Freenet 0.7
Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. more>>
Freenet software lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.
Communications by Freenet nodes are encrypted and are "routed-through" other nodes to make it extremely difficult to determine who is requesting the information and what its content is.
Users contribute to the network by giving bandwidth and a portion of their hard drive (called the "data store") for storing files. Unlike other peer-to-peer file sharing networks, Freenet does not let the user control what is stored in the data store. Instead, files are kept or deleted depending on how popular they are, with the least popular being discarded to make way for newer or more popular content. Files in the data store are encrypted to reduce the likelihood of prosecution by persons wishing to censor Freenet content.
The network can be used in a number of different ways and isnt restricted to just sharing files like other peer-to-peer networks. It acts more like an Internet within an Internet. For example Freenet can be used for:
Publishing websites or freesites
Communicating via message boards
Content distribution
Unlike many cutting edge projects, Freenet long ago escaped the science lab, it has been downloaded by over 2 million users since the project started, and it is used for the distribution of censored information all over the world including countries such as China and the Middle East.
Ideas and concepts pioneered in Freenet have had a significant impact in the academic world. Our 2000 paper "Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System" was the most cited computer science paper of 2000 according to Citeseer, and Freenet has also inspired papers in the worlds of law and philosophy. Ian Clarke, Freenets creator and project coordinator, was selected as one of the top 100 innovators of 2003 by MITs Technology Review magazine.
Enhancements:
- This release operates over UDP rather than TCP.
- It can transparently operate through firewalls.
- The core architecture and algorithm have been redesigned for simplicity and efficiency.
- A new and even simpler API allowing the rapid development of third party software that interacts with Freenet has been added.

KeyNote 2.3
KeyNote is a simple and flexible trust-management system designed to work well for applications. more>>
KeyNote is a simple and flexible trust-management system designed to work well for applications.
Trust management, introduced in the PolicyMaker system [BFL96], is a unified approach to specifying and interpreting security policies, credentials, and relationships; it allows direct authorization of security-critical actions. A trust-management system provides standard, general-purpose mechanisms for specifying application security policies and credentials. Trust-management credentials describe a specific delegation of trust and subsume the role of public key certificates; unlike traditional certificates, which bind keys to names, credentials can bind keys directly to the authorization to perform specific tasks.
A language for describing `actions, which are operations with security consequences that are to be controlled by the system.
A mechanism for identifying `principals, which are entities that can be authorized to perform actions.
A language for specifying application `policies, which govern the actions that principals are authorized to perform.
A language for specifying `credentials, which allow principals to delegate authorization to other principals.
A `compliance checker, which provides a service to applications for determining how an action requested by principals should be handled, given a policy and a set of credentials.
The trust-management approach has a number of advantages over other mechanisms for specifying and controlling authorization, especially when security policy is distributed over a network or is otherwise decentralized.
Trust management unifies the notions of security policy, credentials, access control, and authorization. An application that uses a trust- management system can simply ask the compliance checker whether a requested action should be allowed. Furthermore, policies and credentials are written in standard languages that are shared by all trust-managed applications; the security configuration mechanism for one application carries exactly the same syntactic and semantic structure as that of another, even when the semantics of the applications themselves are quite different.
Trust-management policies are easy to distribute across networks, helping to avoid the need for application-specific distributed policy configuration mechanisms, access control lists, and certificate parsers and interpreters.
For a general discussion of the use of trust management in distributed system security, see [Bla99].
KeyNote is a simple and flexible trust-management system designed to work well for a variety of large- and small- scale Internet-based applications. It provides a single, unified language for both local policies and credentials. KeyNote policies and credentials, called `assertions, contain predicates that describe the trusted actions permitted by the holders of specific public keys. KeyNote assertions are essentially small, highly-structured programs. A signed assertion, which can be sent over an untrusted network, is also called a `credential assertion. Credential assertions, which also serve the role of certificates, have the same syntax as policy assertions but are also signed by the principal delegating the trust.
In KeyNote:
Actions are specified as a collection of name-value pairs.
Principal names can be any convenient string and can directly represent cryptographic public keys.
The same language is used for both policies and credentials.
The policy and credential language is concise, highly expressive, human readable and writable, and compatible with a variety of storage and transmission media, including electronic mail.
The compliance checker returns an application-configured `policy compliance value that describes how a request should be handled by the application. Policy compliance values are always positively derived from policy and credentials, facilitating analysis of KeyNote-based systems.
Compliance checking is efficient enough for high-performance and real-time applications.
This document describes the KeyNote policy and credential assertion language, the structure of KeyNote action descriptions, and the KeyNote model of computation.

