Performous 0.3.1
A free Linux karaoke game more>>
Performous 0.3.1 is created to be a karaoke program that can both display the lyrics, notes but also display how well you actually hit the notes. Unlike in many other games in this genre, you will also see the pitch that you are singing, so that you can see what you are doing wrong and easily (well, everything is relative) correct your pitch.
Most of the songs available also contain the original vocals and actual karaoke versions are rare. How it works? The game records your voice via a microphone, attached to your computer. The audio is recorded and realtime FFT analysis is done on it. This analysis reveals which frequency bands contain audio (peaks).
Further analysis is used to find out the exact audio frequencies inside each band, and to combine base frequencies and their harmonics into single tones. Finally, some temporal (over time) filtering is applied to the detected tones to smooth out the output. It doesn't matter if you didn't take university courses on acoustics and mathematics, and none of that makes any sense: you will get a wave on screen, displaying your singing pitch.
Scoring and note types
- Regular notes: displayed in light blue (1x points)
- Golden notes: displayed in gold (2x points)
- Freestyle notes: displayed in green, pitch does not matter (1x points)
The singing octave does not matter, so as long as you get the right note in any octave, you will get full points. Singing near the correct note also gives some points, but the amount of points per second decreases as you get farther from the right tone. Singing within the right semitone always gives full points, so you may actually be off by a quarter tone and still get the points.
The maximum number of points is always 10000, but it is practically unreachable in real songs, usual scores being in the range of 2000-9000, depending mostly on the skills of the singer, but also on the song: even though the maximum is the same, slower songs are generally easier to sing.
Oh, and in case you were wondering: you will not get full points by placing the microphone near a speaker, because it will also pick up other instruments, which usually have incorrect pitch. Expect to get about 3000 points with this method.
Major Features :
- Should work on almost any platform
- Primary platform is Linux (where the development is done)
- OS X is known to work well
- Windows should be possible by just compiling the program from source (please let us know if you try)
- Playstation 3 works but is unplayable (needs OpenGL acceleration)
- Very accurate singing pitch detection
- Noisy environments are not an issue
- Multiple simultaneous tones can be detected and separated properly
- OpenGL-based graphics rendering
- Music videos as backgrounds
- Based on ffmpeg (supports almost all formats)
Enhancements:
- Multiplayer with Singstar mics or any other stereo input
- Dramatically improved performance, runs fine on very slow machines now
- Fully OpenGL-based (some kind of 3D acceleration is now mandatory, but even Intel works fine)
- Heavily pimped graphics in singing screen
- Automatically zooming notelines in singing screen
- Real widescreen support (adaptive layout instead of stretching or cropping)
- Song folders are now scanned recursively, in the background without blocking the UI
- Ingame and preview volume may be controlled
- Audio roundtrip latency and audio/video sync controls added
- New score window (still no highscores)
- New menu theme song
- Separate game engine thread, so that slow graphics rendering should no longer affect pitch detection
- Our own audio library libda, supporting ALSA, Pulseaudio, JACK and others
- FFMPEG-based video and audio decoding (together with libda replaces Xine and GStreamer)
- CMake-based build (Autotools are gone for good)
Requirements:
- Graphics chip with OpenGL acceleration (e.g. GF2 MX400)
- Pentium III 700 MHz or comparable CPU
- A microphone

