Chess Training Tools 1.2.14

Chess Training Tools 1.2.14

Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. more>>
Chess Training Tools is a collection of chess training tools. It includes a chess visualization trainer that teaches chess visualization by drilling you on the color of a particular square, and also on your ability to tell if two squares are the same color, if two (or three) squares are on the same diagonal, if two squares are a knight move apart, or if two squares are two knight moves apart.
This is a program that I wrote for my own use to improve my chess visualization ability. I decided to share it with other players, since I believe they can benefit from it. It basically helps you remember what color the squares are, how the pieces move, and so on, all in your head.
It does so by posing you various excercises that, if practiced every day, will let you visualize positions without the aid of a board.
I use this tool every day. You may want to use it the way I do, or you could develop your own method of training. I work my way through the panels, doing 20 of each excercise. I proceed Color->Same Color->Diagonal 2->Diagonal 3->Knight->Knight 2->Mate.
Then, after all of that I play a game against Vince. Start slow, by either lagging the display by one ply, or by blanking out one quadrant. Work your way up to the 7 ply and four quadrants.
Enhancements:
- This release added undo, or move takeback to the PlayTest ("Vince").

Tonic Chess bridge4

Tonic Chess bridge4

Tonic Chess project is an online chess software. more>>
Tonic Chess project is an online chess software.

Tonic is a graphical interface for playing online chess. It is based on Jin.

From now on Tonic is really open source software (and free as in libre as well) - I managed (I had some problems last time I tried) to import source to cvs sourceforge repository. It is a bridge2 release source with few little modifications. You can read how to get it from cvs here. If you are impatient pastenenter in console:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@tonic-chess.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/tonic-chess login

When prompted for password just hit enter. And then:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@tonic-chess.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/tonic-chess co -P tonic

You should see a list of files downloaded from cvs repository. If you are a non-console user (i.e. Windows or Mac user) I recommend visiting this site. I myself use Linux for development. And Netbeans sometimes as you could figure out from examining the contents of tonic directory. So, enjoy the opensourceness of Tonic!

I uploaded new screenshot to Tonic project site. It is Tonic in Aero GTK engine tuxedo. Quite a peculiar engine imo, but you can use other GTK engines if you run Tonic in Java 6 aka Mustang (you know you can get it from here, dont you?) I test Tonic with Mustang and Ive problems with tray icon. After some searching Ive realized why Tonic crashed under Java 6 - the problem was tray.jar plugin and its dependencies - tray.so or tray.dll, so if you want to run Tonic on Java 6 move them away from theirs directory. Ive written a class for tray icon using new desktop API from Mustang, but it doesnt work as expected in KDE (tray icon is invisible) ; GNOME is better, but I have to work on the popup menu. Well, what could I say? Mustang is in beta stage, but it has some goodies to wait for (early splashscreen, access to tab component, ...).

BabyChess 16

BabyChess 16

BabyChess is a chess program. more>>
BabyChess is a chess program. You can edit chess games, play chess on the internet, and play locally against engines.
BabyChess is distributed as free software under the terms of the GNU GPL.
Main features:
- Games between humans and/or engines can be played in the match window. XBoard engines are supported.
- The chess position editor lets you edit a chess position, and save it in FEN notation, as used by other chess programs.
- The chess game editor understands PGN notation.
- The game archive editor reads PGN files that contain any number of chess games. It displays a list of all games and lets you edit those games using the game editor.
- The ICS client connects you to an Internet Chess Server and lets you play games against human opponents.
- The "evaluator" of BabyChess is a chess engine that uses its own communication protocol. It is not an XBoard engine. This program is given a FEN position as an argument and analyzes the position. During the thinking process, information about the current best move and more is written.
- The game editor uses the chess evaluator to analyze chess positions.
- Internally, the evaluator uses 64 bit numbers even on 32 bit systems, meaning it is possible to analyze more than 2 billion positions on PCs.
- This program implements an XBoard chess engine. It uses the evaluator as a backend.
- In addition to the standard algebraic notation (SAN). French, German and Dutch notations are supported. Figurine notation is also supported, also the current fonts dont make it look good. New notations can be created.

