conn-close gives us possibility to get rid of entries in ip_conntrack about ESTABLISHED TCP connections. more>>
conn-close gives us possibility to get rid of entries in ip_conntrack about ESTABLISHED TCP connections that goes through our server.

conn-close script uses hping2 to send spoofed RST packets which will fool conntrack and cause specified connections to be considered by conntrack as closed (now these connections will be in ip_conntrack in CLOSE state), even though RST packets will be more likely discarded by destination host.

Information about connections is read of course from /proc/net/ip_conntrack.

Idea was taken from script seen somewhere on the internet.

Gnome Remote Connection Manager 0.1.5

Gnome Remote Connection Manager 0.1.5

Gnome Remote Connection Manager is a gnome application that stores information about remote connections. more>>
Gnome Remote Connection Manager is a gnome application that stores information
about remote connections.
It gives you a GUI program to launch applications like telnet, shh, or rdesktop. It is highly configurable as to what type of applications it launches, so you are not limited to the three listed, for example I never thought of using it for ftp, but it would be easy to setup.
GRCM uses gconf to store information about connections.
Enhancements:
- Added some missing icons.
- Fixed a callback in the Connections Dialog that made the default arguments from the connection appear when selected.

Conc 2.0.1

Conc 2.0.1

Conc is a console concentrator for Linux and Gnome. more>>
Conc is a console concentrator for Linux and Gnome. Conc project features remote maintenance of systems over IP, and concurrent connections to consoles.
Serial lines on multiple machines may be pooled into one system allowing a virtually unlimited number of consoles to be managed - ideal for large server farms, clusters or off-site server rooms.
Please feel free to try it out and send me any comments, feature requests, and bug reports.
The systems consists of three components. The first is concserv, the central daemon, that keeps logs from all the consoles and coordinates the rest of the system. When it starts, concserv spawns a number of termserv processes that control the serial lines to which the console lines are connected. The link between a termserv and concserv is encrypted and termservs may run on separate machines to concserv, communicated over TCP/IP.
The final component, conc, is the user interface. It connects to concserv over an encrypted TCP/IP link, and allows the system administrator to view the logs of a particular machine, connect to its console, add and remove consoles etc. There is also a small, text-based interface called console that allows connection to a single console.
Any number of user interface programs may run concurrently and multiple connections to the same are possible, allowing groups to work on one system. Having all the components communicate by TCP/IP allows administration of machines from off site or unifying management of co-located and local equipment.
Enhancements:
- This release improves the reliability of the connection between manager and servers, and removes the worst of the memory leaks from the client.

IANA /etc Files 2.20

IANA /etc Files 2.20

IANA /etc Files is a tool that generates /etc/services and /etc/protocols from IANA data. more>>
IANA /etc Files installs /etc/services and /etc/protocols using data from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. Included are snapshots of the data from the IANA, scripts to transform that data into the needed formats, and scripts to fetch the latest data.
Installation
The installation process is flexible and friendly to unattended installation even though, due to its simplicity, it does not use Autoconf.
For basic installation run:
make
su
make install
This creates /etc/services and /etc/protocols without using internet access.
To install in a different location, use something like:
make PREFIX=/mnt/tmp install
This would create /mnt/tmp/etc/services and /mnt/tmp/etc/protocols.
For unusual installations, "make PREFIX=/foo ETC_DIR=bar install" will create /foo/bar/services and /foo/bar/protocols.
Enhancements:
- This release contains updated data from the IANA, improvements to the test function, and support for generating stripped files.
- It is the second of a series of planned changes intended to meet the needs of distributions.

Encode::PerlIO 5.8.1

Encode::PerlIO 5.8.1

Encode::PerlIO is a detailed document on Encode and PerlIO. more>>
Encode::PerlIO is a detailed document on Encode and PerlIO.

Overview

It is very common to want to do encoding transformations when reading or writing files, network connections, pipes etc. If Perl is configured to use the new perlio IO system then Encode provides a "layer" (see PerlIO) which can transform data as it is read or written.

Here is how the blind poet would modernise the encoding:

use Encode;
open(my $iliad,:utf8,iliad.utf8);
my @epic = < $iliad >;
print $utf8 @epic;
close($utf8);
close($illiad);

In addition, the new IO system can also be configured to read/write UTF-8 encoded characters (as noted above, this is efficient):

open(my $fh,>:utf8,anything);
print $fh "Any x{0021} string N{SMILEY FACE}n";

Either of the above forms of "layer" specifications can be made the default for a lexical scope with the use open ... pragma. See open.

Once a handle is open, its layers can be altered using binmode.