The Vector development team is proud to announce SOHO 5.1.2-live. We started with SOHO 5.1 added all the recent bugfix patches, and rolled it into a livecd. This is what I believe to be the most feature packed livecd available. It comes with two complete desktops kde-3.4.2, and xfce4.
Built upon the great heritage that is slackware. this release features the 2.6.15.1 kernel, OpenOffice 2.0, Firefox-1.5, Scribus, the Gimp, Mplayer, multimedia pluggins, printer support, scanner support and everything a complete desktop/work station should have.
Plus all of Vectors own administration utilities, and just look at this list of wireless modules
If youve ever wanted to try Vector, or just wanted to show your friends, without having to partition hard drives then here is your chance.
Enhancements:
- The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.8 Live CD and the first SOHO 5.8 alpha live CD and DVD. This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live. The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD editions. The DVD edition includes all that is in the SOHO 5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE. The CD version has lost some functionality due to size constraints. The development tool chain and OpenOffice.org were removed.
Graphical certification authority 0.6.4
Graphical certification authority project is a graphical user interface to OpenSSL, RSA/DSA public keys, certificates, etc. more>>
The keys have an internal counter, counting its use to avoid a duplicate use of a key for creating a certificate or request.
The Keys are of course encrypted in the db file.
Xca supports next to the usual PEM and DER format of certificates the import and export of PKCS#12 (aka *.pfx) files and the Certificate import from PKCS#7 files.
Certificates can be created by self signing it, by signing it by an other (usually CA) certificate or by signing a PKCS#10 request. Netscape SPKAC is supported since version 0.4.6. The validity dates and x509.v3 extensions can be adjusted to fit ones needs. The use of multiple certificates in CA chains is supported and a tree view of the certificates reflects the dependencies. The application takes care to not create duplicate certificates by checking the serial number(s) on import and creation of certificates.
Certificate Templates can be used to preset the input dialog with reasonable values and to simplify the process of creating certificates and requests.
Issued certificates can be revoked and the revokation list can be created and exported. External revokation lists can be imported and examined.
Enhancements:
- This version fixes an issue where some CA signed certificates were not sorted correctly below that CA.
- Malformed certificates no longer cause a crash.
- The string encoding rules for the distinguished name can now be set in the options dialog and PKCS#10 attributes can be set and inspected.

WorldForge::Mason 0.3
Mason is a game system being developed by WorldForge. more>>
Complicated structures such as houses can be designed on paper as a blueprint and then built with suitable building blocks and skills.
Reaching this milestone will require expanding not only our existing server and client code, but also refining the Atlas protocal that connects them.
The expansion will cover item creation (using a recipe system), construction of houses and other large structures (attaching items together), creating complex machines (combining simple machine parts), simulating organic reactions (festering wounds, adrenaline rush) with a detailed body system, editing text and other information objects in-game, and running an economy that changes with the world.
To demonstrate these techniques we will create a competitive and cooperative game centering about settling the uninhabited lands in the north-western corner of Moraf in our Dural world.
The players can play either human settlers attracted by the rumors of gold or promises of free land, or orcs, driven down to the plains from the overpopulated dens of the orc tribes of Sarnak.
Game
This section contains things related to the Mason Game in general, such as background story, game objectives, and planned features for version 1.0 of the game. It will also contain an installation guide, a players guide, and a game administrators guide. Theres also a page of links to screenshots and downloads.
If you are a potential future player and would like to know what the game will be like, or a creative writer interested in making the game interesting and fun to play, or if you want to write or translate documentation for end users, then this is the place for you.
Technology
This section contains the design of the various abstract systems that will implement all the central features of Mason. The systems include: the Item System, the Mechanical System, the Information Object System, the Body System, the Mind System, and others.
If you are a developer or game designer, interested in how all the revolutionary features supported by Mason are going to be implemented, then this section is for you.
Content
This section deals with all the general data needed for the Mason Game: item and creature descriptions and stats, maps of the Moraf area in the Dural world, and media for items and terrain. This data can be directly reused in later games.
If you are a world designer, artist, musician, or a MU* wizard who loves creating cool new items, then this section is for you.
Enhancements:
- Mason is now supported in two major 3D clients, Ember and Sear.
- An advanced terrain system has been implemented, including procedural texturing, paths, modified areas, and swimming in water.
- Building materials and resources can be gathered from the world using tools.
- Work has started on a new combat system.

Starbucks Density Calculator, by Nat Torkington
Heres a pair of scripts from Nat Torkington, editor for OReilly Media and co-author of the Perl Cookbook.
Rael [Dornfest] discovered that you can easily find out how many Starbucks there are in an area by searching for "Starbucks". So I wrote a silly scraper for some old census data and came up with some Starbucks density figures. Theres no meaning to these numbers thanks to errors from using old census data coupled with false positives in Yahoo search (e.g., "Dodie Starbuck-Your Style Desgn" in Portland OR). But it was fun to waste a night on.
Here are the top twenty cities in descending order of population, with the amount of territory each Starbucks has. E.g., A New York NY Starbucks covers 1.7 square miles of ground.
