Naken Web 2007-03-15

Naken Web 2007-03-15

Naken Web is both a tiny web server capable of serving static web pages. more>>
Naken Web is both a tiny web server capable of serving static web pages with built in ability to serve out live and prerecorded video in MJPEG format from video4linux devices and AVI files. Naken Web is small enough (22k to 32k) to run on embedded platforms and has been tested on the Gumstix embedded computer. Naken Web can be configured to serve out video from URLs similar to commercial IP cameras including Axis networked cameras.
History
A couple years ago I modified my Naken Chat chat server so that would act like a web server and serve out JPEG images out of an AVI file. Pressing the refresh button on a web browser to grab a new image would display the next image in the video based on the time that the web server was started. In other words, the video would play at normal speed in the browser. If you wait 5 seconds before pressing refresh and the avi plays at 30 frames a second, 150 frames are skipped so the time in the video is always accurate.
Main features:
- Serve out AVI files as if they were a live webcam
- Serve out static html web content like any other webserver
- Executable size is currently around 22k (32k with video4linux compiled in)
- Small/fast enough to run on embedded platforms such as Gumstix
- Alias URL strings of commerical IP cameras inluding Axis
- Video4Linux support for live video (early stages.. but working width bttv and sn9c102 based video)
- No dependencies unless video4linux is compiled in (libjpeg is needed then)
- Client Pull/Server Push for MJPEG video
- Username/Password Basic-Authentication
- Runs on both Unix/Linux and Microsoft Windows platforms
Version restrictions:
- If youd like to serve out AVI files the AVIs need to use the MJPEG codec. If you have a video encoded with mpeg or some other fileformat/codec, you can convert it to AVI/MJPEG using ffmpeg with the following line:
- ffmpeg -i myvideo.mpeg -vcodec mjpeg -b 10000 -s 352x240 -an out.avi
- Obviously you need to change myvideo.mpeg to the name of your input file, out.avi to what you want the output file to be called, -b is the bitrate and will affect the size of each jpeg in the avi file along with the quality of the video. The -s option is the resolution of the video. The -an option tells ffmpeg to leave out audio.
Enhancements:
- The performance of the server was increased significantly.
- Support for CGI was started.
- Support for Video4Windows devices was added.

Gunther is a set of PHP scripts that can be deployed on your web server and used to create, manage and easily maintain a website.
Gunther aims at a different target-market than most existing content management systems. Gunther is for those who want an instantly accessible tool to build small to medium sized websites and may want to provide others (clients, customers or friends) with an easily editable website.
Gunther strives to provide the user with genuinely useful features such as automatic thumbnail generation for uploaded images, customisable page templates, automatic generation of image galleries and an easy-to-learn wiki-style markup language to format pages. Gunther can also be deployed with zero configuration and comes with a clean, elegant, functional default page template so a Gunther driven site will look great from the word go.
All editing is done from within the web browser by logging in to your site with a user-name and password. A Gunther powered site works much like a wiki, however, unlike a wiki, a Gunther driven site is not open to modifications by the general public and the owner must log-in before being able to make changes.

Template::TT2Site is a Perl module to create standard web sites with the Template Toolkit.

SYNOPSIS

$ mkdir NewSite
$ cd NewSite
$ tt2site setup
... make your pages ...
$ tt2site build
... point your browser at html/index.html ...

tt2site is just a wrapper program. tt2site setup is equivalent to perl -MTemplate::TT2Site -e setup, and so on.

Template::TT2Site is a framework to create web sites using the Template Toolkit.

The technical structure of the site is patterned after the method described in chapter 11 of The Badger Book. The structure has been slightly simplified for ease of use, and a couple of neat features are added:

The resultant site is position independent, i.e., it only uses relative URLs to the extent possible. This makes it easy to build partial sites, and to relocate the contents.

The necessary means are provided to create multi-language sites, where each page gets a link to its translations.
The site.map hash, required for site navigation, is created automatically using minimal, position independent, directions.

This module, Template::TT2Site, provides the necessary methods to setup and maintain a site. It is used by the wrapper program, tt2site.

Apache Struts 1.3.5

Apache Struts 1.3.5

Apache Struts is a free open-source framework for creating Java web applications. more>>
Apache Struts project is a free open-source framework for creating Java web applications.

Web applications differ from conventional websites in that web applications can create a dynamic response. Many websites deliver only static pages. A web application can interact with databases and business logic engines to customize a response.

