlxde with startmyde.
3. Copy /usr/bin/startlxde to /usr/bin/startmyde.
4. Edit startmyde with text editor, and again, replace LXDE with MyDE.
5. Copy /etc/LXSM-LXDE-Default to /etc/LXSM-MyDE-Default
6. Edit LXSM-MyDE-Default, and list the programs you want to launch when
MyDE gets started in the file. Note that you had better not remove
"smproxy" since this can make programs without session management
support supported by session manager.
7. Done. Logout to check if your DE appears in the menu of GDM or KDM.
If not, restart them. If you dont use display manager, you can add
startmyde to your xinitrc to see if it works.