Without any such configuration, or if Perl itself is built using the systems own IO, then write operations assume that the file handle accepts only bytes and will die if a character larger than 255 is written to the handle. When reading, each octet from the handle becomes a byte-in-a-character. Note that this default is the same behaviour as bytes-only languages (including Perl before v5.6) would have, and is sufficient to handle native 8-bit encodings e.g. iso-8859-1, EBCDIC etc. and any legacy mechanisms for handling other encodings and binary data.
In other cases, it is the programs responsibility to transform characters into bytes using the API above before doing writes, and to transform the bytes read from a handle into characters before doing "character operations" (e.g. lc, /W+/, ...).

You can also use PerlIO to convert larger amounts of data you dont want to bring into memory. For example, to convert between ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1) and UTF-8 (or UTF-EBCDIC in EBCDIC machines):

open(F, ":utf8", "data.utf") or die $!;
while (< F >) { print G }

# Could also do "print G < F >" but that would pull
# the whole file into memory just to write it out again.

More examples:

open(my $f, ":encoding(iso-8859-2)")
open(my $h, ">:encoding(latin9)") # iso-8859-15

NetworkManager 0.6.5

NetworkManager 0.6.5

NetworkManager is a network connection manager. more>>
NetworkManager program is a network connection manager for most RPM and Debian-based distros.

Supports Ethernet, WiFi, VPN connections.

Networking on Linux should not suck like it does right now for the desktop user. The desktop user should never need to use the command-line to configure their network; it should "Just Work" as automatically as possible and intrude as little as possible into the users workflow.

The computer should use the wired network connection when its plugged in, but automatically switch to a wireless connection when the user unplugs it and walks away from the desk.

Likewise, when the user plugs the computer back in, the computer should switch back to the wired connection. The user should, most times, not even notice that their connection has has been managed for them; they should simply see uninterrupted network connectivity.

Flexible, Extendable, and Open

The most important pieces of NetworkManager are desktop-environment and distribution agnostic, functioning just as well in Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc. across distributions like Fedora Core, Debian, Gentoo, and Slackware.

And since the NetworkManager components communicate with each other using dbus, its easy to rip out and replace any of the User Interface pieces at any time.

Application Integration

Using the awesome power and flexibility of dbus and hal, NetworkManager provides facilities for other desktop applications like browsers and email clients to be aware of the networks state and adjust their operation accordingly for features like offline operation.

tsocks 1.8

tsocks 1.8

tsocks provides transparent network access through a SOCKS version 4 or 5 proxy (usually on a firewall). more>>
tsocks provides transparent network access through a SOCKS version 4 or 5 proxy (usually on a firewall).

SOCKS servers are a form of proxy that are commonly used in firewalled LAN environments to allow access between networks, and often to the Internet. The problem is that most applications dont know how to gain access through SOCKS servers. This means that network based applications that dont understand SOCKS are very limited in networks they can reach. An example of this is simple telnet.

tsocks role is to allow these non SOCKS aware applications (e.g telnet, ssh, ftp etc) to use SOCKS without any modification. It does this by intercepting the calls that applications make to establish network connections and negotating them through a SOCKS server as necessary. If youre on a network firewalled from the internet with a SOCKS server for outside access, telnet cant use this server and thus cant telnet out to the Internet., sou you cannot get out.

tsocks is based on the shared library interceptor concept. Through use of the LD_PRELOAD environment variable or the /etc/ld.so.preload file tsocks is automatically loaded into the process space of every executed program. From there it overrides the normal connect() function by providing its own. Thus when an application calls connect() to establish a TCP connection it instead passes control to tsocks. tsocks determines if the connection needs to be made via a SOCKS server (by checking /etc/tsocks.conf) and negotiates the connection if so (through use of the real connect() function )

Useful Traffic Accounting Dragon 0.4

Useful Traffic Accounting Dragon 0.4

Useful Traffic Accounting Dragon is a traffic accounter that actually gives useful information about traffic. more>>
Useful Traffic Accounting Dragon is a traffic accounter that actually gives useful information about traffic instead of stupidly counting incoming/outgoing packets.
Dragon accounts traffic by user, program and timestamp and puts this information into useful correlation.
Dragon is implemented as a Perl script for the backend, using /etc/passwd to automatically get information about user accounts, /proc/net/ to get information about open connections and /proc/ to get information about running processes and which processes currently use which network connection.
All this information can be combined so you can actually see what user caused which traffic using what program and when it happened.
All this information is acquired automatically so the minimal configuration necessary is to tell dragon where it can find its MySQL database.
Enhancements:
Features:
- cleanup on CTRL-C
- add patch for Linux Kernel 2.6.17.7
- for now, graphs are disabled in the webfrontend
- webfrontend has now Total, User and Program tabs
Bugfixes:
- forgot to close a filedescriptor fixed
- use leading zeroes on port numbers in messages about connections that no longer exist
- really fix wait for next minute
