Paderborn University BSP Library 01-26-2007

Paderborn University BSP Library 01-26-2007

Paderborn University BSP Library is a C-Library to support development of parallel algorithm. more>>
Paderborn University BSP Library is a C-Library to support development of parallel algorithm based on the "Bulk-Synchronous-Parallel-Model".
The Library offers buffered asynchronous message-passing between the nodes, organized in supersteps. At the begin of a superstep the nodes receive all messages which has been sent in the previous superstep.
The PUB-Library supports in addition to send node-to-node messages other functions like broadcasts and parallel prefix operations with a set of nodes.
PUB offers functions for both message passing and remote memory access. Furthermore, some collective communication operations like broadcast and parallel prefix are also provided.
To become more flexible, PUB allows creating independent BSP objects each representing a virtual BSP computer. Goudreau et al.[GHL$^+$96] defined an interface for BSP libraries call ``BSP Worldwide Standard which is implemented in the Oxford BSP toolset[HDM97]. You can also use the BSP Worldwide Standard for programming with PUB (refer to Section 1.6).
A performance comparison with other communication libraries and some implementation details can be found in [BJOR99].
The PUB-Library is available for several parallel platforms. The generated library is specified by four configuration variables PUB_MACHINE (machine type), PUB_SYSTEM (operating system), PUB_COMMUNICATION (communication library) and PUB_MODE (e.g. debug).
Enhancements:
- This release adds numerous minor bugfixes.

IIPImage 0.9.7 (Server)

IIPImage 0.9.7 (Server)

IIPImage is an Open Source light-weight client-server system for the remote viewing of very high-resolution images. more>>
IIPImage is an Open Source light-weight client-server system for the remote viewing of very high-resolution images. The project is designed to be bandwidth and memory efficient and usable even over a slow internet connection. The system is fast because the client only needs to download the portion of the whole image that is visible on the screen of the user at their current viewing resolution.
The client requests a view of an image and the server only needs to send back the image tiles necessary for that particular view. This makes it possible to view, navigate and zoom around very large images that would be impossible to download and manipulate on the local machine. It also makes the system very scalable as the image tile downloads will take the same regardless of the size of the source image. In addition, to reduce the bandwidth necessary even further, the tiles sent back are dynamically JPEG compressed with a level of compression that can be optimized for the available bandwidth by the client. In this way it is possible to view extremely large gigapixel images in real-time over the internet.
In order for the system to be as efficient as possible, the images are stored in the multi-resolution TIFF tiled pyramidal format. This allows the server to extract regions of the full image at different resolutions very quickly with little processing overhead. Image of several gigapixels in size can be stored on a central server and viewed by many different users without the need to download large amounts of data.
The system was originally devised by the National Gallery in London and the University of Southampton for the Viseum (1996) and Acohir (1999) EU projects.
The aim of these projects was to create a system for viewing very high resolution colorimetric museum images over the internet. In the case of Acohir, to extend the system to handle 3D object sequences. A published paper describing this work is available online. The current versions of the software, though, have been completely rewritten since then. This kind of system, though, is also applicable to other areas such as geographical informations systems or medical imaging.
Main features:
- Fast lightweight Fast CGI server module that can be embedded in most web servers (Apache, Lighttpd, MyServer etc)
- Several clients available - java applet, javascript etc
- Instant dynamic generation of JPEG overviews or details at any resolution
- Allows easy viewing of extremely large images (gigapixel size) with no significant memory requirements
- Standard TIFF-based image format that can be read by many image processing tools (Photoshop, GIMP, VIPS etc)
- 16 bits per channel image handling
- Greyscale, sRGB and CIE L*a*b* colour spaces
- Panoramic 3D object image sequences
- Secure image distribution: only JPEG-compressed views of the image are sent to the client. The full-resolution image does not need to be accessible
- Example uses: high resolution museum images, geographical information systems, medical imaging etc.
Enhancements:
- The major new feature is a hillshading function for image relief maps.
- In addition, major stability and performance enhancements have been made to the tile cache.
- There has also been a major code cleanup and refactoring to make the core fully modular.

Boston University Linux 4.5 Server Edition (Zodiac)

Boston University Linux 4.5 Server Edition (Zodiac)

Boston University Linux is based on Fedora Core Linux, but specifically tailored for the BU environment. more>>
Boston University Linux is based on Fedora Core Linux, but specifically tailored for the BU environment.

Weve added security updates, made modifications to make software work better with the way things are set up here, and added some applications that we think you might like to have.

The server edition of BU Linux provides a modern, stable, and robust server platform suitable for long-term deployment in many roles throughout the university.

Supported Hardware

Currently, only i686-class machines are supported. This includes almost everything from Intels Pentium Pro on. AMD64 and Intel EM64T systems will work fine using their 32-bit mode. Watch for a 64-bit version later this summer.

