Band Saw is a syslog monitoring program for the GNOME desktop. Band Saw project allows the user to setup filters that define which messages should generate alerts.

Combined with syslogs remote logging functionality it provides a scalable and easily deployed monitoring solution.

How does it work?

Band Saw is really quite simple; it monitors messages that are fed to it from a suitably configured syslog server, looking out for messages that contain text that the administrator is interested in. Any log message that matches the administrators filters will be brought to the users attention via a dialog box that pops up on screen.

Because syslog itself supports propagating messages between seperate computers, with syslog and Band Saw you can easily monitor a large number of computers for critical errors.

Netclasses is an asynchronous networking library that works with GNUstep and Mac OS X. Out of the box, netclasses gives a nice, asynchronous, and object-oriented interface for IRC, line- based, and raw TCP/IP connections.
Users can easily subclass the raw TCP/IP or line-based interfaces to create asynchronous interfaces for other sorts of connections.

netstiff (formerly known as webdiff) is a powerful Web page update checker. The project supports a variety of different methods (diff, html, size, date, regexp, MD5 sum) and only prints the URIs of the Web pages that changed so that its output can easily be used by other scripts (such as wget or mail).
Enhancements:
- As a release focus, (beta) FTP support has been added with test methods "diff", "size", and "date".
- Furthermore, stderr is used for errors and warnings in addition to the log file.
- To suppress this behaviour, the -S option has been introduced.

It includes the program "emcast", a generic multicast utility (like netcat), and the library "libemcast", a generic multicast library.
Emcast supports IPv4 multicast (IM) and can easily support almost any end-host multicast (EM) protocol.
The EM protocols supported are Banana Tree Protocol (BTP) and Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

- Copy from inet address, not string. Interesting that mcast was still working before in Linux.
