Relax and Recover 1.2
Relax and Recover (abbreviated rear) is a highly modular disaster recovery framework for GNU/Linux based systems. more>>
Relax and Recover (abbreviated rear) is a highly modular disaster recovery framework for GNU/Linux based systems.
The disaster recovery information (and maybe the backups) can be stored via the network, local on hard disks or USB devices, DVD/CD-R, tape, etc. The result is also a bootable image that is capable of booting via PXE, DVD/CD and tape (OBDR).
Main features:
- Focus on Disaster Recovery
- Modular concept
- For Linux and other Unix-like operations systems
- No external dependancies - use only standard software supplied with the distribution
- encryption (optional) - openssl ?
- Linux: kernel > 2.6 supported (no kernel 2.2/2.4 support !)
- User friendly - minimal output, use log file for error messages and details
The aim is to make rear as least demanding as possible, it will require only the applications neccessary to fulfill the job rear is configured for. All other applications will be copied to the rescue system if they are present.
Enhancements:
- Added SELinux suppport for NETFS Did restore tests with NETFS - see video 2006-08-31 GSS
- Added NETFS support BACKUP=NETFS 2006-08-30 GSS
- finally fixed bug in mkrescue-functions.sh about c0d0p 0 (DEVwP=1)
- Added RHEL ES/AS support 2006-07-21 GD
- start the NFS/CIFS tar backup-restore cyclus
- added support for Software RAID

CD Shell 2.1.6
CD Shell is a bootable CD or DVD console interface and script interpreter. more>>
CD Shell is a scriptable menu system that provides the ability to create interactive multi-boot optical discs. It will make PC-bootable compact discs or DVDs that can select from several program loaders or kernels located on the disc, or boot from other local disk drives that are attached to the system.
This utility is based heavily on concepts pioneered by Bart Lagerweij in his great program Diskem1x. CD Shell provides similar functionality to Diskem1x along with many new original features, such as an advanced scripting language, graphics, and mouse support. It also has the ability to interface with other great programs such as isolinux/memdisk, Ranish Partition Manager, and Memtest86+.
CD Shell is free for non-commercial use. The program and its source code is distributed under the NASM License. The distribution and use of some optional components is restricted by their respective licenses.
Enhancements:
- changed behavior of display.message to interpret a backslash as a single-character quote if not recognized as an escape sequence (suggested by Erwin Veermans of the Ultimate Boot CD project)
- isolinux patches as suggested by Charles Appel of the Ultimage Boot CD project
- patched a bug in isolinux that would display some garbage characters when loading a kernel (just before Ready)
- changed behavior for the display command to not show a splash screen unless isolinux was invoked with an empty command line
- incorporated changes to chooser script
- allow onEscape action when user quits the menu
- allow per-item exececute-on-select commands
- fixed a bug where text in the message window wasnt being updated correctly

QCat 0.5
Qcat is a simple media catalog. more>>
Qcat is a simple media catalog. It can import data from WhereIsIt. The project is still in pre-alpha stage, so there are no sources available.
Compile:
1. download the source
2.untar it - tar -xzvf qcat-0.5-src.tar.gz
3. cd qcat-dist-0.5
4. here is the tricky part.
Perhaps you use QT 3.3.x. So to compile you have export QT_DIR and PATH for QT4.
Check where is installed QT4. For example if QT4 is in /opt/qt4 type these commands:
export QT_DIR=/opt/qt4
export PATH=/opt/qt4/bin:$PATH
5. run qmake
6. make
7. If all is ok, the result shall be an executable file in qcat-dist-0.5/bin named qcat
8. run it and enjoy.
Installation:
Ive not written any install target, script or so on, so you can just copy "qcat" file somewhere in you path. The install script/target is is in my TODO list.
Some instructions:
This program use SQlite for db backend. During its first run it will create file in ~/.config/QCat in which it will store the configuration. Also it will create your first catalog in your home directory. It will be named defaultCatalog.qcat.
If you want to make shortcut for your CD/DVD drive, go to Tools - Manage Drives. There you can add alias for this drive or any other folder. If you chose that this is optical drive, you have to specify its drive node in /dev/ so the program can read CD/DVD label and mount/unmount the media in it.
In Tools - Manage Icons you can change some of the default icons. They are stored in DB.
Import menu - here you can try to import WhereIsIt xml file. Please notify that if you have groups defined in WhereIsIt file, the hierarchy will be lost. (WherIsIt do not export it), so you have to arrange your disks again. You can use Drag and Drop. At this point only Disk Groups and Disks can be moved.
Saving - there is no need to save your changes, They are committed instantly. Shame on me. I havent write transactions yet.
Locking the catalog - Select catalog properties and click Lock icon. Please note that the passwords are kept in plain text. Shame on me again, so you can just avoid password protection and wait for some new version.
Feel free to explorer. It is almost certain there are plenty of bugs.

