Qonk 0.0.1

Qonk 0.0.1

Qonk is a small build-and-conquer strategy game with very simple rules. more>>
Qonk project is a game I wrote to learn some SDL basics. The game is a small build-and-conquer strategy game with very simple rules. A complete game only lasts for a few minutes and can be a fun break away from work or whatever youre doing.
The setting of the game is a solar system of planets. Your goal is to conquer all of the planets in the game by sending ships there. Planets that are under your control generate new ships. Simple AI players are playing against you. As you gain more experience throughout the game, more AI players have to be kicked out of bigger solar systems.
The game is currently very much in beta. I published it however in order to see whether it compiles on other machines, and to see what reactions people had on its gameplay. The game engine itself is fully functional. A lot of things have to be added to make this a mature game (like menus and stuff), but since the engine itself works, Qonk is already very playable.
How to run
In order to change between levels, Qonk exits and parameters for the game and its level have to be entered from the command line. After a game, Qonk will tell you how to start Qonk again when exited. This is because Im too lazy to write a decent menu system (everyone who is interested, may add a menu system to the source), and only interested in hacking and tuning he game engine, its graphics and obviously, game play.
Rodolfo Borges provided a small shell script that helps starting the game, saving your current level, and moving to new levels automagically. You have to edit the file to change the path where you have installed Qonk before running it.
Qonk can be given two numeric parameters, the first denoting the number of planets in the solar system, the second gives the number of enemy AI players. Successive levels of the game are defined by two such parameters.
The first levels in the game are given by parameters (6 1), (7 2), (8 3), (9 4), (10 5), (10 6), (10 7), (10 8), (10 9), (11 10), (12 11), ... I managed to get to about (35 34) before I got bored with it and started over again. I have also managed to win a (100 99) game once. That was pretty hectic.
Although the game engine is prepared to run under different modes, the game always defaults to 1024x768 resolution, and goes into fullscreen modus to run qonk. (because of beta status)
How to play
You select ships and send them out to planets, to attack or fortify them. A ship that arrives at an enemy planet dies and kills an enemy ship, residing on that planet, along with it. If no enemy ships are based on the planet, you take over the planet. Planets under your control grow new ships for you to send around.
You control white planets and white ships. Colored planets belong to the opponent players. Gray planets are not controled by a player and can easily be conquered, once its resident neutral ships are destroyed (about 2-4 of them on each neutral planet).
There are two types of planets in the solar system. There are planets orbiting around the "sun" and moons orbiting around the planets. There are as many moons as planets in each solar system. Some planets may have more moons than others. A planet is expected to generate twice as many ships as a moon in the same amount of time. Some planets/moons build ships more quickly than others. Each ship also has a random speed.
Select ships by dragging your left mouse button. A ship can only be selected for an action if it resides on a planet. Use the right mouse button to send selected ships to the nearest planet to the mouse pointer. If you want to select all of the available ships, press A.
As you conquer more planets, more ships are built in parallel. Try to conquer as many planets as possible, so that many new ships are constructed and you can reign over the solar system.
There are some extra keys that can be used:
- While pressing E, the ships of enemy players are shown, so this is kind of a cheat button
- Press P to pause and unpause the game
- Press S to save a screenshot (screenshot.bmp) of the game

TkWiCe is a free wine cellar software. more>>
TkWiCe is a free wine cellar software. As it is written in native Tcl/Tk, youve got a real chance to use it on any operating system with that interpreter on it (you can get Tcl/Tk for any Unix like Mac OS X, Linux, *BSD, AIX, HP-UX or Solaris as well as for PowerPC and Windows).
If you want to get a fast overview about your bottles (perhaps youve got to choose one?), this might be what you are looking for.
If youre more interested in writing intellectual tasting notes take a wordprocessor like LyX or OpenOffice instead. And if 100 points are the most important thing to you, please choose other points of interest than wine (and bestow the saved money). Such things never will be added to this software:
Aims
- Focus is on pleasure, not on charts.
- Function conquers eyecandy.
- Own plain text files for each wine.
- Everything about one wine fits on 1024x768 pixel at once.
- Old computers are new enough.
- No more dependencies than Tcl/Tk (not: operating system).
- Free (means: liberty *and* free of charge).
- Dont replace wine literature (as commercial solutions try).
Enhancements:
- Bugfixes in startup, the cellar book/history window, and the country selection buttons in the main window.

Perilar 0.4

Perilar 0.4

Perilar is a fast, simple computer role-playing game (CRPG), with an epic quest! more>>
Perilar is a simple, fast computer role-playing game (CRPG), with an epic quest! You will cross a vast monster-infested wilderness to the dungeons to recover ancient weapons and artifacts, then to the dragons lairs, then face the final challenge...

