Karbon14 1.6.1

Karbon14 1.6.1

Karbon is a vector-based drawing application for KOffice. more>>
Karbon is a vector-based drawing application for KOffice. The project allows artists to create complex drawings without losing image quality when zooming in on, or resizing the drawing. You can use Karbon to add finishing touches to diagrams created using Kivio or charts created using KChart. Graphic design ideas can be quickly and easily transformed into high quality illustrations with Karbon.
What makes a vector-based drawing application like Karbon different from a pixel-based drawing application like Krita?
In a vector drawing - such as the drawing shown above - your drawing is stored as geometric shapes such as lines and curves. When the drawing is resized, the image scales smoothly.
However, in a pixel-based drawing, your drawing is stored as many dots (pixels) in rows and columns. When you resize a pixel-based image, the dots will be enlarged. This can result in jagged edges known as pixelation and aliasing and thus the quality of the image will go down. Pixel-based drawings often have larger file sizes compared to simple vector drawings.
For example: Karbon is useful for creating cartoons drawings or editing clip art which often needs to be resized to fit in a document or on a poster. Krita is more suited to painting pictures or editing photographs.
To get started with Karbon quickly, you might want to try opening and modifying some of the images from the Open Clip Art Library.

SCZ 0.1

SCZ 0.1

SCZs primary routines are useful for compressing text, XML, line-drawing/diagram images. more>>
SCZs primary routines are useful for compressing text, XML, line-drawing/diagram images, scans of text pages, or other types of binary computer data. However, they are unable to compress photographic images very much because they implement lossless methods that can only reduce exactly repeated patterns within data which are common in the above file types but not in photographic images.
Here we speak of photographic images that are, for example, pictures taken with cameras of the real-world containing many features; not drawings or cartoons which contain large flat-color areas. The core SCZ compress and decompress routines restore data perfectly to the exact binary values, like GZip or Zip. But this is often not as important with image data, because the human eye can not discern exact binary values.
Therefore, special lossy image compression routines have been developed, such as JPEG, that take advantage of human perception effects to restore images which appear to match the original visually, but are not exactly binary equivalent to the original files. Recently, a new pair of routines has been added to SCZ for efficient photo-image compression.
The image_scz and image_dscz programs implement simple image compression/decompression, respectively. They reduce space required to store photographic images, are based on the SCZ core compression algorithm, and can be included within other applications. The image_scz and image_dscz programs are released as companions to the SCZ (Simple Compression) routines.
Image_scz accepts PPM image files and preprocesses them into a form that is more compressible, and then applies the normal SCZ compression. Specifically, it quantizes the differences between pixels in adjacent columns. The differences are quantized in a mu-law-like distribution so that small changes can be resolved. The quantization causes a small loss in image information, but increases the number of exact patterns that can be exploited by the normal compression algorithm.
On decompression with Image_dscz, the process is reversed. The processed image data is decompressed with the regular SCZ algorithm, and then the preprocessing is reversed by integrating the column-differences.
Presently, these routines are set to work only on PPM or PNM image formats. Other variants could be made. PPM/PNM formats are convenient because the format is well-known and straight-forward. In PNM the pixel values are recorded in a simple 2D-matrix with no compression, other than perhaps packing the binary pixel values as one (0-255) RGB value per byte. Commonly available tools such as GIMP, Image-Magik, XV, and Net-PBM can convert virtually any other format to/from PNM. (No need in re-inventing all the format conversion functions.)
Quality can be controlled with the (-q xx) Quanta setting. The default value is 8. Setting it to a lower value, such as 5 or 6, gives better compression, but lower quality images. Values of 10,12,16... give better quality images, but less compression.
An interesting aspect of this compression method is that successive compressions/decompressions of a given image do not degrade image quality, as will occur for instance with JPEG. Instead, the loss occurs once, during the first compression only.
This compression method will not compress quite as compactly as JPEG for a given quality level, however it will get you 9/10s the way with only 1/10 the code and dependencies. Also, the code/algorithm appear easier to understand and are simpler than JPEG.
Image_scz Options:
-q xx - Quality. Default=8. Values of 4-7 give better compression, but less quality.
Values of 9-16 give better quality, but less compression.
Image_scz accepts .ppm or .pnm files and produces compressed .iscz files. Image_dscz accepts .iscz files and produces decompressed .ppm files.
Example 1:
image_scz snapshot.ppm
(Writing output to snapshot.iscz)
image_dscz snapshot.iscz
Decompression ratio = 9.4
(Writing output to snapshot.ppm)
Example 2:
image_scz -q 6 snapshot.ppm
(Writing output to snapshot.iscz)
Enhancements:
- A photo-image compression routine has been added to SCZ.
- Unlike the core SCZ functions that implement perfect lossless compression, the new image-scz routine applies a lossy method appropriate for images.
- The simple algorithm greatly improves SCZ compression ratios on images.

Papagayo 1.1

Papagayo 1.1

Papagayo is a lip-sync program to synchronize animation with audio. more>>
Papagayo is a lip-sync program to synchronize animation with audio.

Papagayo is a lip-syncing program designed to help you line up phonemes (mouth shapes) with the actual recorded sound of actors speaking.

Papagayo makes it easy to lip sync animated characters by making the process very simple - just type in the words being spoken (or copy/paste them from the animations script), then drag the words on top of the sounds waveform until they line up with the proper sounds.

Papagayo is designed to be used with Moho, a 2D cartoon animation program, but since its open source, it can be modified for use with other animation applications.