Amanda CDRW-Taper 0.4
Amanda CDRW-Taper is a drop-in replacement for the taper component of the Amanda backup system. more>>
Amanda is a client/server application for making remote backups. While originating from a UNIX environment, it also supports backups of windows machines (via the smbclient utility). Client software for other machines is planned. See the Amanda homepage for details.
Amanda CDRW-Taper program is a drop-in replacement for the taper component of the Amanda backup system. CDRW-Taper makes it possible to dump backups to CD-RW, DVD+RW or DVD-RW instead of tape. CDRW-Taper is licensed under the GNU general public license (version 2) (see COPYING for more information).
The original version of the CDRW-Taper simply copied the backed up data from Amandas holding disk to an intermediate directory. After the backup was finished, the CDRW-Taper program created an ISO-9660 image from the intermediate directory which was burnt on a CDRW.
After using this setup for about half a year it became clear, that CDRW media were simply too small for our purposes. While Amanda does support tape changers, the CDRW-Taper has no such equivalent.
One option was to move to a larger type of media, like DVD+R or "double density" CDRW, without changing the software. The other, at that time cheaper option was to change the software to emulate some kind of CDRW changer.
The idea is to have the taper copy the backed up data to several intermediate directories, each representing a single CDRW. After the backup is finished, these can be burnt to CDRW one by one. The changing of the media can be done manually.
The nice thing about this is that this way you can also back up to hard disk. Diskspace has become cheap, so you can have all of your backups available online, and still burn them all on removable media (to be stored in a safe place).
Meanwhile, DVD+RW have become sufficiently cheap to present an interesting alternative to the clumsy manual process involved with backups to multiple CDRW. Therefore, the current version has been extended to support backup to DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW media as well, using the dvd+rw-tools.

scdbackup 0.8.8
scdbackup is a simplified CD/DVD backup program for Linux. more>>
scdbackup is a simplified CD/DVD backup program for Linux. It can back up large amounts of data on one or more media, with no special tools needed for reading the backup. scdbackup supports ISO9660 filesystems and afio archives.
Its special features are automatic division of data into multiple volumes, verification of write success, and incremental backups. An information script on each volume tells where a certain file may be found. CDs get written via cdrecord. DVDs get written via growisofs.
Purpose:
- backup large amounts of data on one or more CDs or DVDs,
- simple (therefore no excuse not to do the backup),
- no special tool needed for reading the backup
Formats:
- ISO9660 file systems (readable after : mount )
- afio archives (readable by : afio ... /dev/cdrom)
Special features:
- Breaks the 650 MB / 4.7 GB limits (more than one CD / DVD )
- Information script on each CD tells where a certain file may be found
- Collision test with renaming avoids aborting of mkisofs
- Interrupted backups can be resumed at the start of the failed piece
- Verification of resulting CDs possible by recorded checksums
- Incremental backups with an arbitrary number of levels
- Multi user safe by use of a locking protocol
Hardware requirements:
A CD recorder suitable for cdrecord (most SCSI or ATAPI writers, see also list of drives ) It has to be reachable via a SCSI address. On modern Linux systems, other connection types can be used via an emulated SCSI bus. Recent versions of cdrecord got direct support for IDE burners via address prefixes ATAPI: and ATA: .
As an alternative, it is possible to use cdrskin, based on libburn.
and/or
A DVD writer suitable for growisofs. It has to be reachable via a SCSI device file. On modern Linux systems, other connection types can be used via an emulated SCSI bus. On even more modern Linux (>= 2.5), growisofs can use IDE device files directly.
As an alternative, it is possible to use cdrecord-ProDVD.
If you got any other high capacity backup devices which you want to use rather than a CD recorder then please contact me. I am interested in learning how to use them for writing of backup data.
Software requirements :
/bin/sh
compatible to GNU Bourne-Again SHell (bash).
including usual programs like: cat, date, du, echo, ls, ...
see hints for working around shell compatibility problems
afio
archiver program (for system backups)
gzip
data compression program (for compressed afio and incremental backups)
bc
calculator language (only if you employ the locking protocol)
Required for writing DVD :
growisofs
from package "dvd+rw-tools"
or cdrecord-ProDVD (see README, Appendix DVD)
a binary with time limited license
Enhancements:
- scdbackup now supports wodim and cdrskin as CD/DVD burn backends, as well as the ISO9660 formatter genisoimage.
- The helper application scdbackup_askme is able to quickly find files in large incremental backups, to guide through extraction of single files, or to perform the full restore of a whole backup.

KungFu DVD Ripper 0.2.3
KungFu DVD Ripper is a GStreamer based DVD ripper. more>>
KungFu DVD Ripper is a GStreamer based DVD ripper.
KungFu creates backups of your DVDs, saving them as .oggs on your hard drive. It encodes the backup using patent-free codecs, Theora for video and Vorbis for audio.
KungFu is not designed for producing backups that fit within a certain file size (say, for burning onto CD); instead, it is designed to produce backups of consistent quality while maintaining the lowest average file size possible (for building a video library on your hard drive).