myOpenID 0.2
myOpenID is a small, fairly lightweight, standalone, single-user Identity Provider for OpenID authentication. more>>
myOpenID is a small, fairly lightweight, standalone, single-user Identity Provider for OpenID authentication. The project comprises a single PHP script that can be used by one individual to run their own personal OpenID "IdP."
The program requires no external libraries, and has very minimal requirements. It should run on almost any server that runs PHP 4 or 5. It requires no database, and does not access the file system beyond session handling.
What matters is that OpenID is a promising new technology, but from a user porint of view, its a pain the butt to manage. When I wanted to actually, yknow, get an OpenID thingie of my own, I found there was no satisfactory way to make it happen. My options were to either download a complex set of libraries and build an application to handle serving up my identity, or to set up an account with a third party provider. Since I dont like bulky libraries, and I really dont like the idea of re-centralizing a decentralized framework through trusting someone else with my account credentials... I did what any good Geek would do. I made myself a third option: myOpenID.
Usage:
myOpenID is a single user (though, if you were so inclined, you could easily turn it into a multi-user setup) IdP, or "Identity Provider" for the OpenID framework. Its a single PHP script with minimal dependancies. You dont need a database, you dont need to make your filesystem writable, you dont need to download any libraries, and you dont need to recompile PHP.
Okay, well, you shouldnt need to do any of that. Installation requires an MD5 hashing utility. Why? Because you have to authenticate to it using a password. myOpenID uses HTTP Digest authentication for security, and you set your password must be encrypted when the script is set up. For Linux or OSX, I suggest OpenSSL. For Windows, there are a number of utilities available. I suggest this one by Colin Plumb will do exactly what you need.
Enhancements:
- Added support for PHP4, including a better mechanism for getting Digest authentication headers which should work with non-Apache servers
- Added a (hidden) logout mode, usable by calling myOpenID.php?openid.mode=logout
- Fixed a bug which occurred when associate mode was called and was unable to produce a secure key. Future queries from that handle would then fail check_authentication mode queries
- The lifetime for a smart-mode client is now same as the default cache life of the session minus ten seconds, which should be just under three hours
- Renamed the sha20 function to sha1_20 (to designate using sha1 to get a 20 byte hash)
- Some code and debug cleanup

SecureSkat 2.8
SecureSkat project is a decentralized implementation of the German card game Skat. more>>
SecureSkat project is a decentralized implementation of the German card game Skat.
The program negotiates participating players and game sessions over an arbitrary IRC network (Internet Relay Chat).
Neither a trusted third-party (dealer) nor a centralized game server is necessary. All critical operations, e.g. shuffle of the deck, are performed using advanced cryptographic techniques (so-called Mental Poker solutions) provided by LibTMCG.
The outdated OpenSkat branch contains a graphical user interface based on XSkat 3.4. This interface can be used with most recent versions, but must be built separately.

TheCircle 0.41c
The Circle is an open source scalable decentralized peer to peer application. more>>
The Circle is an open source scalable decentralized peer to peer application. What does that mean? Well, theres no central authority running the show. No entry taxes either, no censorship, and (in theory) no weak point which can break the whole system. No one even owns the source code. There is a network, even if there are a few people which uses this program.
The Circle allows you to :
* Share files
* Send instant messages and chat IRC-style
* Put together your own personalized, trust based news service
* Proxy Debian package downloads
The Circle is written in Python. It runs on Linux and Windows. (in fact, there is very little operating system specific code, so it will most likely work on any system that supports Python).
At the core of the Circle is a decentralized hashtable, or "Chord". This table allows users to search for files in logarithmic time, based on keywords. This means that the Circle does not have the scalability problems of Gnutella style network (such as Kazaa, eDonkey), while also avoiding the need for a central server and therefore a single point of failure. Details of its operation are given in the "Technical Details" section below.
The Circle does have the ability to post fully anonymous news a la Freenet. However, the file-sharing protocol isnt entirely anonymous. People will be able to work out your IP address.
In order to protect user privacy, the Circle includes a Digital Rights Management system. Although everybody can search your files by their keywords, you may choose which users are authorized to download them. An unauthorized third party has access only to the names of your files, not to their content. Needless to say, we expect you to use this system in order to prevent copyright infringement, while allowing private copy.
Note: If we become aware that you are trying to share snuff or child pornography, we will be able to work out your IP and from that your location and identity, and report you to the police and/or your ISP. Snuff and child pornography are things we think any reasonable person considers to be evil (its an issue quite separate from the debate over copyright).