Web applications based on JavaServer Pages sometimes commingle database code, page design code, and control flow code. In practice, we find that unless these concerns are separated, larger applications become difficult to maintain.

One way to separate concerns in a software application is to use a Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture. The Model represents the business or database code, the View represents the page design code, and the Controller represents the navigational code. The Struts framework is designed to help developers create web applications that utilize a MVC architecture.

The framework provides three key components:

A "request" handler provided by the application developer that is mapped to a standard URI.
A "response" handler that transfers control to another resource which completes the response.
A tag library that helps developers create interactive form-based applications with server pages.

The frameworks architecture and tags are buzzword compliant. Struts works well with conventional REST applications and with nouveau technologies like SOAP and AJAX.

The Apache Struts Project is the open source community that creates and maintains the Apache Struts framework. The project consists of a diverse group of volunteers who share common values regarding collaborative, community-based open source development. The Apache Struts Project is proud to share these values with our parent organization: The Apache Software Foundation.

The project is called "Struts" because the framework is meant to furnish the "invisible underpinnings" that support professional application development. Struts provides the glue that joins the various elements of the standard Java platform into a coherent whole. Our goal is to leverage existing standards by producing the missing pieces we need to create enterprise-grade applications that are easy to maintain over time.

The Apache Struts Project offers two major versions of the Struts framework. Struts 1 is recognized as the most popular web application framework for Java. The 1.x framework is mature, well-documented, and widely supported. Struts 1 is the best choice for teams who value proven solutions to common problems.

Struts 2 was originally known as WebWork 2. After working independently for several years, the WebWork and Struts communities joined forces to create Struts 2. The new framework is the best choice for teams who value elegant solutions to difficult problems.

AMP 0.9.1 Beta

AMP is a framework-independant Java API that enables processing of AJAX requests in a normal MVC pattern. more>>
AMP is a framework-independant Java API that enables processing of AJAX requests in a normal MVC pattern.
AMP framework is currently integrated with the Spring framework to allow for easy configuration. It was inspired by Ruby on Rails partials.
About AJAX:
Asynchronous JavaScript And XML, or its acronym Ajax, is a Web development technique for creating interactive web applications. The intent is to shift a great deal of interaction to the Web surfers computer, exchanging data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire Web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user makes a change. This is meant to increase the Web pages interactivity, speed, and usability. The Ajax technique uses a combination of:
XHTML (or HTML) and CSS for marking up and styling information.
The DOM accessed with a client-side scripting language, especially ECMAScript implementations like JavaScript and JScript, to dynamically display and interact with the information presented
The XMLHttpRequest object to exchange data asynchronously with the web server. In some Ajax frameworks and in some situations, an IFrame object is used instead of the XMLHttpRequest object to exchange data with the web server.
XML is commonly used as the format for transfering data, although any format will work, including preformatted HTML, plain text, JSON and even EBML.
Like DHTML, LAMP, or SPA, Ajax is not a technology in itself, but a term that refers to the use of a group of technologies together. In fact, derivative/composite technologies based substantially upon Ajax, such as AFLAX, are already appearing.
Enhancements:
- Spring integration now has the additional option of using SpringAmpInterceptor instead of the servlet filter.
- The example application uses the new interceptor instead of the filter, though filter config remains commented out in web.xml.

webfilt is not a spam filter, but provides a generic web-based interface for Bayesian-style UNIX filters that need occasional training and corrections. It has been tested with SpamProbe and SpamBayes, but should work with other command-line filters too.

The webfilt system works with existing UNIX accounts, and consists of three distinct components that operate independently:

Users procmail recipes and cron jobs. The storelast.sh shell script is invoked by a users .procmailrc and simply saves a size-limited copy of each incoming e-mail message. The destination directory is determined by spam-state, done by procmail processing. A cron job periodically cleans old message copies.

webfiltd, daemon. The daemon component is invoked by inetd, and responds to a number of commands that allow a connecting client to authenticate, read files, and execute remote commands. This is all done with the authenticated users permissions. This daemon accepts just localhost connections.

webfilt.cgi, web interface The CGI program creates the web interface. Running with low privileges, it communicates with the webfiltd daemon over a socket to guarantee privilege isolation. The user logs in using their web browser and can then view recent emails and run commands on certain files (to train the filter).