Specific Notes on Server Applications

Mail Server:

BU Linux 4.5 Server Edition (Zodiac) includes three different choices of Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) for your mail server. Each of these open source servers has its unique strengths, and you can install one or more and use the utility system-switch-mail to choose which is active.

The default is IBMs Postfix, which is designed from scratch to be secure and easily configurable. On a newly-installed BU Linux machine, Postfix is configured to exchange mail on the local machine and to send mail out to other systems, but not receive mail from the network. For this reason, outgoing mail from global BU accounts (those matching valid BU login names and with the proper UID) will appear to come from @bu.edu rather than @hostname.bu.edu. Local users (including system accounts) will retain the hostname, but without reconfiguration, any replies will bounce. Changing the system to accept mail is easy; see the BU Linux web site for details.

For the maximum flexibility and for compatibility with existing configurations (and with existing expertise), we also include the traditional standard Sendmail. And, if you have particular special needs, you may find that the new Exim MTA fits your situation best.

No matter which MTA you choose, please contact us if you need any assistance. With so many options available, the situation can be confusing, and its unfortunately easy for an accidentally misconfigured system to become a target for spam relayers. We have significant expertise at configuring both Postfix and Sendmail in a variety of situations, and will be glad to help.

FTP Server:

This release of BU Linux provides two options for FTP. The first is vsftpd, which is designed to be simple and secure. This is the most appropriate for almost all situations, but if you require more power and flexibility, we also include ProFTPd, which has many more options and a configuration syntax similar to that of the Apache web server.

Please also remember that FTP is an insecure protocol and that any passwords used travel over the network in plain text. For this reason, its best to avoid anything but anonymous FTP. For user-authenticated file transfer, use SSH and SFTP. (SFTP is provided by the OpenSSH server and enabled by default.)

Web Server:

The web server software included in BU Linux is the industry-standard Apache httpd. We also include PHP 4.3 and many other useful tools for building a web server.
If you need to provide authenticated access to web services to BU users, please contact us and we will provide you with our University-standard Weblogin module. This provides a powerful and flexible means of single-signon access control for the BU user community and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to provide this for your users.

Database Server:

BU Linux includes MySQL 4.1 and PostgreSQL 7.4. For less demanding SQL applications, we also provide SQLite 3, which provides simple SQL databases without the management overhead of running a SQL server.

Legal Case Management System 0.7.2b

Legal Case Management System 0.7.2b

Legal Case Management System is a software aimed for use by not-for-profit legal advice centres. more>>
Legal Case Management System is a software aimed for use by not-for-profit legal advice centres in order to make better follow-ups of their cases, including client consultations and court events.
Integration into your offices activities
The software can be installed either on one computer or shared over a network. You can then provide a personal access to each member of your organisation. This allows them to chose how they want to work on a case and how the case information should be shared with the other members.
Users can then create new cases (or campaigns) to which they can attach a list of people or organisations involved as well as to add follow-up information.
- Organisations providing advice or consultations will benefit from being able to quickly consult the database for background information on a clients case and evolution, contact information, etc.
- Lawyers can use the software to track the evolution of a case and the resources spent on a particular client, as well as to track the status of a case in court.
- Office managers can generate reports based on the activity for a given period. The variety of reports include: activity overview for each staff members, statistical information on cases or clients, and general overview on how the usage of the organisations resources. Such reports facilitate the reporting on projects and the creation of new budgets.
Software freedom
LCM is a Bulgarian community initiative developed by IRBF, funded by the Open Society Institute and distributed as "free software". The software is being developed for local not-for-profit advice centers, but anyone has the freedom to use it, to redistribute it locally and to adapt it to their own needs.
The software is currently available in English and Bulgarian, but more translations are welcomed and very easy to do with the help of an online translation interface.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes the "sum billed" format error (if the field is active), as well as the "case notes" being lost after edit.