Avango 1.0.3

Avango 1.0.3

AVANGO is an object-oriented framework for the development of distributed, interactive VE applications. more>>
Data distribution is achieved by transparent replication of a shared scene graph among the participating processes of a distributed application.

A sophisticated group communication system is used to guarantee state consistency even in the presence of late joining and leaving processes. The familiar dataflow graph found in modern stand-alone 3D-application toolkits extends nicely to the distributed case.

Many toolkits for the development of stand-alone VE applications exist today. They provide the programmer with a high-level interface to represent complex geometry in a scene graph and to render that scene graph. The programmer is shielded from the details of dealing with low-level graphics and system APIs, and can concentrate on the development of the application itself.

AVANGO provides programmers with the concept of a shared scene-graph, accessible from all processes forming a distributed application. Each process owns a local copy of the scene graph and the contained state information, which is kept synchronized.

Our object-oriented framework allows the creation of application specific classes, which inherit these distribution properties. Furthermore, the shared scene-graph is augmented with a distributed dataflow graph. This provides the same evaluation characteristics in distributed applications as in stand-alone applications, and effectively supports the development of distributed interactive applications.

In contrast to similar systems like Repo-3D (MacIntyre:1998) we focus on high-end, real-time, virtual environments like CAVEs (Cruz-Neira:1993:SSP) and Workbenches (HKP:Krueger94,HKP:Krueger95), therefore the development is based on SGI Performer (Rohlf:1994:IPH).

With AVANGO, we provide a framework that combines the familiar programming model of existing stand-alone toolkits with built-in support for data distribution that is almost transparent to the application developer.

Software Engineering Environment 0.07

Software Engineering Environment 0.07

Software Engineering Environment is an information manufacturing platform for software development. more>>
Software Engineering Environment (SEE) is frame for manufacturing information. It is implemented in sevlet and xml, and is used by the web-browser.
Software Engineering Environment (SEE) attempts to provide the information manufacturing platform for software development.
SEE is a free project, that is the author will provide all of its source code at the same time.
It runs in any servlet environment (The author merely verified in the Win and Linux environment), not using any special technique and needs no auxiliary program.
All of its data are saved in XML files, and need not database. (The future release will support the option of saving data, so that the user can select some free database, such as mysql, or commercial database to improve SEE speed.)
This means that the user can run SEE without any money. (Tomcat is a free servlet environment.)
User uses all SEE functions with the web-browser. So information sharing is very convenient.
SEE supports Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and English now.( It will support any language if someone will translate.) User can switch to interfaces in different language at any time when SEE is running. And user can add language translations which will work at once.
The main body of SEE is a frame for information manufacturing. All information included in it can be costumed dynamically and all changes will get into effect immediately. This means that the user can modify or add her/his own information structure as will at any time.
SEE provides various predefined selections for information attributes, which correspond various predefined information manufacturing patterns. The user can focus on the information description when costuming information definition, and the system will implement the functions automatically. This is the core of SEE. Most functions of SEE are in this model.
The default information definition of SEE is the result that the author understands what is the Software Engineering.
Although the target of SEE is helping for software development, actually, user can use it to design any type information, such as book registering, personnel lists, and financial reports etc.
The speed of SEE is not bad. Reading and writing 20000 records needs no more than 1 second. At present, the sorting speed is 9 seconds for 5000 records. (The testing platform is 1.8G CPU and 256M memory)
Enhancements:
- The data interface to prepare supporting databases.
- The databases are not supported in this release.
- A new interface style "Beautiful Flowers".
- These flowers are photoed in parks in this year by the author.
- The author likes the honeybee who holds a flower in its mouth very much. It is the first cartoon figure by the author. It will appear when you save wrong data. :)
- The function of "Personal Message".
- User can only query the messages sent by and sent to herself/himself. And user can only remove the messages sent to herself/himself.
- After a user read a message sent to her/him, SEE will mark it as "have_read" automatically.
- The number of new arrived messages will be shown in the interface.
- The data privileges management
- When user "Remove All" or "Modify All", the "base conditions" will be checked at first. That is user can only do what she/he can do.
- The Password fields values can not be visited, except when the user, who owns the "Import" privilege to current data, exports the data.
- All the data structures of ACL tables are changed! Their keywords become the "Title". This will permit user define better ACL.
- And the "condition" in the ACL tables are implemented completely. Now any "SEE conditions" is valid.
- Snapshot for image file
- When list the data, a snapshot will be shown for the image files type, which may end with jpg/jpeg/gif/png.
- Data sorting concerned with langauges.
- Thus when sorting data in Chinese, the result is Chinese result.
- General users can not visit the "User" table! Then they can not fill in many data!
- This is a fatal bug! This means all former releases can not be used actually!
- Now all ACL tables are redesigned.
- When a new user is added without password, SEE will add some password itself! Then this new user can never login!
- This is another fatal bug!
- In the last English release, which is 0.06, the ACL data are in Chinese!
- So the English users can not use SEE at all~~
- This is still a fatal bug!
- The "Risk Items" in the table "Deviation Handling" is wrong defined.
- This will cause an error information when user clicks the "Select" button.
- The values of Password fields can be visited when query or export.
- Although the values are meaningless encoded codes, they are still security thread.
- When some quota marks in the key values, pages will report errors and the function buttons, such as Modify and Remove, can not act!
- This is because quota is also an element of web page.
- When the interface language changes, the language in audit records changes too!
- This is not permitted. Language of all data is determined when SEE is installed and can not change with interface!
