Free configuring software for linux

The configure project is a Makefile generator which uses project description files to create simple Makefiles.
It stives to keep the generated code as simple as possible
Enhancements:
- The program has been fully rewritten, and has migrated to libSystem in place of libutils.
- It now supports source archive generation and installation rules.
- The documentation has been updated.

Configuration HOWTO would be the main documentation for configuring most common hardware and services.

This document is one of the most important for LDP, because by configuring hardware and software you can get your own Linux box. This HOWTO was born in the Golden Age of developers, mainly for the command line. As it became too big and old for the current distros, I rewrote it more simple as I could.

Fundamentally, to configure the system, Linux users have to write some configuration files. To do it easyer, today programs and wizards are avaliable to manage them. This programs may be quite different for the various distributions.

In this HOWTO, I will speak about Mandrake-Linux and about Red Hat.

PWC-Config is a graphical user interface for configuring all Web cameras supported by the PWC driver.

To install follow these steps:

First, as your normal user, type in the following:
./configure
make

Once that finishes, the program will be installed into the src directory.
Alternatively, by logging in as root you can install it into
/usr/local/bin/cam by typing:

make install

Fontconfig is a library for configuring and customizing font access.

Font Configuration Library contains two essential modules, the configuration module which builds an internal configuration from XML files and the matching module which accepts font patterns and returns the nearest matching font.

The configuration module consists of the FcConfig datatype, libexpat and FcConfigParse which walks over an XML tree and ammends a configuration with data found within. From an external perspective, configuration of the library consists of generating a valid XML tree and feeding that to FcConfigParse.

The only other mechanism provided to applications for changing the running configuration is to add fonts and directories to the list of application-provided font files.

The intent is to make font configurations relatively static, and shared by as many applications as possible.

It is hoped that this will lead to more stable font selection when passing names from one application to another. XML was chosen as a configuration file format because it provides a format which is easy for external agents to edit while retaining the correct structure and syntax.

Font configuration is separate from font matching; applications needing to do their own matching can access the available fonts from the library and perform private matching.

The intent is to permit applications to pick and choose appropriate functionality from the library instead of forcing them to choose between this library and a private configuration mechanism.

The hope is that this will ensure that configuration of fonts for all applications can be centralized in one place. Centralizing font configuration will simplify and regularize font installation and customization.

network-config is a simple network configuration tool.

Network-config is a simple and easy to use program that helps configuring the network interfaces for linux-based operating systems. It allows to have multiple configurations for the same computer and to easy configure NAT for internet sharing.

It can also be used to scan for wireless networks. It is written in perl and uses gtk2+, but also works as a command line program.

Csoun5 is a complete rewriten of the Csound music synthesis system.

Csound is a sound and music synthesis system, providing facilities for composition and performance over a wide range of platforms.

It is not restricted to any style of music, having been used for many years in at least classical, pop, techno, ambient...

Installation:

If your distribution has a file named ./configure, build using the instructions in INSTALL, otherwise, find a Makefile that matches your system in the csound directory. Rename it to Makefile, and then edit it following the instructions in its comments.

A GNU Build System can be constructed as follows:

autoreconf -i
./configure
make

The instructions in INSTALL only apply to a system with a ./configure script.

SHARED LIBRARIES

By default, a system with a ./configure script will not build shared libraries. On Cygwin, one can build a Csound DDL that can be used without the Cygwin DLL by configuring with the command:

./configure --enable-cygwin=no --enable-shared=yes

Autoconf project is an extensible package of m4 macros that produce shell scripts to automatically configure software source code packages.

These scripts can adapt the packages to many kinds of UNIX-like systems without manual user intervention. Autoconf creates a configuration script for a package from a template file that lists the operating system features that the package can use, in the form of m4 macro calls.

Producing configuration scripts using Autoconf requires GNU m4. You must install GNU m4 (version 1.4 or later) before configuring Autoconf, so that Autoconfs configure script can find it. The configuration scripts produced by Autoconf are self-contained, so their users do not need to have Autoconf (or GNU m4).

FluxConf is a set of 3 programs for configuring fluxbox. FluxConf project is simple but you can configure almost everything.
HOWTO:
fluxconf:
Run fluxconf, then make your changes. When you want to apply your changes press the "Save" button, go to the fluxbox menu (configuration section) and press "Restart". This is needed to make fluxbox reading your changes.
Once everything Ive just wrote is done, you can press "Let fluxbox change the conf" button then quit the app ("Quit" button)
fluxkeys:
Nothing complicated, to add a keybind line press the "Add" button, fill the entry as desired. To remove an entry just let the first textbox of the line blank. Once youre done, press "Save" button.
fluxmenu: Gtk2 ONLY !!
Its heavily based on drag&drop, you can edit each entry, add or del what you want. "Save" will just save, the changes are made instantly.
