File::CounterFile is a persistent counter class.

This module implements a persistent counter class. Each counter is represented by a separate file in the file system. File locking is applied, so multiple processes can attempt to access a counter simultaneously without risk of counter destruction.

You give the file name as the first parameter to the object constructor (new). The file is created if it does not exist.

If the file name does not start with "/" or ".", then it is interpreted as a file relative to $File::CounterFile::DEFAULT_DIR. The default value for this variable is initialized from the environment variable TMPDIR, or /usr/tmp if no environment variable is defined. You may want to assign a different value to this variable before creating counters.

If you pass a second parameter to the constructor, it sets the initial value for a new counter. This parameter only takes effect when the file is created (i.e. it does not exist before the call).

When you call the inc() method, you increment the counter value by one. When you call dec(), the counter value is decremented. In both cases the new value is returned. The dec() method only works for numerical counters (digits only).
You can peek at the value of the counter (without incrementing it) by using the value() method.

The counter can be locked and unlocked with the lock() and unlock() methods. Incrementing and value retrieval are faster when the counter is locked, because we do not have to update the counter file all the time. You can query whether the counter is locked with the locked() method.

There is also an operator overloading interface to the File::CounterFile object. This means that you can use the ++ operator for incrementing and the -- operator for decrementing the counter, and you can interpolate counters directly into strings.

Netcount is a package for logging and displaying PPP network traffic on Linux machines. Logging is done via a small shell script which is called during the ip-up, ip-down and system startup processes and from cron, while analysis and printing is done by a program written in Python.
The display is highly customizable. You can select from different types of records as well as from different columns to print. netcount shows, among other things, network uptime, byte counts and transmission speeds (either as Tx and Rx bytes or summed up). Command line options also allow you to select from per-connection summaries as well as from daily and monthly summaries and from uptime and byte count percentages with respect to a daily and monthly total. These settings can be made permanent through the use of a configuration file which is written when using a simple command line option.
netcount uses the kernels ppp0 counter (found in /proc/net/dev), so packet filtering does not need to be installed. It is safe against this counters overflow, so there is no 2 or 4 GiB limit. It should work under any flavor of Linux, including other families than the x86 systems.

Enhancements:
- Makefile (final-words): If no "final-words" was created, an error was generated after successfull installation. Thanks to Iain Lea for pointing this out. Now a final-words file (which consists of a leading n, possibly followed by nothing) is always generated.

Tie::CountLoop is a Perl module that helps you have a counter looping in a scalar with min max and increment value.

Tie::CountLoop allows you to tie a scalar in such a way that it increments each time it is used. The tie takes 4 optionals extra arguments.

Argument 1: is the start value of the counter. (default =0).
Argument 2: is the increment value. (default = 1).
Argument 3: is the maximal value. When this value is reached, the counter is set to the minimal value (default = (2**32) -1)

Argument 4: is the minimal value. When this value is reached if we used an negative increment value, the counter is set to the maximal value (default = 0)

Argument 5: is a skipping value. If set to 3, means that you could access the counter 3 time without incrementing (defualt=1)