Carnegie Mellon NetReg/NetMon 1.1.9

Carnegie Mellon NetReg/NetMon 1.1.9

Carnegie Mellon NetReg/NetMon is a network management system. more>>
The Network Development group maintains two web-accessible database systems: the Network Registration system (NetReg) and the Network Monitoring (NetMon) system. These systems were designed from the ground up at Carnegie Mellon.
NetReg
NetReg provides administrators a central platform for administration of network information. NetReg keeps a database of subnet information, DNS zones, DHCP options, machine registrations, and more. It has a finely grained access control mechanism to provide administrators maximum flexibility in delegating access.
NetMon
NetMon, the "sister" of NetReg, collects and processes information from the network. It captures CAM table and ARP table information from network devices, as well as store DHCP lease information (updated every minute by the DHCP servers). The goal of NetMon is to provide a real-time as well as historical view of the network. Using NetMon we are able to detect misregistered and unregistered machines.
Basic System Components
NetReg and NetMon are both written in Perl. They use the DBI modules for interfacing with MySQL databases (but they could be ported to other DBMSs fairly easily given the DBI usage.) We use the Apache web server and run mod_perl on the NetReg server. We generate DNS zonefiles and configurations for the ISC Bind 8/9 servers, and the ISC DHCP server.
Enhancements:
- A User realm popup was added for searching and adding users.
- Numeric zone names are allowed for RBL zones.
- Subnet map improvements were made.
- The interface of the zone to subnet mapping was improved.
- A generic query interface for changelogs was added, but is currently only available for machines.
- Several edge cases where zone serials on static zones werent being updated were fixed.
- Several bugs with DNS resource parenting were fixed.
- A race condition in dns.pl was fixed.
- A bug with moving dynamic registrations to a new subnet was fixed.

WESTBANG

WESTBANG

WESTBANG is a western FPS style game for Linux. more>>
WESTBANG is a western FPS style game for Linux.

Comics

Files: DATA/COMIX/*.CMX

Comics are simple animations with given images made by a script file.
Comics are used for intro and outro animation and for interlevel shots.
There are these reserved comics:

intro.cmx played after the start of the program
gameover.cmx played, when a player loose his last life
goodbye.cmx played after the quit

You can modify these files as you wish, but you have to keep these names,
because they are called directly from the program. Other comics, their
names or number, is random.

Any of the *.cmx file can contain these commands:

delay < ticks >

Specifies the time the computer will wait before he does the next
command.

image < index > < name >

Image loads the specified bitmap and gives it an index number. In the
< name > can be just the name of the bitmap (the *.bmp file) or the path
and the name. The path starts in ../WESTBANG/DATA/COMIX, so all your
bitmaps and dirs have to be in the COMIX directory.

Note: The color 255,0,255 is transparent.

destroy < index >

Removes the image from the memory. Dont forget to destroy images,
or you can glut the memory.

virtual < v_index > < index > < pos_X > < pos_Y > < width > < height >

Virtual is the quad shaped object taken out of the image you can work
with by the commands of the comics. You can define more than one virtual
in one image.
< v_index > is the index given to the new virtual.
< index > is the index of the source bitmap.
< pox_X > < pos_Y > are the coords of the upper left corner of the virtual
in the image.
< width > < height > set the size of the virtual.

anime < v_inde x> < frames > < delay >

Makes the specified virtual the animated one. < Frames > is the number of
the frames and < delay > sets the pause between the two frames (speed of
animation).
Animated virtuals are made of bitmaps with all the frames placed in the
row. So the height of the bitmap is the same as the frames height and
width equals to times width of the frame.

anime_type < v_index > < type >

Sets the type of the animation of the specified virtual.
1: from first to last (1->2->3->...)
2: zig zag (1->2->3->2->1->...)
3: random

Example: These three commands make a short animated virtual.
virtual 3 1 0 0 10 10 //defines the first frame (size 10x10)
//taken from the image 1 (size 40x10)
anime 3 4 18 //makes 4-frames animation
anime_type 3 1 //sets the type of the animation to normal

setxy < v_index > < x > < y >

Puts the specified virtual on the given coords.

vis_on < v_index >

Shows the specified virtual. New created virtuals are hiden. You have to
use vis_on, if you want to see them on the screen.

vis_off < v_index >

Hides the specified virtual.

move < v_index > < tx > < ty > < sx > < sy > < tempo >

Sets the virtual as "the moving" one. Moving virtual goes automaticaly
from actual coords to target coords < tx >,< ty >. The speed of the motion
can be controled by the length of the single step (< sx >: step along the
x-axis, < sy >: step along the y-axis in pixels), or by the < tempo > - the
delay between the two steps.

resize < v_index> < sw> < sh> < speed_x> < speed_y>

Sets the virtual as "the resizing" one. < Sw> and < sh> are starting
height and witdth. Resizing can go by the very small steps, thats why
you have to set sw=100000 and sh=100000 if you want the starting size
of the virtual to be 100% x 100%.

sound < index> < name>

This is the same as the image command for the bitmaps.

play_sound < index> < volume> < panning>

Plays the sound once.

repeat_sound < index> < volume> < panning>

Repeats the sound, until you stop it by the command:

stop_sound < index>

destroy_sound < index>

Removes the sound from the memory.

pause

Waits for input. The script wont continue, until the user presses any key.

include < file_name>

Plays the < file_name> comics file. You can make the hierarchy in the files by this command. Its usefull for the good control of the long comics to create one "main" cmx file, that calls the single scenes as you can see in the "intro.cmx".

If you want to learn more, how to create the script look in our *.cmx files. Note: Max number of images is 50. Max number of virtuals is 50. Max number of samples is 20.
