Open Administration for Schools 2.40

Open Administration for Schools 2.40

Open Administration for Schools is a Web-based school administration package. more>>
Open Admin for Schools is a School Administration Program. It is a freely available, open source software package and is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Open Administration for Schools project is entirely web based and can run from a centrally located division wide server or a single computer in a school. It is designed to support an entire division on one or more central computers but can also work just fine for a single school.
Currently several school divisions use this approach and have 15+ schools on a single central server. This is because it is designed to be lightweight both in server resource requirements and in communication bandwidth.
It is secure. Each school has two or more virtual websites and each is protected with password(s). One site, the admin site, is used by the school office and another, the teacher site, is used by teachers in the classroom.
The teacher site also has password access for entering attendance by teachers and also uses cookies that expire in a short period, further limiting access. Another site, a parent/student site, is controlled by parent/student userids and passwords. A fourth virtual site may be used by school liason officers from outside agencies to give them a slightly different access to school information. (Community Schools)
Main features:
- Demographics - It stores student and family information that can be viewed and printed in a variety of ways.
- Attendance - Attendance can be entered either by secretaries in the school office or by teachers in the classroom. It features the ability to do different numbers of periods per day for elementary grades vs high school and middle years. This will allow elementary classes to have 2 classes per day (AM/PM) with a homeroom teacher while higher grades can have attendance done on a per subject period basis (and be subject based). Attendance reports are integrated with report cards/progress reports. A variety of attendance reports are available. A variety of attendance entry methods are available for use by teachers and/or secretaries to allow it to integrate with normal school practice.
- Discipline - A simple discipline module to track student discipline events and track outcomes, etc. Behaviours may be categorized and statistical reports may be printed. Enrollment changes are also posted into this system.
- Report Card System - a flexible reporting system with per subject objectives (up to 20), integrated attendance reporting, etc. All report cards are printed as PDF reports and may include a school logo. All subjects may have unlimited length text comments, and can have any desired ordering. Attendance reporting will now do days open, days enrolled, days absent, and times late as standard.
- IEP (Special Needs) Site that is integrated at the division level that allows special needs teachers to tailor individual student programs that can be viewed from each schools teacher site. This includes the ability to add student medical history, testing done, student teams (and responsibilities), and objectives chosen from lists of thousands, categorized in a variety of ways. There can be up to 32 objectives per subject and each subject is specific to that particular child. His/her program would consist of a variety of subjects in areas such as fine motor control, etc.
- This system can generate progress reports (for use with the report card system) as well as a comprehensive IEP report containing the yearly plan for the child. This IEP can also viewed from the teacher site, to ensure compliance throughout the year.
- Export/Import Modules - to allow students to easily transfer schools within divisions without re-entry of demographic information. Export of data to other programs. Export of data to Provincial authorities via an automated XML based transfer mechanism.
- Saskatchewan SDS support for direct XML transfers of student demographic, subject and enrollment marks to provincial authorities.
- Online Gradebook to allow teachers to enter marks and assessments onine from school or home. It can group and weight assessment items and post directly into the report card system.
- Parent Viewing scripts to allow parents to view attendance, gradebook(where allowed), and report card marks. This is easily integrated into existing school sites.
- Upcoming: Family functions, Parent-Teacher Interview Scheduling, Wherever schools want to go...
- Further out... Multi-language support (demand for a Spanish version exists currently), Student timetabling.
Enhancements:
- A new Fees System to allow fee charging (predefined or new, with various groups), invoice printing, payments and receipts, and the ability to export summary journal transactions to an external accounting program.
- A new teacher logout to remove session data has been added.
- There is a new 70 page User Documentation PDF and a 40 page Administration Documentation PDF (also available in HTML versions).

3D Spatialization of Sound

3D Spatialization of Sound

3D Spatialization of Sound is a Linux/X11 port of the 3D spatializer library from the CRC. more>>
3D Spatialization of Sound is a Linux/X11 port of the 3D spatializer library from the CRC.

This program creates "directional" stereo sound from mono source. CRC folks told me I shouldnt have raised the sampling frequency without adjusting other stuff.

Oh well. This was a proof-of-concept type project anyway. I think to get correct 3D effect, you need to drop sampling rate back to 11025.