Chessweb is a J2EE chess game Website. more>>
Chessweb is a J2EE chess game Website. It is a pure Java servlet implementation of a two-player chess game.

Two players log into the Web site, see an image of the current board in their browser, and make their moves.

The differentiating features of chessweb (e.g. versus WinBoard / XBoard) is that its an extremely lightweight implementation written completely in Java (nothing more than an app server and browser is required).

Furthermore, the client end is DHTML only, and verified to works with FireFox 1.0.6 and IE 6.

IRC-Chess 0.1

IRC-Chess 0.1

IRC-Chess project is a 2-player chess game for IRC which turns a computer into an IRC chess bot. more>>
IRC-Chess project is a 2-player chess game for IRC which turns a computer into an IRC chess bot.

It consists of a Java chess server, with frontend scripts to convert an IRC client into a chess bot. Players then communicate with the bot using standard IRC commands, and dont require any special software to play.

Frontend scripts are available for IRSSI and X-Chat.

The client is merely responsible for interpreting this data and displaying it. In this way, porting the system to a variety of IRC clients is very simple, since
the client script will be short, and effectively contain no code specific to the game being played.

In other words, the Java part is smart. The script is dumb and is just there to make things look pretty.

This idea works. Currently, client scripts have been designed for RSSI and XChat. Since both these programs use Perl for scripting, the scripts are practically identical, with a few client specific modifications.

Porting this script to other IRC clients shouldnt be too much of a hassle, since its just the frontend thats ported, not the chess game itself. Anyone wanting to create frontend scripts for other IRC clients, please feel free to do so.

The PROTOCOL file describes exactly what needs to be done.

Chess::PGN::Parse is a Perl module that reads and parses PGN (Portable Game Notation) Chess files.

}

use Chess::PGN::Parse;
my $text ="";
{
local $INPUT_RECORD_SEPARATOR = undef;
open PGN "< $pgnfile" or die;
$text = ;
close $text;
}
# reads from string instead of a file
my $pgn = new Chess::PGN::Parse undef, $text;
while ($pgn->read_game()) {
print $pgn->white, ", " , $pgn->black, ", ",
$pgn->result, ", ",
$pgn->game, "n";
}

use Chess::PGN::Parse;
my $pgnfile = "kk_2001.pgn";
my $pgn = new Chess::PGN::Parse $pgnfile
or die "cant open $pgnfilen";
my @games = $pgn->smart_read_all();

Chess::PGN::Parse offers a range of methods to read and manipulate Portable Game Notation files. PGN files contain chess games produced by chess programs following a standard format (http://www.schachprobleme.de/chessml/faq/pgn/). It is among the preferred means of chess games distribution. Being a public, well established standard, PGN is understood by many chess archive programs. Parsing simple PGN files is not difficult. However, dealing with some of the intricacies of the Standard is less than trivial. This module offers a clean handle toward reading and parsing complex PGN files.

A PGN file has several tags, which are key/values pairs at the header of each game, in the format [key "value"]
After the header, the game follows. A string of numbered chess moves, optionally interrupted by braced comments and recursive parenthesized variants and comments. While dealing with simple braced comments is straightforward, parsing nested comments can give you more than a headache.

Chess::PGN::Parse most immediate methods are: read_game() reads one game, separating the tags and the game text.

parse_game() parse the current game, and stores the moves into an
array and optionally saves the comments into an array of hashes
for furter usage. It can deal with nested comments and recursive
variations.

quick_parse_game() Same as the above, but doesnt save the comments,
which are just stripped from the text. It cant deal with nested
comments. Should be the preferred method when we know that we are
dealing with simple PGNs.

smart_parse_game() Best of the above methods. A preliminary check
will call parse_game() or quick_parse_game(), depending on the
presence of nested comments in the game.

read_all(), quick_read_all(), smart_read_all() will read all the records
in the current PGN file and return an array of hashes with all the
parsed details from the games.