Version 0.4 is a beta release for designing the gameplay, and future versions will have additional art, music, and sound effects.

Save Game Warning: Savefiles from previous versions will not be compatible with later versions until 1.0. At that point, Ill make sure they are always forward-compatible, but it hampers rapid development until then. Sorry for the trouble, but at least youll get to see the new world features in each version!

History

Over a thousand years ago, the world was a peaceful but primitive place. Humans lived in tribal societies, rarely warred, and there were few dangerous animals and no monsters. Your kingdom, Perilar, was one of the safest, as it was protected by four great dragons of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water.

Where the Vampire King came from, nobody knows. He appeared in the far north and turned peaceful farmers into berserker raiders. After conquering the island kingdom of Oradon, he turned their druids to necromancy, raising armies of the dead to war on the next kingdom. Kingdom after kingdom fell, and in each, the people were slain and raised as undead warriors to assault the next kingdom.

As the army of the undead approached Perilar, the dragons closed the kingdom off with a magical seal. For a thousand years, the kingdom has been trapped inside, and none know the fate of the outside world.

In recent times, the seals have begun to fail. The Dragons have not been seen in centuries. Undead and monsters march in towards the castle of King Phalan and the village of Perilar, home to the last free people in the world. A great hero must do something about this, and you are determined to be that hero!

FreeCol is a Civilization-like game in which the player has to conquer the New World. more>>
FreeCol team aims to create an Open Source version of Colonization. At first well try to make an exact clone of Colonization.
The visuals will be brought up to date with more recent standards but will remain clean, simple and functional. Certain new features will be implemented but the gameplay and the rules will be exactly the same as the original game. Examples of modern features are: an isometric map and multiplayer support.
This clone will be developed incrementally and result in FreeCol 1.0.0 which will be an almost exact Colonization clone. Incremental development basically means that well add features one at a time. This allows us to have a running program at all times and also to release an unfinished but working game once in a while.
Once FreeCol 1.0.0 is finished well start working towards FreeCol 2.0.0. FreeCol 2 will go beyond the original Colonization and will have many new features, it will be an implementation of our (and our users) image of what Colonization 2 would have been.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes a bug that caused native units to be frozen on the map board and adds a few new features.

Dominion 2.8.2

Dominion 2.8.2

Dominion is a multi-playerworld simulation and role-playing game. more>>
Dominion is a multi-playerworld simulation and role-playing game. Each user controls a nation, making economic, political and military decisions for it.

This is a world simulation game developed initially by students at SUNY at Stony Brook, and then by students at Stony Brook and other universities. The intention is to write a game which offers the role playing potential and complexity of relations found in conquer (written by Ed Barlow, then picked up by Adam Bryant). The plan is to
extend the game by offering general descriptions of many features (such as races, magic spells, armies, spirits and technology powers). For example, the races of the world are not limited to 4 hard-coded races, but are described in a file which can be modified at any point in the game by the Game Master. The same goes for army and spirit types.

Dominion is *not* another version of conquer; things work quite differently, and we have *never* looked at the conquer source. Still, we acknowledge this most creative game which gave us our inspiration. In September 1990, the author of conquer version 5 has heard of many of the features of dominion, and has included them in conquer version 5. He has acknowledged that these ideas come from Dominion.

The Game Master is given a nation, but this nation is sort of "fragile", since it has no sectors, and such stuff. We should make it more solid, but meanwhile it is to be used mostly for its [E] command, which allows the Game Master (who logs into the game as "Gamemaster") to change the properties of a sector or of a nation.

Dominion development started in the spring of 1990, when Mark Galassi was running a game of conquer for graduate and undergraduate students at at Stony Brook. After the data file kept crashing, and a whole lot of inconsistencies were discovered, and we found that the source was too complex to be fixed, we decided to write our own replacement. Ed Barlow did a great job with conquer, and it is a great game, but it
was his first C program, and people who added to it kept the endless case statements, and the special cases, and worked on new features rather than re-writing. The original name of Dominion was Stony Brook World (sbw), but it has been named Dominion since version 1.02.

In many ways Dominion was a teaching project intended to teach many Stony Brook undergraduate CS majors to work on a large software development project. Once the project reached a certain size, people from other universities joined in the development.

One goal of dominion is that the ruler of a nation should always have many choices available on how to invest resources, each one presenting strong but distinct advantages. Conquer contains both a good and a bad example of this: you can invest metal in cities, ships or armies. Either way you get advantages, and you have to choose. On the other hand, jewels are really not used for much else than getting magic powers. You can also use them to support monsters, but that is a different order of magnitude, and few players get the monsters. In dominion, there should be several decisions you can make to invest all your resources.

Kevin Hart has been working on the CN code which allows the computer to play various nations. Starting with version 1.05, the computer-played CNs have begun posing a real challenge in the game.