To Build the X11 implementation:

1. make
2. cp audio-filter /usr/local/bin
3. mpg123 -m -s some_music.mp3 | audio-filter | aplay -S -s 44100 -f s16l -

audio-filter is implemented as a filter, it reads signed 16 bit mono input at 44100 khz from stdin, and outputs signed 16 bit stereo, 44100 khz output to stdout. You can replace mpg123 with any sound source generating signed 16 bit 44100 khz mono signal. "aplay" is a sound player utility which comes with ALSA linux sound driver. You can use "play" from the sox package, or "ampctl", or any other sound player that would read 44100 khz, signed 16 bit stereo raw data from stdin. For "sox" play script, you would replace "aplay" command line with "play -c 2 -f s -r 44100 -s w -t raw -"

If everything is good, a 640x480 window will come up, with some cryptic writing on the top, a filled circle with an arrow pointing right, and a empty circle slightly to the right of the circle with arrow.

NOTE, that just like in the original Windows implementation, the axiss are reversed. The arrow on the "head" is pointing "forward". So, in the default startup configuration, the sound is located in front of the listener. Moving the sound source "up" moves it to the left of the listener, and "down", to the right. You can visualize this well if you turn your monitor 90 degrees counter
clock wise.

The filled circle with an arrow is your "head"
The empty circle is the "sound source"

You can move the "sound source" around by clicking the mouse at any position in the window, or by clicking on the "sound source" circle, and dragging it to the desired position. Soundfield will be dynamically updated as you do this.

You can move the "head" by moving the mouse to desired position, and right-clicking. The "head" icon will move to the new position and soundfield will be updated.

Realms of Rivalry

Realms of Rivalry

Realms of Rivalry is an online tactical rpg. more>>
Realms of Rivalry is an online tactical rpg. Play short skirmishes in random-generated game worlds.
The game can be summarized as an online graphical turn-based strategy/rpg game where you can play short tactical skirmishes with 2-4 players in small random-generated game worlds. The game is free and can be played either as an applet or downloadable client.
The time-limited turns (30-90 secs) give the game a semi-realtime feel, and the game has sometimes been characterized as "chess on steroids".
Main features:
- Community friendly game lobby where you can chat with others and join realms.
- Up to 4 players simultaneously battling on the same realm.
- Players control teams of 3 characters: Warrior, Archer and Mage.
- Time-limited turn-based gameplay.
- Random-generated game worlds (realms).
- CPU controlled monsters.
- Several weapons, armor, traps and other items.
- Occlusion calculation used in combat situations.
- Interrupts.
- Different types of terrain.
- Buy & sell items at vendors.
- Monster respawning.
- Ingame chat.
- Detailed end-of-game summary panel.
Explore the map and kill creatures to obtain weapons, potions, runes, traps and more to aid you in your quest for domination!
The game development has been very "test-driven" in the sense that the game quickly was made playable and that features and changes were added and removed continuously during development. This hopefully improves gameplay, but of course at the expense of dramatically increased development time.
Realms of rivalry was never intended to "soothe the masses", but were made entirely to match the game that we ourselves would like to play - something we have done for many, many hours :-) But of course, some of you might enjoy this game aswell, and that is why we decided to share it with you!.

Arithmetic Operations Simulation Library 0.01

Arithmetic Operations Simulation Library 0.01

Arithmetic Operations Simulation Librarys aim is to develop an open source library to simulate heavy arithmetic operations. more>>
Arithmetic Operations Simulation Librarys aim is to develop an open source library to simulate heavy arithmetic operations efficiently.
Finding different ways to solve a problem has been an interesting way to relax for many people. Not only they derive some kicks out of it, but as a side effect they develop much deeper insight into the problems enabling them to work out solutions under different constraints easily.
Here you will find discussion/hints to solve some common programming problems in efficient ways, supported with code that you can try.
DSP Programming Tricks
Often support for many heavy arithmetic operations goes missing to reduce the chip cost for marketability reasons, or during chip development stages. And we programmers have to make for the lack of these.
Accessing recent N items in history
This problem attracted my attention during DSP guest lectures by Mr. Ganesh Bhokare at PUCSD in later half of 2005. Various programming solutions to this problem would be.
Maintain a circular buffer in an array of N (or N+1) items. This will require support for MOD operation.
In case N is a power of 2, bitwise-anding with (N-1) can be used in place of MOD.
If neither N is a power of 2, nor MOD support is available?
Enhancements:
- This version supports finding the first 1/0 bit from left/right (lsb/msb), 16-bit unsigned numbers multiplication, division and mod operations, and also special cases of division by 3.

