eSpeak 1.28

eSpeak 1.28

eSpeak is a software speech synthesizer for English, and potentially other languages. more>>
eSpeak is a software speech synthesizer for English, and potentially other languages.
eSpeak produces good quality English speech. It uses a different synthesis method from other open source TTS engines, and sounds quite different. Its perhaps not as natural or "smooth", but I find the articulation clearer and easier to listen to for long periods.
eSpeak project can run as a command line program to speak text from a file or from stdin. It works well as a "Talker" with the KDE text to speech system (KTTS), as an alternative to Festival for example. As such, it can speak text which has been selected into the clipboard, or directly from the Konquerer browser or the Kate editor.
- Includes different Voices, whose characteristics can be altered.
- Can produce speech output as a WAV file.
- Can translate text to phoneme codes, so it could be adapted as a front end for another speech synthesis engine.
- Potential for other languages. Rudimentary (and probably humourous) attempts at German and Esperanto are included.
- Compact size. The program and its data total about 350 kbytes.
- Written in C++.
I regularly use it to listen to blogs and news sites. I prefer the sound through a domestic stereo system rather than my small computer speakers.
INSTALLATION:
- Place the "speak" executable file in the command path, eg in /usr/local/bin
- Place the "speak-data" directory in /usr/share as /usr/share/speak-data.
Alternatively if it is placed in the users home directory (i.e. /home/ /speak-data) then that will be used instead.
- Dependencies.
speak uses the PortAudio sound library, so you will need to have the libportaudio0 library package installed. It may be already, since its used by other software, such as OpenOffice.org and the Audacity sound editor.
COMMAND OPTIONS:
Examples
To use at the command line, type:
speak -f < text file >
Or just type
speak
followed by text on subsequent lines. Each line is spoken when RETURN is pressed. Use speak -p to see the corresponding phonemes codes.
echo "This is a test" | speak
Speaking from a single line command.
Enhancements:
- Roman number translation added for some languages.
- Improvements to languages, including en-r, Hungarian, Romanian.
- Various bug fixes.

Car World 0.243

CarWorld is a small driving simulator/demo I use to test various things of interest. It was mostly developed when I was a student. Car World is released with the full source code under the GNU General Public License.

The rendering

The two top pictures represent an slightly older version (v0.072) but graphically similar of CarWorld as it was presented for my project. v0.072 includes an OpenGL based renderer allowing
file input and displaying of texture mapped models with interpolated surface normals, real time projected shadows (as seen in the dino lights example).
background object
on screen command line to modify visual and simulation parameters

The mechanics

based on classical mechanics
uses standard metrics (Newtons, meters, seconds...)
there are no constraints on the environment surface
variable length time increments and variable increment number means "CarWorld time" is not dependent on frame rate.
adjustable simulation specs include: metrics, mass, moment of inertia around rotation axis, suspension pre load, compression damping, rebound damping, engine torque output, air friction, surface friction.

KCorrMeter 1.1.0

KCorrMeter 1.1.0

KCorrMeter is a correlation meter. more>>
KCorrMeter is a correlation meter. KCorrMeter is used to display the quality of an audio stereo signal.
Sound engineers will definitely have seen such a tool in the studio and know how to use it.
You can use it to adjust the head of your tape machine. If it isnt mounted in the right angle this will show up.
If you ever wanted to find out if an audio signal is a stereo or mono signal. This is the tool for you.
Non - sound engineers might use it as well and like the visualisation effects.
Enhancements:
- ported to ALSA
- fixed quite a few bugs

Racer 0.5.2 beta8.9

Racer 0.5.2 beta8.9

Racer is a free car simulation project, using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. more>>
Racer is a free car simulation project, using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations).
The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL for rendering.
It attempts to do well at the physics section, trying to create life-like cars to emphasize car control and doesnt cut back on realism in the interest of fun. If youve played Grand Prix Legends from Papyrus, youll know what Im talking about.
Racer major features:
- Its totally free! (for non-commercial use)
- Available for multiple platforms; Windows 2000/XP (95/98/ME may work but have some trouble with fonts), Linux and Mac OS X.
- 6 DOF models used (the car can move around freely)
- Uses motion formulae from actual engineering documents from SAE for example.
- Total flexibility; almost everything is customizable through ASCII files.
- Commercial-quality rendering engine (with smoke, skidmarks, sparks, sun, flares, vertex-color lit tracks).
- Support for Matrox Surround Gaming. See the corresponding page on Matrox site.
- Lots of addon cars and tracks available on the web.
- Easy integration of your own cars and tracks that you create in ZModeler, 3D Studio Max(tm), Maya etc.
- At least 15 degrees of freedom for a regular car (6 DOF for the car body, 1 for each wheels vertical motion and 1 for each wheel spinning, and 1 for the engine, several more for the driveline). Depending actually on how many wheels you put on the car.
- Real-time internal clock; no physical dependency on framerate. Controller updates are also done independently of the framerate.
- Not limited to 4 wheels; anything from 2 to 8 wheel vehicles are currently supported (but mostly untested, and some problems with hardcoded differentials for example may exist (v0.5.0)).
- Not much constraints on the track data; surface info is taken from polygon data (VRML tracks), and splines are used to smooth out the track surface (polygons are too harsh for driving on just like that).
- Tools to modify the cars & tracks are freely available on this site (though external utilities are recommended for best results).
- Some used algorithms are explained on this site. Also, references are available. If you are programming a carsim, you might find something useful here.
- Save game present!
Main features:
PHYSICS FEATURES
- Full 6 degree of freedom motion of the car chassis.
- Independent suspension for all wheels.
- Suspension features: springs, dampers, anti-rollbar, rollcenter, anti-pitch.
- Wheel features: camber, wheel hop (the wheels have mass), toe.
- Tires: Pacejka tire model, relaxation length.
GRAPHICS FEATURES
- View frustum culling for increased framerate.
- Shader system for Quake-style rendering.
- Fog definable per track.
- Environment mapping for shiny materials.
- Live track environment mapping.