Matrix Public Net 0.5.0
Matrix Public Net spreads short voice messages through a web of trust. more>>
Matrix Public Net spreads short voice messages through a web of trust; credibility decays until a threshold where the message is dropped.
Matrix Public Net comes with a program for recording and sending messages as well as plugins for XMMS and WinAmp that play received messages.
Extending the Blogosphere
This is a proposal for the extension of the Blogosphere, the network of Weblogs.
Individual Blogs are connected by their users implicitly: a community emerges, because users regularly read and comment on others entries. By making this connexions explicit, a web of trust is created which functions like a reputation mechanism.
The resulting system leverages the advantages of social networks for the distribution of news. It can be implemented as a decentralised system, with a simple extension to the Blogosphere.
The system is explained in a paper and in the presentation at the Mobile Entertainment conference in Manchester.
The RSS MPN-Interest module is the first part of this extension.

libopkele is a C++ implementation of an OpenID decentralized identity system.
libopkele provides OpenID protocol handling, leaving authentication and user interaction to the implementor.
Normally, I do not jump on the emerging technologies, especially in the blogging arena, but this one is truly brilliant. Besides, despite its livejournal origins, the very idea doesnt have much to do with blogging.
In case you happen to be aware of the so called rest of the world existance, you may be as well aware of the frustrating experience to secure a visa to enter any particular territory and having to ask whatever country you happen to live in for assistance in confirming your identity. As if being yourself is not enough!
The same goes for Internet. It is much more pleasant to prove that you are what you are by being yourself and to carry your very own identity around. Furthermore, you dont have to force people to submit to your authority for the sole purpose of being recognized (if you want them to, youre not interested in this system and I am not interested in you either).
The library is semi-documented using doxygen markup. You may wish to make dox target to build the documentation.
Enhancements:
- Standards-compliance of URL canonicalization was improved along with association expiry handling.
- The documentation was updated slightly.

LibreSource 2.2
LibreSource is a software platform dedicated to software development and management of distributed communities. more>>
LibreSource is a software platform dedicated to software development and management of distributed communities.
LibreSource offers configuration management with the generic synchronization module So6 from INRIA research. It includes numerous tools dealing with project and user management, including bug trackers, forums, wiki pages, mailing lists, etc. An integrated search engine (Lucene) indexes the data hosted on the platform in full text mode.
With its naming tree, LibreSource makes it possible to hierarchize access to documents and resources. It makes it easy to define public and private areas. Its decentralized approach makes it possible to develop a set of robust applications while disregarding the underlying software architecture.
Enhancements:
- Integration of the Jabber instant messaging (Tigase server and Jeti client). LDAP group resource (map groups of users from LDAP groups).
- Dropbox resource (upload files to a confidential area).
- Form resource (create an electronic form online).
- Smart security rights behaviour. RSS feeds on most of the resources, public or private.
- Files included into a download area are easier to sort and to comment.
- Forums show the thread content inside the response page.
- A best children macro has been added.
- Several bugs have been fixed.
- Performance improvements.
- A smaller memory footprint.
- Better packaging.

ThreatNet::DATN2004 0.01
ThreatNet::DATN2004 is a Proposal: The Decentralised Active Threat Network. more>>
ThreatNet::DATN2004 is a Proposal: The Decentralised Active Threat Network.
This document has been created to describe a concept that may be of use in a variety of fields. It should be considered a general concept only and is subject to change.
This CPAN/POD version of the document, first published in December 2004 at http://ali.as/devel/threatnetwork.html, has been released to independantly timestamp and archive the concept and proposal in case of future patent-related issues by companies and to attempt to keep the core idea available to all.
On the Internet there exists an increasing number of different ways in which hosts are being misused or abused. Likewise there is also an increasing number of ways in which these known-bad hosts are being identified. Most of these occur in the process of a particular task, such as checking an email message for spam status.
As these hosts are identified, their identify is transmitted across to internet to members of threat networks. The most common of these are the various email "black lists", most of which use DNS or some other method to publish lists of known-bad ips or ip ranges. Mail processing services submit requests to a DNS server storing these lists to determine if a particular host contacting them is a known spammer.
This draft specification describes a system which would be used to identify a specific category of these bad ips, hosts that can be considered "Active Threats". An Active Threat is a host that is currently engaged in anti-social, damaging or criminal behaviour, such as actively sending out spam or viruses. This specification is NOT intended to deal with long-term offenders, as they are addressed by a number of current systems.
If applied to long term offenders, hosts would be registered as an Active Threat when they commence their anti-social behaviour, and fall off any list during periods in which they are not conducting this behaviour.
The general intent is to deal with only those hosts that are actively engaged in damaging behaviour, whether or not they are long term offenders or new offenders. And to deal with the hosts as soon as possible, ideally within a few seconds.