Parallel Virtual File System 1.6.3

Parallel Virtual File System 1.6.3

Parallel Virtual File System is a parallel file system for clusters of PCs more>>
The goal of the Parallel Virtual File System (PVFS) Project is to explore the design, implementation, and uses of parallel I/O. PVFS serves as both a platform for parallel I/O research as well as a production file system for the cluster computing community. PVFS is currently targeted at clusters of workstations, or Beowulfs.
The PVFS project is conducted jointly between The Parallel Architecture Research Laboratory at Clemson University and The Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory.
Additional funding for the PVFS project comes from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Code 930 and The National Computational Science Alliance through the National Science Foundations Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure.
Main features:
- Compatibility with existing binaries
- Ease of installation
- User-controlled striping of files across nodes
- Multiple interfaces, including a MPI-IO interface via ROMIO
- Utilizes commodity network and storage hardware
PVFS supports the UNIX I/O interface and allows existing UNIX I/O programs to use PVFS files without recompiling. The familiar UNIX file tools (ls, cp, rm, etc.) will all operate on PVFS files and directories as well. This is accomplished via a Linux kernel module which is provided as a separate package.
PVFS is easy to install. The Quick Start page describes how to set up a simple installation. Scripts and test applications are included to help with configuration, testing for correct operation, and performance evaluation.
PVFS stripes file data across multiple disks in different nodes in a cluster. By spreading out file data in this manner, larger files can be created, potential bandwidth is increased, and network bottlenecks are minimized. A 64-bit interface is implemented as well, allowing large (more than 2GB) files to be created and accessed.
Enhancements:
- fixes to build under redhat 2.4.20-20.9 kernel
- checks for missing headers on ancient 2.4 kernels
- removal of unused fields from metadata and control messages

txObject Python Modules 1.3.9

txObject Python Modules 1.3.9

The txObject Python Modules provide an interface to the txObject Application Tool Kit and Libraries. more>>
The txObject Python Modules provide an interface to the txObject Application Tool Kit and Libraries. txObject ATK provides both embedded and application level projects a five-layer framework. Each layer offers a unified set of tools that allows programmers to focus their development efforts.
A correlation can be made between txObject ATK and Sun Microsystems Inc. Java Language. txObject ATK has many of the advantages Java has, but without some of the performance issues commonly associated with the Java Language. Javas initial advantages are its platform independent built-in and publicly available support libraries. Due to the basic nature of Java, its libraries have a common object-oriented feel and data flow model. txObject ATK has accomplished a similar Java-like environment for C++.
Another correlation can be made between txObject ATK and the CORBA Standards. As demand increases for applications to run in distributed environments and on multiple platforms, projects have had a new added complexity to their traditional development cycle. txObject ATK greatly decreases such complexity in a similar way CORBA does but with two fundamental differences. The first distinction is that txObject ATK is a tightly coupled peer-to-peer distributed system, where CORBA is a loosely coupled client-server model. The second division is that txObject ATK distributed objects are state and transaction consistent. CORBA provides distributed object interfaces without state.
txObject ATK is ideal for developing embedded applications. It has been optimized for memory and CPU constrained systems. The entire software package is comprised of 5,000 lines of class declaration code and 10,000 lines of implementation code. Further reading shall account for the size of each layer.
Each layer of the txObject ATK is a foundation for every successive layer. In order for a particular layer to operate, it requires the layers below it but not the ones above. Since layer 1 is the base for all other layers, close attention should be paid. Each component in layer 1 will be used intimately throughout layers 2-5.
Main features:
- Layer 1 - Object Library
- Layer 2 - I/O & Timers
- Layer 3 - Object-Oriented Threads
- Layer 4 - Inter-Process Communication
- Layer 5 - True Distributed Object Comm. (Object Replication)

Solid Of Rotation 1.3.0

Solid Of Rotation is a 3D graphic editor. more>>
There is quite a bit of history on this item. One of the assignments in a computer graphics course at the University of Victoria was to rotate a number of Bezier curves around an axis and display the result in 3D using a single light source.

This was on Sun Sparcs using X. Since then the program has mutated to match my platform preference at a given time (DOS, Windows, Linux).

The latest mutation has been to SDL/OpenGL and the result runs happily on Linux and Windows. Screenshot junkies might find the following of interest:
